Lyrics
William Zanzinger killed Hattie Carroll
With a cane that he twirled on his diamond ring finger
At a Baltimore hotel society gathering
The police were called in and his weapon took from him
They drove him into custody down at the station
Charged William Zanzinger with First Degree Murder
And you who philosophise disgrace and criticise my fears
Take that rag away from your face now's not the time for your tears
When William Zanzinger was 24
He was farming tobacco on 600 acres
With rich wealthy parents to provide and protect him
High office relations in the politics of Maryland
Reacted to his deed with a shrug of his shoulders
With sneering and swear words his tongue it was snarling
In less than 10 minutes on bail was out walking
And you who philosophise disgrace and criticise my fears,
Take that rag away from your face now's not the time for your tears.
Hattie Carroll was a maid who worked in the kitchen
51 years old she had 10 children
She carried the dishes and took out the garbage
She never once sat at the head of the table
She never even spoke to the people at the table
Just cleared all the food from the table
And emptied ashtrays on a whole other level
Killed by a blow and lay slain by a cane
That sailed through the air and came down through the room
Doomed and determined to destroy all that's gentle
She never did nothing to William Zanzinger
And you who philosophise disgrace and criticise my fears
Take that rag away from your face now's not the time for your tears
At the courtroom of honour the Judge pounded his gavel
To show all is equal and his court is on the level
That the strings and the books are not pulled or persuaded
Even the rich get properly treated
Once the cops have chased them and caught them
The ladder of the law has no top and no bottom
He stared at that man who had killed for no reason
Who just happened to be feeling that way without warning
He spoke through his cloak most deep and distinguished
And handed down strongly form penalty and repentance
Gave William Zanzinger a 6 month sentence
And you who philosophise disgrace and criticise my fears
Bury that rag most deep in your face now is the time for your tears.

This is the best cover of ANY Dylan song. Saw Bob do it live on 2/24/63 on Steve Allen’s night show. It changed my life No more watching for me, doing began. The March on Washington was 6 months later. Bless Martin & Dylan
One of the best Robert Zimmerman covers ever
This period of Christy Moore's performing career, when he was touring with just Declan Sinnott for backing, was arguably the best. I saw them at the Barrowlands in 2012 and they were brilliant. This is an excellent version of this song.
Nowhere quite like the Barrowlands. Christy said it himself, his shows there are special. Seen him there twice in the early 2000's. Amazing nights. Wid love to see him the the concert hall but never got round to that
Back then this was an incredibly brave song to write and record. Dylan was fearless.
Fabulous cover of Dylan’s masterpiece. ❤
Legends of Irish folk music 👌
Gorgeous singing and so amazing song ever thank you Christy and Declan topssssssss
What a good performer! He sings so well and snares with his bardic story in song.
A great version!!!
Great music, great entertainer for sure
Christy living the song, brilliant stuff altogether...
Christy is The GOAT of our music.
The part I love best of this song is the last chorus. An absolute masterpiece.
Best cover of this song! Loved jt
Heart breaking and brilliant, love this cover x
One of my favorite dylan song's
Its a rare moment when a cover beats the original and when the original was recorded by Dylan then you know it's something special.
Brilliant
Loved this!! Harmonies were perfect and this iteration absolutely captured the spirit of the original.
Old recording, but still a nice version of that song. :)
Le deceo éxitocs y bendiciones muy hermosa canción🙏🙏🏻💯
One of the best Robert Zimmerman coverd ever.

One of the best Robert Zimmerman covers ever.
Christy & Declan at their best 💚💚 xx
Christy sings early Dylan
Why doesnt he cram in even more superfluous words and akward phrasings, while strumming even harder with a 1.5mm pick and being even sweatier.
