      Do you think it would be wise to get an internal sound card or external (DAC? Sound card?) to pair with the R1280DBs? Using an older 4th gen Intel board here with standard Realtek drivers. Not sure of the specific drivers atm. But worried that the stock Realtek drivers just won't push 'premium' sound with what the R1280s (or any bookshelf speakers for that matter) are capable of.

    I think it really depends on your region because pricing can vary significantly. In Asia, these speakers costs under USD 100 after conversion into local currency which no doubt makes it the best value for money & it can even be cheaper during seasonal sales. I dont think you can find anything from creative or logitech to compete with this model from Edifier. I heard a lot of positive comments about Klipsch but Klipsch are niche product in Asia so they tend to costs more than in the US. Therefore, yea, these speakers arent at all overrated. You just need to be smart on where and when you purchase it. Reviewer should recommend a substitute product if he thinks there's something better at this price point.

      I agree. I'm in Thailand. The audio quality of my bedroom 43" TV is terrible, like most flat screen TVs. I wanted decent sound not just for Netflix and UA-cam but for audio streaming as well. I tried several sound-bars in the under $200 range but they just didn't have good tonal range for music, especially base unless you invested in a sub-woofer, not practical for a small bedroom.
      When I heard about powered bookshelf speakers, I started researching on YT and Amazon. The Edifier 1280DB kept coming up. The only competition sold here n Thailand were the Kanto series: 4 & 2. I auditioned both the Kanto 2 (about $229) & 4s ($350) and they sounded good but light on bass, especially the "2".
      The Edifier R1280DB was $112 online so I bought them sight unseen. I've had them for close to a week now and I am very impressed with them. They are certainly several notches above any sound-bar I tried, the bass is clean and not boxy at all. Mid-range is very good with human voices on TV and treble is clean and distinct without being shrill. One pleasant surprise was no BT lag when watching movies; dialog was in perfect sync. Tone and volume controls work well. The only thing missing is balance control.
      Hard to go wrong with these speakers, whether for TV or computer, you get your money's worth.

    My TV soundbar has a button that can switch between a TV and movie EQ setting and music, which makes speech a bit clearer. I guess that's one advantage to speakers designed for TV, although the overall sound quality might be lower than those HiFi speakers. I do find the sound mixing on modern movies and some TV shows extremely annoying as it makes the speech almost inaudible or muddy a lot of the time, which isn't usually the fault of the speakers themselves.

    Hey Stu, I saw a lot of reviews of this speaker and most people tell, that the digital analog converter is trash so you shouldn't use the digital inputs. You should try connecting your speakers via line in to the TV instead. This should give you a richer sound and clearer voice. I am currently considering to buy em as a christmas gift for my sister, because she needs white speakers and they are rare in that price range. I hope you will update your video ;) THX for your work

  • @richclips
    @richclips 4 роки тому +15

    I wouldn't expect them to be amazing for £120..... The company I used to work for had several pairs of them as confidence speakers just so you knew there was audio present. Also it's very common for products like this that have spdif digital in, to only support pcm, hence most TVs have the ability to select pcm or "stream" out via their digital outputs ..nice video, thanks Stu :)

  • @SangsakaCreative
    @SangsakaCreative 3 роки тому +11

    I bought this speaker around $90, connected to TV via optical and it's suprissed me a lot, i use Q Acoustics 3020 connected to Onkyo A9010 as a daily desktop speakers, and i find this sub $90 speakers have a bit similar characteristics, the agility of the base response is even more pronounce than QA3020, while the 3020 excels on sound separation, soundstage, and amazing vocal characteristics.
    If you want to get the best sound from it, use optical connection, the RCA cable supplied from the box is not that good, that's what caused these speakers sounds a bit muddy.
    As for the price, it's no brainer, i never imagined these cheap speaker able to catch up with bookshelf passive speakers that cost 2 times more expensive, or even 3 times if you dont have an amplifier.

    Came across this video as I was looking at reviews for the Edifier T5 subwoofer to go with my 1280DBS speakers. Had them over a year so far and they have been great. No whining from the AC circuitry while they are on standby like I've experienced from my old Creative T40 Series II speakers. Bluetooth has never dropped a connection, and I got them initially simply due to the low price and the fact that there are separate Optical and Coaxial inputs, so I could plug my CD and MD decks in without needing digital splitters. Having a remote control is just icing on a reasonably delicious cake.

      thinking in getting these.. in every review of these and their siblings models variations, no one talks about if the inputs are always active or not or if they sound way different, depending on the input being used. for example, I see on photos the detail on the side control panel, that the input LED indicating which input is being used, it has them grouped, aside from BT. so it's BT - L1/L2 - OPT/COAX ..or something like that.
      does that mean that when selected L1/L2 (Line 1 & Line 2) they're both active?? I have a dual monitor setup where one I can run my computer and on the other my PS5 when online gaming, so I would need both lines active receiving the sound signal from each monitor and reproducing their respective sound. depending on the live service game on PS5 i game with discord on or running whatever assistant web-based program. so that means I need not only the image but also the sound, if you get what I mean.

