- In another installment on the 1961 David Bradley antique garden tractor, Taryl attempts to put new axle seals in after now getting it running (check out the first video on "Why Is It Hard To Start?") This proves to be no easy task as these seals kick Taryl's butt! But he wouldn't be Taryl Fixes All if he didn't get the job done and done right. Tune in for another great repair by small engine master, Taryl Dactal. Now There's Your Dinner!!

Let’s take time to admire how Taryl doesn’t edit out his moments of frustration. He keeps it real. Lets us DIYers know it won’t always be a walk in the park. Bravo. He put nicks on the shaft. He doesn’t mean Stevie Nicks.
Sunday morning with Taryl, my girl used to ask me why I watch all these old engine and equipment videos, couple weeks later and now she's a Taryl fan too. She digs the teeth, baby! Love from Texas.
You’re right, for me it was my Sunday evening (couple of hours ahead) entertainment here in Germany. Greetings to everyone and have a nice evening and a great week!
Same my wife asked me why do watch this stuff when I don’t have a mower issue I told her she just wouldn’t understand it’s a guy thing lol 🤷♂️
Taryl needs his own TV show, bought some if his stuff maybe send Junior to Lawn Mower College.
Texas women are surprised if her man even has teeth

gold! jerry! gold!
LMFAO
Best comedy on youtube today❤
A few years ago I had an old Garden Way Roto-Tiller... customer said all the seals were leaking. Both the tiller shaft & the wheel shafts.
Like Taryl... the old ones put up such a fight.. I did all the things Taryl shows. I also damaged the surfaces of the axles themselves so it took me multiple times of installing new seals until I finally polished the shafts well enough to prevent leaks. I believe I spent 6 hours over 2 days. The cussing was off the charts.
Man, I'm glad I had my safety glasses on while watching this video. One of the wires from your buffing tool flew out & almost hit me in the eye!!!
You gotta love how heavy duty they used to make things in the old days. No plastic gear boxes and junk like today. The screw method with a screw on each side has worked for me.
I have a couple of slide hammers I did that with also. An old timer showed me that. That's why I always try to tell young mechanics to not be arrogant. Arrogance closes the mind and you stop learning because you think you know it all already. Never stop learning or you will never refine your craft. You are a great teacher. I bet your brother and uncle are also.
Sometimes, not saying on this machine but when you stack seals you put the seals in back to back. One to keep the oil in one to keep the dirt out. Great content as usual! You would think me working on this stuff all week I wouldn't want to see more but I love it!
My thoughts exactly!
That thick seal sure wanted Taryl’s dinner! ARF ARF ARF!
Taryl,
It was a pleasure watching you struggle on that seal. It brought some sort of hidden evil emotion to the surface, a culmination of all the times I struggled doing that exact same thing and felt like I must be the only one. Lol..
Anyway great video man, keep it up.
FYI, if you don’t have one, pick up a Matco or Mac seal puller.
Bent at 90 deg on both ends, one end is short and designed to be the seal end, the other side you hammer on; has a handle in the middle to hold onto.
Best seal puller design I have found; hook it and hammer the end.
I recently realized that watching taryl work gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling that watching my grandpa fix things gave me. Thanks Taryl
Those brakes are a primitive version of traction control. If you're spinning on one side, you pull the brake to get the other wheel to dig in. Nice video once again.
Might be considered primitive but brilliant simplicity. They were also used for tight turning. Larger tractors like a farmall cub have left and right brake pedals that can be tied together once you are done in the field
I’m 44 years old with plenty of motivation to do stuff/work on stuff.
Unfortunately I have bad arthritis.
When I’m having a really bad flare-up, I watch Tarrel and Crew as your casual style of filming makes it feel like I’m hanging out in the shop.
“Scratches the itch” so to speak on days I’m not able to. 😊
My Sunday vice, thank you Taryl!
