Not 100% sure why you got streaks in your resin. However, it may have been due to the form not being level and when the pigments were settling to the bottom they were flowing in one direction.......if you want to have swirls in your finish keep going back to your epoxy and swirling it with a stick to bring those metallics back to the surface. I swirl mine every 30 mins for about 2.5 hrs until the epoxy is too thick and it works great.
Oh that’s a good thought. It worked out quite well I think for the river flow look tho. Happy mistake. So that’s a way to get intentional swirls! I will have to try it out. Thanks for the tip!
Oh thank you. It is more of a temporary workspace for now in my parents basement until I can get my own workshop. Work with what you have though right!
Thank you, I am glad you like them. Definitely give it a shot you can do it. Feel free to share them with me on Instagram (@tbbuilds) or email (tbbuildsco@gmail.com) once your done!
How does the poly wear over time? Looking to try this myself on award plaques, and seeing most cutting boards and table videos use oil. But think I will try your poly route instead since an award doesn’t need to be cut on or food safe. Thanks!
It has lasted a few years now and worked out really well. Definitely would not need a food safe oil for a plaque. Both oil and polyurethane work well. To give a crisp look on the epoxy.
Not sure if this has been asked yet but you said the base layer was already in. What do you mean by that and if there is a clear layer below the blue won’t it show on the ends when all is done??
Yeah so I poured one thin layer of just clear epoxy. This just helps seal the wood to prevent air bubbles in the colored pour and you won’t see any of the clear epoxy
Awesome! I think the coasters are a great starting point. Yes, the tubes tape stop the leaks entirely on the blue coasters, the orange/red coasters leaked just a little bit even with the tape, but I think it would have been much worse without it. Best of luck! Let me know if you have other questions.
love the colors. maybe route out your name, a squiggly line routed out underneath and all routing filled in with an epoxy color you like using an led strip on the back to light up the epoxy. use on a shelf or wall hanging?
Thanks! I actually have made a nameplate board as gifts for family (have a recent video up for that one) but I didn’t use LED’s that would be a cool idea for future project!
There are top coats or varnishes that you can put on epoxy projects to protect it from UV. I have never done it but I see that total boat makes several. 1. Total Boat - CAST N TURN CLEAR URETHANE CASTING AND TURNING RESIN 2. Total Boat - HALCYON WATER-BASED MARINE VARNISH
I have heard good things about Total Boat especially with deep pours. From what I understand it is good at not causing bubbles to get trapped as badly. I am sure you could have success with other brands, I just decided to use theirs.
This project came out quite nice and there is not too much I would have changed for these coaster but epoxy can be very tedious. Be very mindful of the pouring TEMPERATURE recommended by epoxy manufacturer. In another project I did I didn’t pay attention to this and the epoxy never set right and I had to re-pour the whole thing. (Video coming soon). The sealing layer of epoxy is important to keep out air bubbles. Also can use heat gun over epoxy (which I didn’t in this video) to get rid of air bubbles. Read @Rob W comment (pinned to top) on this video too for some good advice. Thanks for watching, I hope your project turns out nice. DM me on Instagram or Facebook once you are done, I’d love to see what you make!
I should have used a router table, but instead did something potentially dangerous (I would not recommend repeating this) and used clamps to hold the router in place. Not very safe, just didn’t think much about it and didn’t have a router table at the time.
Is it an old router bit? You might want to look at getting a new bit. When router bits get old they don’t cut well and will tend to burn the wood. Do you know what type of wood it is? If it’s a hard wood it maybe especially important to have sharp router bits. Hope this helps.
Okay. Try removing less material at a time. You can also experiment with the speed of the bit and how fast you pushing the router. What diameter drill bit and how deep of a cut are you making?
Continue to swirl the epoxy until it is just starting to set up. 2- 2.5 hours.. You don't need to do it often. Once an hour or so until you get a pattern you like.
The base layer seals the wood. This is so that you don’t get bubbles in the final pour and it doesn’t seep into the wood and end up with the epoxy level being lower than the top wood surfaces. I have done it without the base coat and it is noticeable and I recommend using base coat every time with wood. Other non-porous “form” materials you may not need to.
Started with 60 grit to level the epoxy and then increased to 220 on the orbital sander than switched to 326 grit by hand and a 800 grit to get the final touch. Glad I could help! Hope you enjoyed!
Hello. I almost never comment on videos on UA-cam, but I saw something on this video that I just have to say something about. First, I am by no means an expert woodworker. I just got started a couple years ago. Second, you do great work and it does my heart good to see a young man like yourself getting into the craft. However, what I saw starting at the 9:04 mark scared the bejesus out of me. Please, please, never, ever use a router like that again. Either secure the piece down to the table and pass the router over it (I know; those pieces are small and it would not be easy). Or better yet, get a tabletop router table and you will make 10 times better cuts and work 100 times safer (using it with a push block of course). I know for a young man your age your tool budget might be tight and a good tabletop router table goes for a little over $200.00 on Amazon so I'll make you a deal. Start a small crowdfunding account, announce it on your channel, and send me a message directly and I'll be your first sponsor. I'm willing to bet there are other viewers out there that would be willing to give a few bucks to make sure that router never tears up any of your fingers.

