    * UPDATE * (September 2023) - Since publishing this video, Google have increased the AUE date (the date up to which the Chromebook receives ChromeOS feature and security updates) to June 2030.

    Hi and thanks for your concise and informative review. I'm a bit 'late to the game' on this one but this model is currently £139 @ Currys and I need a small light machine to take with me on a trip in a few weeks [bloody airlines with all their weight restrictions!!]. This would seem to fit the bill for my requirements. Currently have an Asus Flip C434 @ home that cost me about £550 and I generally like it but the sound is dreadful and need to use my bluetooth speaker to enhance. Mum just picked up a HP Chromebook from Currys for £189 [forget which model but v similar looking to this one ... think it's 14" screen tho'] and it has B&O speakers on top of keyboard so does a great job sound wise. It's really good and light too in comparison to my Asus. After all that whittering I've done above, all I really want to know please is do you think the sound quality on this 11a is decent enough? I noticed during your vid that the speakers on this are located underneath too .. .
    Thank you !

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Deborah, thanks for the background. I'm surprised the sound on your ASUS Flip C434 isn't up to much - are the speakers positioned in the same way as on the C433, see in my video here including a sound test - ua-cam.com/video/s8ZsCOKnnyU/v-deo.html You shouldn't expect too much from the speakers on the HP 11a, it does the job but won't blow you away. Have you considered the Acer Spin 311? Also very lightweight, but with a better screen (IPS rather than TN as on the HP 11a), has a touchscreen and is convertible. The last point means that although the speakers are on the bottom, when you flip the screen around and use the keyboard as a base, say to watch a movie, the speakers are firing up. See my review and the comments link to a sound test - ua-cam.com/video/CcH9JZRkJLI/v-deo.html If you see my recent Tweet (@MergeDroid) unfortunately you'll see you've just missed a deal on this, but it's £179 new from AO on ebay if you search for item 115310983170. If you'd consider a 'refurb' (open box) you can save more. If you have a bit of time before you travel perhaps have a look over the review and follow me on Twitter for notification of new deals. Let me know if any of this helps and your thoughts. Either way, enjoy the holiday!

    • @debonweb

      @@MergeDroid Hi again and thanks for your reply. Yes, the speakers on my C434 are positioned in the same place as the C433. Perhaps it's my hearing that isn't what it once was! :) .... but the sound on my Mum's new HP 14" is much better than my Asus C434. I just didn't really want to buy another with the speakers underneath if it was going to be like my C434.
      I've just watched a few of your other reviews for other 11" model Chromebooks and the Asus 311 looks OK but I think the AUE is only till 2026. For £139 I think this HP will probably do what I need as long as I can actually hear it! It seems small and lightweight enough too. I did the 'ask an owner' on Currys website and someone's responded and said the sound is good. I know not to expect anything brilliant from a Chromebook sound-wise but just as long as I can hear it will be good enough for me! 🙂
      Thanks again for responding.

The gen. 6 has had some good price action recently and was available as low as £149 at Currys (and still is - again, check my Tweets or see item 588831 at Currys). You'll still get great battery life, you'll double the storage (to 64GB), have a newer processor, an extra year of ChromeOS updates and a nicer interface (keyboard, touchpad and the IPS touchscreen of course).....as well as it being convertible. The HP 11a might have the edge on battery life (but not by much) and the trade off is the TN screen it has.

With regards to Intel or Mediatek.....the MT8183 is great, you can even get a Flex 3 with one, but the newer N4500 does bring an edge in general performance that I am noticing. Checking from another Chromebook, via the Google Play store 'PUBG Mobile' and 'Call of Duty: Mobile Season 5' are available to install. I expect therefore it will be available on the HP for install also and hopefully play OK....HOWEVER, I would say in 2024 you can probably find a Chromebook with a newer processor than the MT8183 for the same money though that will handle things, especially gamimg, better. Also options with nicer displays. Check some of my recent review videos and deal posts on X/Twitter for some idea or drop me a question in comments.

      Against the MT8183 they are really similar enough. You will get an extra year of ChromeOS updates with the MediaTek option. Check the ports and connectivity on both machines though, I'd imagine the MediaTek based on may have less USB connections for example. Otherwise only be concerned if you need ARM compatibility for certain games from the Google Play Store, if so, go for the MediaTek. Hope this helps.
