Just for clarification, I have the R1280DB, and they are not those. What you have is the R1280DBS, which has an additional subwoofer out. Else, I believe we have pretty much the same speakers alright. I was initially very impressed by them as I spent the better half of a decade listening through monitor speakers; however, I powered them on again now just to remind myself how they sound like after a little bit over a year of using passive speakers on a good quality amplifier, and I was immediately hit with their limitations. They sound compressed and lack detail in the midrange, the highs are OK and lows are probably where their best performance lies, especially with tone controls. If you're using these as an upgrade from a monitor speaker, there's definitely a day and night difference; however, they are no audiophile speakers by any means. Definitely a good bang for the buck though, and I use them mainly now for my MIDI keyboard.

What do you recommend as an entry level audiophile level alternative?

@@Amor_fati.Memento_Mori I am not a reviewer, even though I tried my share of speakers. A small pair of speakers (not as small as these) that I have tried that still fits well on a desktop and gives you an audiophile experience on a budget is the Klipsch R51M. They have very nice detail in the high and mid frequency ranges, and they image beautifully. The low frequency, while not exceptional, is still good enough for many genres. However, these are passive speakers that require an amplifier to work. There is another active version of these, the R51PM, but I haven't tested it so I can't speak out of experience. In theory, they should use the same drivers/crossover and produce similar results; however, there is a big variable here, which is the included amp in them that will definitely have an impact on how they sound. Try to see if there are any comparisons between these two on YT or elsewhere to make an informed decision, and take note that these are obsolete so you're either buying them used or as a new old stock. In either case, avoid getting ripped off as I have seen some wild listings for these speakers! I paid only $360 for them brand new in box with tax and shipping included.

Sadly, it seems the twin input on these only lets you switch, not combine sound sources. That's not what I'm looking for, sadly.

Thanks for watching, glad you liked the video! I haven’t had the chance to test the R1700BT, but from the spec sheet, they seem very similar, maybe with slightly more powerful sound