Wow! The realities of doing the work. Sometimes things go good… Most of the time they don’t. There is nothing like the satisfaction of getting the job done. Nice job, thank you. Happy birthday Taryl! 🎉
Easiest way to get the Seal out is throw it a Fish - LOL
Good project on a heavy duty unit
Happy Hatching Day Mr. Dactal!
And There's your B Day cake!
Oohhhh! I like that one! He is Taryl Dactyl! If they see this one, I know they would appreciate it.
Another good DB repair video. Noone will pull out one of those thick land seal out in much less than 2 hours. Tip on the vari-speed...never move it if the engine isnt running, as it can go out of time, and always put it back down to the slow range before shutting it off, or its harder to start the engine.
T, when using the lever hook seal puller, it is traditionally used in the key way.
I had seals kick my butt on a Troy bilt Bronco tiller this week. I started making a video of it, and after it kicked my butt like it did, I didn't upload it. Lol, it sounds bad, but I'm glad even Taryl has problems from time to time! Great video as always!
You can't find those good old seals like that anymore, when I was a kid we used to run into a lot of them with leather instead of rubber seals.
Happy Birthday Taryl from Tom and Julie in Missouri i am a 61 Model too
The next time you want to clean that axle shaft off, start it up, put it in gear and hold some crocus paper on it !!!not krocus the band ,crocus the paper!! You should use chisel and not a screwdriver to cut into metal. You should know that already. Keep different size pieces of pvc pipe handy. You can cut long lengths on a chop saw for a seal driver that slides over the axle
I really enjoy seeing all these videos on older equipment . It all just takes me back to the days of seeing all these old machines in operation , and having worked on a lot of them myself in years past. And I also agree with ya , that looks like a set of the most stubborn seals I’ve ever seen to remove ! lol! Thanks for your time and videos on all these things !
You must have the patience of a saint. When that happens to me (usually on days that end in 'y'), my language is not "family-friendly." I think I'd probably even be kicked off most docks!
my dad taught me something about that type of seal that his dad told him about...i want to say you had to put a threaded pipe casing cap over one axel end and work the axel back and forth to get the seals to millimeter by millimeter dislodge until they got 3/4 of the way out before they would pop out after about 3/4" side to side motion going due to the tolerances being so tight that the felt had to be compressed inward to act as the seal with the rubber ring. i'm having a hard time remembering as i've only done it like twice in my life and my dad helped both times since i was a kid and there was some trick he used to get hydraulic fluid in there and then he would lightly heat it up first. i remember blowing a whole can of wd40 to clean all the grease off before he could do that.
your patience is outstanding! i woulda been cussing and throwing tools after the 1st 5 minutes 🤣🤣
So you throw tantrums at every opportunity. Probably go looking for opportunities. Who changes your diaper?
@@I_Dont_Answer_Questions nice reply. you must be full of patience. probably got all that practice waiting on your sister/ wife to fall asleep so you can take advantage of her.
New B52 song? Love Tap, Baby love Tap, Taryl Fix all with a Love Tap! Music from Love Shack... That grass clipping and juice makes me think of that (AG1) stuff everybody is pushing on the interscreen! Uhhhhh!
I always thought those seal removing tools were used after you remove the shaft going thru the seal. But what do I know! I saw a dude remove a seal like this by using a screw screwed into the seal and then he had some vise grips with a sliding weight on it clamped to the head of the screw. Worked like a champ.
Hey Taryl Good morning to you sir that mower looks like the one on green acres except some.what smaller don't work to hard God Bless you and yours and there's your dinner😂😂🎉😅😅
Thumbs up great video, they were built strong back in the day
Smart using the hub to drive new seals in.
keep the good videos coming. we wait every sunday morning. thanks
I believe Taryl has or is a really good editor. Nobody is not that calm and collected. I'm glad you never give up on projects. Sometimes I need to take a break and go look at the garden for awhile. It helps.
Greetings from Ohio! Happy birthday Taryl, love the videos!
Thanks for ALL the great videos! I have learned new ideas and learned thru your experiences. I have read most of the comments on this video to learn from the viewers also.
