I just want you to know that I STILL model with your method, following this 15 year old video, because I like yours the best. Regular poly modeling is too time consuming and complicated, and box modeling has its limitations. I'm still intimidated by sculpting, but what you show here is the most comfortable for me. Even though I use Blender 3.0 now, this tutorial still applies to any software! Thanks a million!
I am blown away that I could not find a tutorial that was so damn to the point on the most basic and important aspects of modeling a head/face. This tutorial right here demonstrates what I've been begging the internet gods to show me. Thanks!
+Jeff Halalay Glad i could help!

I first watched this video almost four years ago when I was a student studying 3D art at University. I now work in an animation studio as an organic modeller and still come back to this tutorial when I'm modelling heads. Just wanted to say thanks!
I cant believe you just created a good edge flow head in 10 minutes here, enlightening truly! This video is six years old now and it still taught me some good stuff! =)
this is the best human face modelling tutorial i have found...the technique and process used is the best
seve years later and still one of the best head modeling tutorials.
Thanks!
OH MY GOD, it has been seven years since 2007?! Damn...
Seven years after you comment and it's still one of the best
This video tutorial was posted in 2007 (6 years ago) and remains perfect! People like you are awesome my friend!
A THOUSAND TIMES THANK YOU. You helped me in a crunch with this tutorial. I'm a newbie and this was heaven sent.
by far the best head modeling tutorial i've seen anywhere.
Dude, I'm detailing a head I modeled using this method, and I have to say, for a beginning modeler, this is the most effective method I've tried.
I just want to say that this modeling video has been an absolute blessing for me, ever since you posted it. I've kept coming back to this video to watch the steps every time I model a new character's head, even though I've learned sometimes to avoid making those extra edge loops because my models are more simplified and cartoony. The basic topology is spot on, though, and more helpful than even most priced tutorials out there. Great work!
Thank you for going over not only the steps of what you're doing, but also the fundamental reasons why you do them. Really helpful for me :) thanks a bunch - game dev student
i have watched a dozen face modeling tutorials, and i am also currently in a maya modeling class, and this is the VERY BEST face modeling tutorial i have seen. great job squirc. excellent technique.
Out of all the tutorials to create a face I have seen this is by far the best. I followed the tutorial in 3DS MAX and got a surprisingly good result. Thanks man
Probably the best, smartest and fastest way to model a face I've ever seen. I think I've seen the Light!
Thumbs up!!!
I do still do it mostly this way. I've found a few little improvements on this method, but it's still basically the same
Awesome tutorial! The pace is perfect (video and narration) and your techniques is much easier and informative than most of what I came acroos on UA-cam. Keep it up, man!
Wow!!! This is the most effective way I've seen!! Other videos try too hard to get that detail too early!! And they randomly model our planar model their topology which is hard to follow. This is great!! Thanks!
Awesome tutorial, starting with the mouth and eyes so those edge loops are already taken care of is a really good tip
Great tutorial. Thanks. I have done just about done every head modeling tutorial and this approach is very well thought out.
Excellent tutorial! This is by far the most efficient method of head modeling in Maya I've seen! With Maya 2008, previewing the subdivision on the fly will be even better! Good job!
I liked the tutorials you do so much that I signed up for lynda.com to see more - awesome! I have Maya now and am loving the tutorials. Thanks for teaching!
Wow man that was really helpful!!! Thank you so much. What a great idea to start of with the head. I have already seen a few head modelers but you seem to be the most competent.
I will definitively check your other tuts.
awesome video and method. been studying 3D modeling for a couple months and this is extremely helpful. thanks a lot!
Loved this tutorial. Even for box-modelling heads, this tutorial is really great for sense of perspective, where to put things, etc
can't thank you enough for this really good method! I've tried many techniques over the years but this one is really really good! Thanks thanks thanks!
Thanks a lot ! This is one of the best tutorials I've ever seen. Thank you very much
This is one of the best facial vids I've seen thankyou sooooo.....much..... for clear and informative construction of a face and head.I learned so much!!!!
