Garth Hudson doesn't get much credit and is the least known member of The Band but he is the one behind most of the music composition. Amazing musician!!
If you read Robbie's book you will find Robbie had great respect for Garth and thought the world of his talent. Garth was introverted, in a band with some strong personalites, Levon, Robbie and a couple of very good looking guys with a lot of charisma, Rick and Robbie.
wow, Ronnie's slide sounds awesome. What a great way to entertain the crown and give The Band a breather before their encore. And that signature Niel Young stomp is a classic. Wish I'd seen him in concert. (I may have in Jacksonville AL in the 1970s with the Stills Young Band, but I don't have a visual memory of that show)
At 8:15 Robbie and his killer smile, just makes me melt. I read his book he was nervous and exhausted even before the concert started, but he pulled it off, and could still smile that late at night.
Happily helping and letting Stills guest on his guitar too. Id be just as ecstatic/nervous handing any instrument to Stills, who can pretty much play anything.
It's actually some of the best stuff I've heard, both of them on the drums, Radle, Ronnie Woods slippery sliding with Butterfield holding fort, Neil jumpin about and then when Stills comes on he just takes charge with some of my favourite playing.. 👌
I watch this segment (and the rest of the concert) every year at Thanksgiving (I was a lucky attendee), but I don't know who is the keyboard player in the white shirt (to the left of Dr. John, in back) playing at the tail end of the Jam #2. Can anyone help fill in what might be the last unknown detail of this show for me? P.S. I already have the Dave Alexander/Omar Sharriff opening boogie-woogie upright piano on the main floor stage right/floor left identified --- when I was at the show, I was somewhat confused that maybe this turned out to be Pinetop Perkins from Muddy Waters' contingent. I was wrong of course, but I was just 20 and not at all steeped in the local blues scene.
Holy shit! Of course this didn't make the movie b/c Scorsese was charged with emphasizing RR. Look at Neil Young crushing it. Go boys. DMM PS: Ronnie Wood always said how tilted the movie was against the other Band members. This jam shows that.
It wasn't only Ronnie Wood. All the other members of The Band felt the same way and talked about in books and interviews especially Helm. Did you notice in the beginning Robertson acting like grandmaster of the event. A really talented guy but an egotistical schmuck (he is part Jewish)
Your last comment is anti semitic. Robbie was the one who set it up, it was his idea. Richard Manuel was not in good shape, Levon didn't like to be photograped. Give Robbie a break he was a genius.@@harlanginsberg7269
@@harlanginsberg7269 What does Jewish have to do with anything? First of all The Last Waltz was Robbie's brainchild, he worked harder on it than anyone else. He's the one that got Scorsese to direct it. Besides that, Levon did like to be photographed, Richard felt the same way, he was not in good shape, Garth was an introvert, Rick is featured almost as much as Robbie, looking cool and sexy in a leather jacket playing pool, and showing Scorsese around the Shrangi Li. Levon is featured talking a Scorsese, and he certainly is seen in a lot of clips playing drums and singing. Robbie and Rick were the 2 photogenetic ones, and probably the most outgoing and charming, which is probably why they are seen more than the others, it is a movie after all, you need people with star power.
I wondered the same thing. He (or she?) is wearing a light colored shirt, sitting just behind Dr. John, who's taken residence on Garth's organ. Garth is on the grand piano, but it can't be Richard. The person's hair is totally wrong to be Richard. As somebody else said, most he and Ricky were enjoying themselves backstage w/ the likes of Van and Clapton. Wonder what folks like Ringo, Ronnie Wood, Stills or Neil remember of that part of the night. Sadly most are gone; you'd have to guess folks like Muddy, Pinetop and Bob Margolin might not have hung around. Or maybe the "bigtime" Hawk still has stories from then. Thanks for putting this together.
@@JohnHaslam-nh8tn In the beginning you can very clearly see Manuel standing next to Dr John beginning to play piano. If he was partying with Danko he was late to the party.
Mr Garth Hudson on the organ .....peerless !
The Master himself.

I disagree. The guys credited him with a vast array of showpiece work.

Stephen Stills doing what he knows best, playing the blues better than just about anybody else.
I love this outtake jus because of the great Carle radle having fun on bass being part of this historic moment.
Thank you this is a quite a find. Grateful for you sharing.
GARTH HUDSON THE BEST MULTIORGANIST OF HISTORY ¡¡¡¡¡
close to almost 50 years, and we have some new footage,,,,,AMAZING,,,!
I remember this being in the bonus features from the DVD I grew up watching. So this is not "new". New to UA-cam, maybe.
There was SO MUCH talent on that stage, the cameras almost had a meltdown @10:12
So many of my favorite musicians on stage at one time playing, BLISS☮️💜🙃💋
Simply incredible.
Love my idol, Ringo Starr, working the groove, nice and laid-back

Thank you for the work and posting this for all to enjoy!
25 layers of music. try to think about what each person is playing, it's pretty crazy how deep this jam is.
I love OUTTAKES from movies clips that didn't Make the final cut of film especially from the LAST WALTZ the greatest concert movie EVER.
Incredible. Incomparable.
This is so fantastic! Thank you for sharing & putting this together so well & for your description notes! 🙌
Amazing
I like the way Butterfield holds it all together
Thanks for sharing this... Just great...
Thanks for posting a big missing piece of my all-time favorite album, the one I would take on a deserted island.
THAT! That, is something!!!

I don't hear Butter that well, gonna have to re-listen
Levon- if you knew what was around the corner you'd put that cigarette down. I still love ya.
Some good Carl Radle footage.
What a underrated awesome bassist he was.
Ringing keeps it all together
Stills is incredible from 8:15 on
Big time!!!
neil young is coked out of his mind
Yes. But nobody else, right?
I’m sure backstage everyone else read bible scripture, drank milk and had consensual relations with their wives.
exelente

Kind of surprised to see this because I thought they were out of film!
ringo interesting drummer.. i like him

got a feeling I know where Danko was during the jam
Backstage?
@@connorfreeman1990 oh yeah- and being the life of the party, so to speak
I can count on one hand the people onstage in this video who remembered it the next morning.
I thought the same thing about the R&R, Band connection, missing the jam...Rick and Richard.
Well they had been just playing for nearly 5 hours! 😂
Added for miro
ringo does
Who's playing Robbie's guitar
Stephen Stills
rare video of Carl Radle playing
Carle radle was the man too... very underrated.

The fact that Scorcese ran out of film 😢, is perhaps his greatest mistake as a director! 😂
Where did this footage come from?
@@George-fh9zm For the 40th anniversary reissue this video was added as extra footage, it is also in the Criterion Collection edition
is a left handed person playing a right handed drum set
Ringo always played a right handed kit. He grew up when being left handed was seen as evil so he was made to be right handed.
Ringo 4 sure, Levon too?
Ringo always did
🥱
levon helm wanted no part
Levon killed it, look at that mug at 7:15 ta ta ting ting ta ta ta ting ting
This is amazing!!
Levon was having fun.. smoking a joint or cigarette like it's nothing playing amazing drums
Too sad Neil young couldn’t let Garth go with it .
Why do I keep expecting Prince to walk out and bring the roof down?
Cuz you're too young to get older, deeper references...homework time to broaden your horizons.
Who is that in white playing the keyboard at around the 12min mark?
Richard Manual