    If you are interested in these, at least for TV or PC use i'd recommend Edifier R1700 or R1800. The bigger tweeter does a better job with vocals and price difference ain't that high. The feet on all of these aren't great, so you'll need supports or sponges to avoid having the bass sound muddy.

I simply wanted to have a general feel for this level of BT speakers. It is what it is and for that sort of money you can't really go wrong. Adjust your expectations/bass/treble and enjoy! How can I connect these to a simple Yamaha subwoofer with just ON/OFF and one control knob with an RCA input? I tested these with my four channel Yamaha mixer that has simple included effects for my acoustic guitar and vocals and these speakers sound acceptable believe it or not. But I don`t want to damage anything trying to connect a woofer improperly. I played drums and sang from 1982 until 1999 in bands but a 1988 car accident and chronic pain that got worse forced me to switch to acoustic guitar to continue performing. I bought two Powerwerks PW50 PA speakers that do have a dedicated subwoofer port but these tiny speakers can actually be used for small indoor gigs, believe it or not, and sound very nice.

  • @SharapovaFan

    What most should understand is that these are near-field monitors. They sound best when the speakers are at ear-level and within a short distance. Nothing else comes close to being a complete package at the R1280DB's price. These are active speakers that have bluetooth, coax and optical and are pretty much standalone solutions for the non-audiophile crowd who can't spend a ton of money on other audio equipment. Almost all other bookshelf speakers around the R1280DB's price range are passive, which means they're not standalone solutions.
    P.S. One of the key things most people forget about speakers is their room size. If your room is fairly small (less than 3.5 meters wall to wall or thereabouts), the R1280DB will sound great. Bigger spaces will require the higher end models such as the R2000DB. Output must be relative to room size. It's also one of the reasons why the R1280DB is inadequate for use as auxiliary TV speakers. The drivers aren't large enough to throw clarity at a distance. If you've got something like a 65" TV, you'd normally be sitting 2.5 to 3 meters away at least. The R1280DB would be inadequate at that distance, especially with its 4" drivers.

    As I get older and think back on my audio equipment choices and the plethora of audio enthusiasts who have helped me find equipment I have to say, equipment is "good" if it gives you what you want. I like a punchy bass as I listen to a lot of EDM. If I listen to say classic rock I find it'll muddy the sound, but since I listen to mostly EDM it's more of a priority to have bass. Lots of people say these Edifier speakers are lackluster and bass heavy, but if you listen to things that you feel need that punch of low end then these are a great option. Maybe some A5+ is better if you're a "purist" so they say and enjoy more mids treble and soundstage. That's the thing though, the A5+s are perfect for some people, and these Edifiers are perfect for others.
    Honestly I have some nice wide soundstage cans and speakers that work awesome for Jazz or Zeppelin and what have you, also have some nasty candy buds that spike the vocals and sub bass, just how I like.

    How do you attach these to a PC? The instructions in the box are useless. I have no idea what wire goes where on the back of the speakers - they come with various types of wires - to connect them up. The speaker connecting cable has two ports ont he back of both speakers but only one jack on the wire itself, so I have no idea if it goes in the white or red one. Please help by giving a good video on how to set these things up for technical dummies.

    I am very, very late to this review but I must say that I have been using these with my entry-level turntable setup for about a year or so and these are extremely fun speakers for music. I can not speak to their quality when watching movies, since I have not tested them in that setting. However, for music, especially vinyl use, they rock, and they rock hard.
    I am quite surprised that I never found this review when I was researching these speakers.
    Anyways, I love your videos, Stu. I hope my many-months-late opinion was of some use to some of you in your speaker searches.

    For many of us, "it's all about those connections." I have speakers for my desktop computer, speakers for my notebook computers, speakers for my keyboards, speakers for my mobile devices, a little sound bar for the TV right near my computer, and so on. Can I toss the whole lot of that stuff, and just use ONE pair of speakers -- with a remote control, no less -- with "decent" sound quality? Oh, sure, I know you can get better sound, but it's usually "bring more money," and it certainly isn't going to allow me to hook all of this stuff up to one pair of speakers, and do everything with wired connections. And no, I don't tend to want to use Bluetooth for this kind of stuff. In the end, I need two sets of RCA inputs, and one optical input, at the least. And I'm sure not finding much on the market with those connection capabilities.