Friggin wonderful. This was probably the most helpful video i've seen so far on the facial edge flow. Thank you!
excellent tutorial! Best I've seen on head modeling.
This really is great. Quick and incredibly helpful. Thanks for posting.
I tried out this in 3ds max, and I realized it's a really really great method!
Thank you very much!
What a fast and clean way of modeling! Kudos. I especially like the fact that you follow the shape of the muscle of the neck. A lot o students don't think about that and just extrude out the bottom faces down to create the neck. Cheers.
Thank you so much. You have no idea how much trouble you just saved me.
holy crap! i've gotta try this, creating proper edge flow with just 2 extrudes! looks like a serious time saver
Your sculptures are awesome
Wow thank you very much for helping me with my work flow, i have been having a hard time working on an animation rig because i just can't get a grip on face modeling, you have helped me quite a bit.
Thank you SO much for sharing what you know. I'm taking my first organic modeling class soon and i've been dreading it for a while, but your video has given me some hope! lol :)
Thank you so much for posting this video - I was able to watch it and apply the ideas and techniques you showed in Blender! Went from downloading Blender with no clue what to do and in about 2 days of practice trying and re trying to follow your approach, I built a head!! Didn't think it'd be so simple. Your explanation of edge flow is very easy to understand! I will be checking out all of your tutorials. :-) thanks again! Also.... your artistic pieces are amazing.
best tutorial and technique out there hands down!thank you man you're an animation god!much love from africa!
one of the best guides online
Thank you very much! This is very simple and straightforward. Now that Blender does b-splines, those 6-sided patches won't cause so much grief before they're eliminated. It's amazing how much it begins to look like him with only a few dozen polys.
Dude im SO thankful for your videos, im an absolute beginner and i actually managed to make a head, im pumped!
I have tried many different ways of modeling. I also see the practicality in starting from ground zero: you have total control.
Thanks Squirc
That was THE tutorial i was looking for!
thank you sooooo much. only tutorial that really explained how to model the head with good edge flow thx :)
Dude you are nasty. I've been looking for this kind of modeling for a while. When I saw it, a chorus played in my head. Rated five stars.
this is so amazing... u made it look so easy. Thanks a ton!!
Thanks for responding. I have been modeling for a few years then I just stopped. Now all I do are 2d illustrations. My problem always was: when I finished, textured, and rig my models, I had no more energy to animate... lol. And getting a job in this field is not very feasible for me right now. but I still love what people do!
This is the director of my major! :D I'll be talking to you next month about taking my Character Modeling Art Test!
Ryan,
I cannot thank you enough for how much you have helped me. As a Lynda user, and having found you on UA-cam I look forward to learning lots more from you. Attending animation school is not easy by any means but I get a little more confident day by day. Keep up the dedication and inspiration. Ty Ty Ty.
J.N.P.
thanks for the really great compliment. I'm so glad my videos have helped you out!
I'm an animation student and the tutorials we have for the head are almost 2 hours long and bland. This helped me get the head concept down pact, now I can make heads for kids, adults, teens, etc... Thanks soo much!
thanks for the tutorial, i followed along and its much easier then the way i was taught with extruding a plane around the eye
this is actually a good tutorial, i learned a new way to model faces, I would have started exclusively with the eyes then modeled the mouth. good tutorial, but you see i already have been modeling for a while, so i would say with the speed at witch the tutorial goes, it can only help those who know pretty much what your doing. thanks btw, i don't use maya often so this helps me.
I've been using your technique for years now. Still didn't found better way to achieve low poly head. I was able to model even dog head or skull. Simple, fast and intuitive. Even for beginners.
good modeling technique, easy to follow and very helpful.
@VartinMana thanks! six pointed stars are vertices that have 6 edges connected to them. they are bad because the more edges attach to a vert, the more weight it has over the deformation of that area. It means that that vert will have disproportionately heavy effect on that part of the model.

