It wasn't a barge. A barge is an unpowered floating vessel. This was a container ship, equipped with very powerful engines capable of propelling it across oceans.
And the sheer inertia with all those containers. I am not surprised at all. That was A LOT of Cargo.

Honestly, wouldn't have mattered in this case. There isn't going to be a bridge sturdy enough to withstand that sort of impact. @@silentumexcubitor6747 - what I heard is that, yes, the ship radioed in to the port to warn they were having trouble, and traffic was held. Perhaps traffic was only held due to the construction, though, as that seems like little time, and construction flag men would limit traffic.
Either way, they had a bit of a warning, but left the crew on to die. Sounds like a lawsuit from the families incoming.

One of mayor Brandon Scotts initial comments were that "this looks like an action movie." Now he thinks showing the footage is insulting the families but his comments were totally fine. I think we need to keep looking at this footage closely.

I watched the first press conference with him,. I had no idea who he was... he literally made a soft statement about "keep them in your hearts" and that was it. He didnt seem bright.

CNN won't give you any relevant info, such as that the ship in question had a similar accident in 2016 where it crashed into a pier in Antwerp.
It's a gigantic 1000 ft cargo ship, gross tonnage almost 100,000, and an additional 17,000 tons fully loaded. When the bridge was built, cargo ships were more or less 1/10 the size.

they only keep showing the footage directly before the ship hits. From what i've seen, if you go back further, it looks like the ship turns towards the bridge, loses power, regains power, turns more towards the bridge, loses power again, and repeats that another 2 or 3 times.
The ship was turning towards the bridge because it had its rudder oriented at an angle for it to follow the curved path it was supposed to follow, it was intended to turn just enough to go under the bridge beneath the pylons. However because power was lost so early in the turn, the rudder was likely locked at a steeper angle, when usually it would be made increasingly gradual. So it was making its turn in the channel too quickly while the power was off. When they got the power back on (a process that put out a lot of black smoke) they put the ship in reverse, which made its bow turn to one side on account of the propellors being at the rear of the ship. Think of how your car sweves when you brake really hard. Unfortunately that made it commit even further to the turn and so orient further towards the pylon. Images of the aftermath show the port anchor had been dropped and then dragged on the bay floor, so they probably did that early in this disaster to try to lean it away from the bridge, however neither of these were successful in correcting its course and the reverse speed might have made it a little worse than if they just cut the engines. By the time it lost power again it was already too late to do anything further.

A disaster like this has happened before, the sunshine bridge collapse of 1980 where a cargo ship rammed into the supports. Whoever was in charge of this bridge has no excuse for not putting up breakers to prevent this.

I was in Pensacola, Florida back in 1989 when a ship did the same thing there, and recently there was another one in Tampa. They should be building huge dirt-filled caissons to support these things, not flimsy little erector set pylons. Kinda how people have done it since Roman times.....

There are two major oddities that need addressing in any official investigation:
1, why did the ship appear to lose power multiple times before the collision?
2, why wasn't the bridge made with any redundant/backup support structures? As soon as a single pillar was damaged, the ENTIRE bridge collapsed, including areas that should have been held up by other still-intact pillars. When the Sunshine Skyway bridge collapsed in Tampa a few decades ago, only a single portion of the bridge fell into the water, while the rest stayed up on its own until the damaged bridge could be safely demolished by trained experts.

I used to live in Maryland and drove through Baltimore regularly. The thing that struck me about it was that it's the main Hazmat route along the I-95 corridor, since all the freeways going through the city proper have tunnels and those trucks can't use them. This is going to cause a LOT more disruption than they're talking about, that fact alone makes me suspicious.

The video of the moment of impact (since deleted) CLEARLY shows the ship dog-legging hard to starboard, DIRECTLY INTO THE PIER SUPPORT!!! This was an act of economic terrorism, meant to disrupt the Port of Baltimore, and at 1:30 AM, with what they’d anticipated would be “minimal” loss of life, so as not to trigger an all-out retaliatory strike. (Not that Sloppy Joe and his fellow misfit toys could ever do so, anyway.).

As an ex Captain , It looked to me as if she was turning the minute she blacked out , Going by the AIS , This was when she was on a straight course down the channel , If anything she made a bee line for that support . These ships have an emergency generator for this very scenario , Loss of steerage that should kick in within seconds of a power out . Im finding it hard to see why she turned to starboard at that very time when the rudder should have been midships as shown by her course before the black out & Definitely not 10 degrees to the starboard ?????
There were few to know people on that bridge when it collapsed. That's why that the count is only at around six people missing or dead. If this had happened in the middle of the day, then we would see a much more drastically higher body count. The reason they don't want the video shown is because it's evidence for all of us to see that this was done deliberately. It's the same thing as with the January 6th videos. They didn't want those videos shown and took them off all forms of media because they didn't want the public to be able to see the evidence.
