- A judge ruled in favor of parents who wanted their 30-year-old so, Michael Rotondo, to move out. Rotondo tells CNN's Brooke Baldwin he would like to leave but doesn't have the means.
Of course he lost custody. He can't even take care of himself.

Yep. I was living with a friend’s mom when I was pulling myself back up after losing a job. I was still looking for a full-time job when I saved up enough money for several months’ rent and got an apartment, still on only part-time work. I was getting depressed, not “fending for myself.” I don’t get it. Some people are proud to just skate by.

What about parents who make a shrine out of their childs bedroms after they leave to get married etc. This one couple kept their kids bedrooms as they always had been kept when their now grown up men were kids. Over many many years the brownish toned rooms remained dark with dirty lace curtains on the one small window and a build up of dust smudged any defining lines. A bed and one wall bracket shelf with childhood books and a globe or world educational map remained until the end. Their bed rooms were always there just in case.

There's nothing wrong with keeping a room the way it was for when their children visit. Homeowner's prerogative. There's also nothing wrong with turning it into an office, study, laundry room, dungeon, or anything else within the legal discourse. But yes, cleaning said room from time to time would be nice to have on the agenda.

As someone who moved out from my parents house at age 22 and then had to move back home 2 yrs later when my relationship fell apart, and then stayed back home for 2 years until I was ready to move out again at 26, I understand the fear of having to stand on your own 2 feet and pay your own way in life (especially in a world that ain’t getting any cheaper any time soon), but that’s nothing compared to the awkwardness of being an adult and still living under your parents roof
The current housing market doesn't help anything.

My grandparents let me live with them for 6-7 months when I was his age. I was out of state and homeless so they bought me a ticket back home and let me get a job and save money so I could afford to move into my own apartment. I blame his parents, they created this problem.

I was 22 almost 23 when I moved out of my parent's home. I couldn't wait to get out on my own so I could live my life the way I wanted. I had a good job, I made good money and with a couple of roommates, I was able to afford it. Not that I didn't love my folks but it made me feel like an adult to live on my own. I can't understand why, if things were so tense and awkward between him and his parents that he would want to stay. They even gave him money to get started so I don't understand his reluctance to leave. Spoiled, lazy and entitled comes to mind.
In most cases its parents fault or environment fault if something wrong with human and he/she/whatever can't socialize. I am have to live with depression, paranoia, anxiety, worry, sociophobia and everything that because of my parents or environment which made fun of me. And now they except from me that i am somehow will integrate myself in this society these rules really sucks

This is so widespread that adult children stay at home much longer that my generation. I have a 27 year old stepson who did not finish college, can't hold a job and plays video games till 3am. My wife lets it happen and I stay out of it. I think he will never leave.

There are mental health challenges that are difficult to see sometimes but in this case its apparent there's something off. I immediately thought there's no way most employers would hire him except for the most basic of jobs.
While I feel bad for the parents, they only have themselves to blame because they raised him and failed to instill good values including respect, graciousness, work ethic and appreciation. When you enable someone for too long, it tends to become an expectation.
If his goal in being on the show was to garner sympathy, my guess is that it was a colossal failure.
I would have to agree. Although while he is clearly on the spectrum, one can't even blame his parents who likely didn't pick up on it and get him an IEP and then help. So of course he is now behind the 8 ball. He isn't dumb. But he obviously misses social cues (on national television.... ouch!). Rather than exploit him, as it has been so publicized, why didn't someone step in and offer assistance??? And what is worse--there are so many others out there just like him!

We all have mental issues but in the words of an early 19th century English wit: ' The poor dont have time to run mad.' Most us us truth be told are just functional. I guarantee you, the Army, Navy, USMC Air Force or CG will be delighted to give this man room, board, a pay check, he will be more physically fit than EVER in his life AND he will surely be able to pay child support and get visitation. I wonder if you folks at CNN have heard of some of the latest news? 1) We are in a pandemic that caused business shut-downs 2) The US has unemployment rates matching the great depression of the 1930s 3) Housing prices are out of control 4) There is a pre-pandemic trend which continues that young people are renting together because they can not afford to buy or rent on their own 4) Full time at minimum wage does not equal a living wage
Tens of thousands are now unable to pay for the things that were taken for granted in their parent's youth. Also, the condescension from the broadcaster shows her privilege and ignorance. No doubt at her pay level she doesn't worry about such things.
Has anybody even stopped to ask or wonder if this young man struggles with schizaphrenia? A REAL ILLNESS many painfully try to hide. He seems intelligent enough. Very sad situation. He needs a mentor and build self esteem, not people downing him From every angle. There is something more to this that meets the eye. I know people who still live with parents 40, 50s but they help with mortgage payment, repairs, upkeep. I don't see anything wrong with it if concentual and it keeps families strong and together. My 25 year old son moved back in with us after failing out of college after 7 years in school. He always had a job, but nothing great. After about a year, I had a heart to heart with him. I told him he is a man and it is time to take care of himself. He agreed. He went back to college. Long story short - years later he had become a captain in the Marine Corps serving with the Navy SEALS. He is now a director at a retirement community and is totally put together.
I am very proud of him and would feel like a failure if he had turned out like this guy.