Exactly. I'm using c4d and it works like a charm. A good modeling technique should be independent of the modeling package you're working with. General rules always apply, no matter what the edge cutting or extruding tools are called in max, c4d, lightwave or maya. :)
Excellent tutorial, Thanks for posting this.
This tutorial is really great, thanks so much!
@JuanIII Glad the vid is helping. To deal with 6 pointed stars, try deleting all the edges around it and then re-cut across the resulting space in different ways. experiment with what works best. There's no one right answer for dealing with 6ps. Good luck!
Totally BRILLIANT!! I will never "box model" or "sphere model" a head again!
When I first start modeling Maya2010 I used your method of face modeling and it works great how ever creating the skull was hard. I ended up using a cube instead of a plain and created excellent result too.
This was really helpful dude, thanks very much for posting.
very well explained indeed .. for someone like me who's learning animation , modeling especially ... dis tutorial has been enjoyable and beneficial .... thnx once again
Brilliant straight forward tutorial thank you!
Thanks for making this tutorial. Now I can finally model faces! :)
Very useful lesson. Thank You very much!
you're my god sir...
this is the easiest way of modelling a head i've ever seen... :)
this was ridiculously helpful. thank you greatly for sharing.
Hey man thank you SO much. This video has helped me a lot
Awesome tutorial. I used the edge flow advice to create the video response. Not great, but much better than I had been doing.
this video is the best for me that i find along time
Thank you so much for this video. I always have issues with line flow so I've always tried to avoid modeling. This was super helpful :)
Excellent - this has really helped - thanks!
this is very good, thanks for that technique
Nice technic. Conceptual modeling with nice flow.
Great tutorial! Thanks a lot!
@x9T9 Glad you like it! I started out with character modeling about 10 years ago and it took months to do what I can do now in hours. Check out my full character modeling course at lynda.com if you wan't to learn in the fast lane :) the link is in this video's description
HEY! wow in 2020 is still usefull. I´m learning 3D Modelling, and this tutorial allow me to develop my references in my university homeworks, IN MAYA 2020. WOW
@MrTOKUKITA Hi, glad you like the vid. This technique will work for any human face and many animal faces as well. I agree that starting from a cube is tedious and confusing. much better to start with the proper edge flow from the begining
yeah, I came up with this method as a way to achieve the same results without the headache
Yes, it can be used in pretty much any modeler. the names of tools will be different and some programs have different tools, but the same general idea will work anywhere.
You do raise some interesting points. It is actually still very practical. There is not always an actor available to scan, or the character is non human/cartoony. Even if a clay model or actor is scanned, a lower resolution mesh with good edge flow must still be created based on the scan data, so this technique still is practical.
Great question! don't worry too much about having the exact same number of verts on edges that you're going to stitch together. You can add or subtract (I usually add) or you can use a reduction technique (the best option) to turn 3 edges into one. It's a little complicated to write about here, but if you do some research online, I'm sure that you can find out about it.
you make it seem so easy ^^
Glad I could help.
And thanks for these tutorials. The hand tutorial was especially helpful (turns out I've been doing thumbs wrong for the last 2 years :P)
@EbonyShadow07 You're welcome! I'm so glad that it helped you!
Thanks a lot. This tutorial was really helpful for me^^
Great video keep up the good work.
never found any other tutorials better than this!!
thanks!
Thnx for sharing! This helped me alot!
Awesome tutorial
thanks for the nice comments! good luck with modeling!
Nice tutorial man.
omg! that is what im looking for! tkx dude!!!
Envy. Very cool tutorial
Hi Hadesdcc, glad my tuts helped! I was using version 7.5 when I did the tuts. now I use 2009. I haven't used the trial version, so I don't know if the tool is missing in it. you might also try clicking on an edge and ctrl-right click, then go to the "edge ring tools" marking menu, and then click "split edge ring" when it pops up. hope this helps!
I really like this method, I'll try it out in 3ds max.