I would like to comment on the seal installation also. Filling the outer seal with grease will keep the lip lubricated since the inner seal will stop any oil getting to the outer seal. As far as turning the outer seal around, it wont last long anyways because of the crap that will get packed between the brake drum and the seal. So, to help keep out the crap with the seal installed either way, could you have put a felt ring between the seal and the brake drum?
I seen a viewer suggest a cap chisel. I have used a cape chisel many many times to cut the metal. You just have to be careful not to damage the casting.
Thanks again for all your work to make these videos. I'm hooked now.
Great job looks like a late night 🌃
❤❤❤❤❤😊
Those seals put up an epic battle, but in the end, you SHAMED and HUMBLED them! No match for the Tarylinator!
That is one cool, old tractor right there.
So nice to watch someone who knows how tools work. I worked in Maintenance for 29 years and in all that time, I was constantly telling a co worker time and time again not to use a file back and forth. 😑😂
They put up a fight, but it was actually the seals that got their butts kicked. Very good job. This video goes to show that two of the most important tools in your shop are patience and persistence.
I like when you qualify the bolt size and just the wrench size that fits it.
Thank you for sharing. Nice repair👍
It honestly helps me to see the frustrations.
In a weird way it gives me more patience, knowing that it’s not just me.
Another great video where I learned something I will put to use someday . Thank you guys and happy birthday to you Tayrl .
Awesome, Taryl!!! Another great presentation. Thank You!!!
It's always great to watch do a job that knows what they are doing.
Anther enjoyable episode!
Awesome video God Bless you and your family
Thank you ALL for what you do to enlighten my day! Thank you!
Nice repair job Taryl.
Watching you attempt to get the rear seal out made me think of the pirates of the Caribbean mantra if your on davie jones's ship "part of the crew, part of the ship" Lucky you have a seal to replace the old one or you may have ended being a part of it, you know gotta have a captain n' all
Tale note, Grass Rats, Taryl is using the correct technique of filing. Note the use of a handle attached to the file. Also note Taryl pushes the file then lifts it from the axle shaft when the cutting stroke is done. He starts each following stroke with a forward push and lifts again when the cut is done. He repeats this process until he has removed the perfect amount of the burr from the shaft to allow the hub to be smoothly removed from the shaft. You should always use your files using this method to achieve the best results when using files.
Thanks for sharing Taryl.
The shipping tag wire is a great idea! Kudos to you for not giving up. Some jobs demand a lot more persistence and this was definitely one of them. Happy birthday cuz!
Right seal was a nightmare getting out! Wow!
Sunday morning again love it weighted all week
The name David Bradley was synonymous with farm and garden equipment to Sears as was the J.C. Higgins name was to their hunting, fishing and outdoor lines.
Thanks for the instructions on seal removal and replacement. Great job. Woohoo!
Cool piece nice job on the seal replacement…👍👍
Wow 1961 this is amazing still runs love it and old tractors
I'm at the point where your removing the first set of hubs. You solved a mystery for me! I was working on my snowblower, last week, and I could nit figure out why one of my 5/16" sockets was too big fir the nut I was trying to remove, and the other fit just fine. Now I know I have a set of eight-point sockets, designed for square nuts and bolt heads. Thnk you for the info.
taryl for auto seals that are recessed and i cant get the puller in. i use a dent puller with a screw and screw it into the seal and slide hammer it out. works amazing.
Good for another 100 miles!
Love your videos and keep up the sound effects, they makeme laugh
Taryl, I redid a 59 David Bradley axle. Fought over an hour to remove, in pieces. So your not alone. It u should have gotten the numbers off the seal before u destroyed it. Was a real PIA cross referencing the PN’s for both sides. Glad that’s done!
Wow old boy them was some rugged old seals 😅. As always old boy good job 👏.
On hubs with two grub/set screws, once the hub is off, I grind a flat spot where the second screw dug into the shaft. That way when it needs to come off later there won't be a raised bump to prevent the hub from coming off. Gotta love the old stuff!