I just bought my first gallon of epoxy and considered the coasters also, does that tyvek tape stop leaks when you make small dams like that?

Why did you use total boat? Nice job
I have heard good things about Total Boat especially with deep pours. From what I understand it is good at not causing bubbles to get trapped as badly. I am sure you could have success with other brands, I just decided to use theirs.
Looking to start an epoxy project of my own(never done one before) what are some things you would do different or change in the process?
This project came out quite nice and there is not too much I would have changed for these coaster but epoxy can be very tedious.

I love this. What did you use to tape the sides and for the base coat?
I used tyvek sheathing tape. You could probably use masking tape although I haven’t tried that.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Also, did you use a torch to remove bubbles? Thank you
I did not on these, but I have used a heat gun on other epoxy projects and it seemed to work well
new to this myself. Why did you pour a clear layer first as opposed to doing one single color pour?
The first layer is a real thin layer of clear epoxy just to seal the wood so that you don’t get air bubbles in the rest of the epoxy.
Hi what type and brand sander did you use?
In the video I used a porter cable orbital sander.
I have since bought a cordless Dewalt Orbital sander (DCW210B).
What kind of bit did you use for hollowing out the river section
I used various width (1/4in to 1/2in) straight bits for removing material for the “river flow” and then a chamfer bit for the edges
What did you use to hold the router to the table
I should have used a router table, but instead did something potentially dangerous (I would not recommend repeating this) and used clamps to hold the router in place. Not very safe, just didn’t think much about it and didn’t have a router table at the time.
I am trying this with some wood I purchased from michaels. As I am using the router. The wood is burning. Do you thinks it's bc of the wood I'm using?
Is it an old router bit? You might want to look at getting a new bit. When router bits get old they don’t cut well and will tend to burn the wood.
Do you know what type of wood it is? If it’s a hard wood it maybe especially important to have sharp router bits.

@@TBBuilds no it is a brand new router (purchased within the month) and a new bit. Purchased today
Okay. Try removing less material at a time. You can also experiment with the speed of the bit and how fast you pushing the router.

@@TBBuilds thank you

Thanks for the tip! I will have to try it out on the next epoxy project. Hope you enjoyed the video.
Did you put backer’s on them?
I put felt feet on the corners
What type of wood did you use, and is it a 1x4 (so, 3.5" wide)? TIA
I used red oak and yes it is 1x4 (so actually 0.75” x 3.5”)
Why did you have a base layer of expoy?
The base layer seals the wood. This is so that you don’t get bubbles in the final pour and it doesn’t seep into the wood and end up with the epoxy level being lower than the top wood surfaces.
I have done it without the base coat and it is noticeable and I recommend using base coat every time with wood. Other non-porous “form” materials you may not need to.
What is used on the side to keep the epoxy from seeping on the sides??
Tyvek roofing tape.
What grit of sand paper did you use? Thanks!
Started with 60 grit to level the epoxy and then increased to 220 on the orbital sander than switched to 326 grit by hand and a 800 grit to get the final touch. Glad I could help! Hope you enjoyed!
What is the router bit called that you used?
I just used various width (1/4in to 1/2in) straight bits for removing material for the “river flow” and then a chamfer bit for the edges
@@TBBuilds so you used a 1/4 to carve the lines then 1/2 in to remove the excess wood?
Yep you got it 👍
No PPE...especially a respirator? Other than that awesome video.
Yeah, I didn’t realize that at that time to be honest. Need to look into that. Thanks for the support though, glad you liked it!
I bought a silicone mold. Once it’s cured I’ll cut them to size.
Oh awesome! Hope it turns out well. Just be careful on your mixing ratios and the temperature of the room that it cures in
@@TBBuilds I’ve been using resin for a few years.
Oh cool. What is one of your favorite projects you have done?
@@TBBuilds we build a 4x2 walnut and resin table.
Oh sweet. Do you have some place you share your stuff that I could check out?
What thickness?
The wood is 3/4” thick and so I routed out half that. So 3/8” thick epoxy.

Amd well vented area plz amd mask even sanding ! Ppl have pass from doing this shit ! And u will get headaches please be safe make it fun !
