The Simon Marty has a beautiful natural sound . I found the Smallman to sound tinny and artificial devoid of warmth . It sounds digital . The Marty analogue .
Great video. I am lucky enough to own a 2007 Marty. And a few years back I was studying with a teacher in Melbourne who owned a Smallman. Both have their benefits. At first I was legitimately scared of the brightness and volume of the Marty but have since grown to love it. (The first time my 3yo son heard it he ran out of the room crying... I felt bad but somehow gratified with the effect) It rewards accuracy but punishes mistakes ruthlessly. The Smallman however was much warmer and the bass strings seemed impossibly powerful. Ideally I dream of one day owning both. The Marty for punchy showy pieces and the Smallman for the more sorrowful compositions.
Very interesting, thank you for sharing. Would love to hear more comparisons, like Humphrey Millennium and Kenny Hill double-tops etc. They are both beautiful but I imagine sul tasto playing on the Smallman is more rewarding, true?
Personally I like the Marty better because of its more natural and varied tonal characteristics for each bracket of frequency. The Smallman no doubt sounds louder, but it’s like every note is amplified digitally and the uniqueness of each note has been “normalized “ . That is the reason I much prefer the traditional sweet sound of the Spanish guitar over the modern guitars.
I share the opinion of Guitar Ascendat, but when I listen to a guitar by Greg the sound pierces my ears to the soul. I feel full and I understand that maybe it can be a personal sensation, but it was I feel. Greetings from Argentina
The Smallman's sound like a giant tin can , although lots of volume and personality.. overall super fine guitars, every Marty i've heard has been sweet and pure - very natural.
Smallman es totalmente diferente, más abierta y contrastante, con sonidos bajos contundentes, claros medios y cristalinos agudos, sabiendo tocarla es la mejor guitarra del mundo 👍!!!
There is something totally unique about the Smallman sound. As much as I liked the Marty, my immediate reaction to the Smallman was 'Wow that's incredible'! I'd like to own both of them.
If I had to play a concert, I would opt for the Smallman. I feel it has more clarity to its sound, and of course we already know about the loudness of his guitars. The Marty sounds more "muddy" in this video. (No I am not at all saying that it sounds muddy). The other interesting thing for me is that in this video, I feel the Smallman sounds more "traditional" than the non-lattice Marty.
On a Smallman every note sounds like every other note. I guess nicer people say the same thing in another way--"a well balanced instrument." Is this a good thing? I don't know, I don't even like the idea. Kind of a strange thing to say for someone who loves Bach but IMHO all notes are not created equal. Clean separation of voices is the means; harmony and resonance is the end goal (again, my humble opinion, and it's a wrong one I've been told many times before). Also, did the world run out of cedar trees?
Honestly, how can you really tell on a UA-cam video and its attendant sound quality? It was interesting nonetheless and I would trust his comments at the end. Yes, the Smallman was definitely louder and it has become known for it great sustain. That would suit and be liked by many.
Both sound equally bad to me. Just get a traditional sounding guitar and you'll have 90% of the volume but all exquisite beauty that a guitar can produce.

Very nice. Both are beautiful and unique sounding. A very subjective choice. I like them both.
I think the Smallman is more dynamic regarding how the strength of the plucking affects the quality of the notes.
That´s it.

They are both absolutely magnificent sounding.

what's the name of the pieces you have played please .?

What is the name of the piece you on the bass theme? Both sounds amazing
The S.Marty one has (in my ears ) a more intimate ,warmer sound.

Yeah, but that Smallman's got a mouth though, right? Practically screaming at you. Wonderful.
Thank you for this presentation!

Umberto, I agree 100% with what you said in your comment.
The small man has its own little orchestra playing inside, it sounds beautiful, although I would love to own both.
They are very nice instruments. But, for me, Smallman souded better. By the way, the chosen musics are very beatifull too. Thanks.
Lovely playing.
What's the 2nd music piece title?
la simon marty sono mejor para mi saludos de los mochis sinaloa mexico
Both have good tones but for me smallman captivates the soul with its warmth.
I like the volume and sound quality of the Simon Marty better than the Smallman.
Someone knows what he plays at 2:08? What song is that? It's beautiful.
would be interested, too!
"The Bonnie Banks Of Loch Lomond " also known as "By Yon Bonnie Banks" (Scottish)

Arranged by David Russell (bonnie banks of loch lomond, traditional). On his album Message of the Sea
Smallman is in another class.
Both lovely instruments but I prefer the sound of the Smallman.
I would like to know the title of the first piece (at 0.37 and 1.28). Somedoy could help me?
Mia favorita by Daniel Fortea
Greg Smallman... just amazing!
Great guitat and great price..
Umberto is right. Totally agree. If they give me one, anyway, I would choose the Marty. Smallman is too powerful and misses something.

And at 2:08 ? What song is that?
Smallman is better
Belíssimo os dois violões, esta muito perto da perfeição. Precisamos desse tipo de violão aqui no BRASIL.
Personally, I like Smallman more for it has a deeper tone.
marty for me though i love the power of the smallman
Wow , small man is owning for my preference

Smallman sounds significantly louder than the other.
Toooop
One it's Michael Jordan and the another one it's lebron James. Which it's better??....? Lol
I prefer the poney
Provate senza microfono sarebbe stato meglio

smallman is brighter and louder but both guitars are excellent