I really enjoyed this one. Never heard of DB mowers. Cavity search was great. I truly lost it on "Relax. We're almost done David." LMAO!
Right after this video i ran out to my garage with a box of trisquits and made a grease, grass an trisquit dinner !! Best dinner ive had in a long time !!!! Yummmmm ! 🤣
Kroil is the best thing I have ever used to free stuck parts. I have been working on farm equipment for 35 years and have only had it fail to free a stuck bolt/part twice. And this includes exhaust manifolds that were in place for 50 years.
I'd think a piece of schedule 40 pvc pipe slid over the axle would drive those seals in evenly and safe?
Thanks for your help
Hey buddy,
That wasn’t luck getting those seals out, that was pure skill. I enjoy your style and humor. I intend to watch every video you make.
By the way, I also enjoy watching your skits.
My knuckles started bleeding just watching this LOL.
I look forward to your videos and I say that you Mr. Tryl have earned every penny of that labor cost.
That was a tough one for sure, I've tried the fancy seal pullers etc. But one day I had one that was givin me fits, ya kno where your just seein red goin wtf!!! This shouldn't be that hard to pop out, and I looked at the wall of tools hanging and seen a good ol quality pan can lid opener and said hmm.... yep it popped it right out. Hope this tip may help someone. Thanks for sharing!!
All ready for may tractor show 🎉 wooooooo
Nice to see someone who knows how to use a file correctly! Well done Taryl
This is real mechanic*ing*. Great job and loved the patience with them seals
Wow that one needs its own spot on the wall fame.
I’m thinking heat the housing up a tad and try to remove the sea
Going to be very difficult as you can tell but a a very little heat helps
Thank You’ll for the video
Get a cup of coffee and walk around 😢
That is a sweet old tractor really cool patina on the
I removed a bunch of hard seals on Outbord motors that stuff is calledOakham that felt you call it
The side dish was quite the treat, before the dinner.
I was eating some Butter Pecan ice cream when you pulled that brake off with that DELICIOUS looking grass and gear oil mixture... Made my ice cream even mo betta!
Nice job man hard work for sure
i was born in 61 aswell, great video again
Nice job Taryl. A suggestion: A short piece if brass rod the right diameter under that square headed set screw with the jam nut that goes against the shaft instead of the key will prevent burrs and make for easier removal in the future. By the way, it's getting difficult to find equipment that's older than we are now.
Hey there great video big fan of y’all’s I’m a 1961 model too 🇺🇸😎
They were some tough seals, but worth the effort to keep that old tractor running.
I just drill 2 holes & put wood screws in to pull those seals out, works like a charm. N there's your dinner.
Sometimes if you heat the seal up with a torch it will expand and then spray a little water on the housing to shrink it. Let it cool down and then try to pull it out.
I have had good luck with threading in a long screw to pop out seals that are stubborn. I don't like to do this because you risk damaging the bearing cage by doing that but sometimes you have no choice and need to get the job done. I order bearings and metal clad seals together because of this and I always order extra seals in case one gets damaged during installation. I like to order double lip seals like they have on boat trailers it keeps water out and grease in, if one lip fails your still in business. If it is a high heat application you want viton seals and o-rings.
I've used a pneumatic exhaust cutter bit... The one with a round edge... I used a hammer got it tight to the edge of the seal and bent the seal down similar to splitting it with out getting into the seating surface... Hope it helps ...
Those are great screwdrivers! I just retired & sold mine to share the love!
Your funny 😁 🎉man love your humor and your online store
Taryl you should get a caped chisel. I have removed any number of broken nipples and seals with one
Happy birthday hope you enjoy your day
Wiss said ya I had seals come out hard . vary good class thank u .alsome thank you vary much .
The felt seal is a lot more durable than a lip seal when it comes to sand and dirt applications. It was used in final drive applications on older excavators.
Morgan knocker auto body slide hammer 3/4 pipe shaft, has many angle hooks even a chain and hook attachment, and a j hook. And a screw, and a threaded end.