If you're in your 30s unless you ran into financial problems or are making some type of pivot to drastically alter your life for the better (i.e. starting a business, going to school/grad school, saving for your own house) OR your parents are sick/need care and you are helping you should not be living at home. Period. If you are its the parents fault as much as it is the kid(s).
Only in America is this actually a thing. In other culture, the family sticks together. White people just love putting their kind into retirement homes.

By the time I was his age I was married with 4 kids, had already purchased a home and paid for it completely, sold that home and purchased another for 360,000.00. I worked extremely hard since I was 14 years old. Saving and working to afford my life and give my kids something wonderful. My 17 year old daughter has a part time job, goes to work, school and cheerleading practice. This guys is a bum and needs a BIG WAKE UP CALL! His life is wasting away, and his parents enable him for far too long! Time to grow up little man.

I think many, many people know of moochers like this. A 37 year old nephew mooches off his sister who is on disability allowance - and her 62 year old hubby just lays about too.. A 28 year old great nephew (well, he isn't so great) mooches off his retired 76 year old grandmother. Just so sad and pathetic.

I have no problem that he lives there either, I have a couple of 20 somethings who have moved out with partners and can manage. And then I have a couple in my house. One is waiting til he can move to England with his girlfriend and the other is Autistic. But they BOTH earn an income. One works almost full time and is saving every dime he can earn, and one only works from home part time but they each cover their own basic expenses. Times are tough and there is no way for every kid to make a living that will give them enough to pay for all of it, but they have to at least be trying. There are charities that will help with job training and placement, even for someone with disabilities. But you have to put in some effort. I'd kick this kid out too.
Is it any worse than his parents feeling entitled and bankrupting our country with there won't and needs meaning the entitlements older people get way past what they paid in over the years

I am (32) unfortunately in the same situation. But in my case, I ended in a bad situation and I was faced with a lot of hardships during my teens and as an early adult, which in my opinion were not my fault. I can go in to details, but in a nutshell:
I always struggled in school. I had a learning disablility. I barely passed high school. After that I workled my ass of to start college, since its a requirement where I live, to get a somewhat decent job. Like in school I didnt write good enough grades to get my degree - despite I worked a lot. I even changed my major three times. But nothing helped. After five years, I left coolege without a degree. I used all my savings. For nothing. The only job I could find, was as a cashier at a local fast food restaurant. I work there now. Obviously I could not live on my own during this time and the worse thing is that for all the effort I got nothing in return. The job I am working in does not simply provide enough money to find an own place. Beside that I suffer from medical conditions which make everything harder.
Unlike this man I feel dissappointed in myself and utterly sorry for my parents. They always supported me and believed in me and I achived nothing. They sill love me but you cant deny that I simply messed up. I dont know what to do. I hate myself. Why cant I just have the ressources to attend college, get a degree, find an appartment and move on?

I did not go to college, I retired at 66 from a good job. It was hard but worth the struggle. Only you know if you can let college go, find meaningful work without college OR maybe move somewhere where housing is more reasonable. I strongly urge you to get assistance with your learning disability, esp if you decide to try college again. There should be help at the college, right? and in either case, PLEASE find a good emotional therapist who can support you in making life decisions and moving forward and finding peace and being easier and kinder with yourself. Sounds to me like you've accomplished a lot, look at that with honest eyes, focus on that and appreciate yourself for the positive things you've done and not on the negative constantly. Very best to you.

I get it. My dad worked at a bakery as a teen and my grandfather (Peruvian immigrant) took some of his pay to help out with bills. Now my parents never done such, but I still joined the Marines to get out of the house and relieve them a bit. It’s weird how the way you see your parents as a kid vs adult. As a kid they’re the ones who guide you and they seem like they are always on their feet and have money all the time. But as an adult you realize that your parents are human and have a ton of bills too. Makes you more appreciative.
That was harsh my friend. There are many ways to instill discipline and financial independence than that route. However if it worked for you, cool.
l had the same kind of a mom at 18 she said its time to get married or move out. l moved out into a one room apartment with not even a bed to sleep on. As l worked two jobs l budgeted myself and saved enough money to buy wood and make a bed to sleep and a sofa to sit during the day. l later purchased fabric to sew a cover for it and the rest is history l worked very hard for everything l have. l am thankful to my mother who has now passed on, for teaching me about money and how not to waste it. To this day l am still careful with money and shop in thrift stores, flea markets and anywhere l think l can get a bargain, and l don't have to. Yet, my son will go into Wawa pay $17.00 dollars for a fancy coffee cup, after l had given him one l paid 99 cent, which he didn't like. l cannot understand what has happen to the young people today!

His mother got sick and died an year later and the son didnt even go to the funeral... what I mean is, parents need to discipline their kids but they need to understand that actions have consequences and they will get old before their kids and sometimes the reality of those parents actions may cost them dearly
