Naas het 7 Curriebeker-eindstryde vir Noord-Transvaal gewen. In die 7 eindstryde het hy in totaal 100 punte aangeteken. Dit is 'n rekord wat nooit verbeter sal word nie!
Thanks for posting. We were in same grades in school. He was the best in the world but because of apartheid, the world hardly noticed. He was the one individual that caused the world rugby rules to change (through doc Craven). He caused the try (3) points to be increased to 5. All for the sake of motivating running rugby. For all of his opponents, he was the most hated player out there because they always lost, but for us the Blue Bulls fans, forever the darling. A points machine like no other. Since today his skills were unmatched. Long live the legend Naas Botha. Remember those were the days of amateur rugby and no money involved until Naas stirred the bureaucracy by signing a contract aboard. The SA rugby union wanted to crucify or ban him, because they knew that it would create a president. It did and the rest is all history. Naas jou doring ons bly trots op jou. Ters.
This man was a drop machine...really miss those type of flyhalves in todays game...was amazing to see Elton Jantjies do it to the AB's in their 31-29 victory by the Boks!
Don't understand why teams don't go for them these days - probably to do with being seen to be playing 'entertaining' Rugby (even though people obviously love it!!) Nobody questions sides kicking over 7 penalties in a game so why not Drop goals? The drop goal is by far the more difficult of the two.
Such a shame that SA doesn't utilize this more in our game, so often were unable to capitalize on possession in the opposition half and this would be an amazing counter to that, Rassie and Nienaber should add this to their gameplan just like they did the box kicking, if after 3 or 4 phases it's evident we're not getting anywhere take the three points via a droppie and break the opposition that we, we clearly have the talent.
I will never understand the thing with modern crowds jeering when a drop goal is taken. It is a beautiful part of the game, displaying skill, presence of mind, vision and composure.
I forgot just incredible he was. Plenty of criticism at the time saying it was boring/predictable but that's cause it was such an easy win for the BB. Naas was just ridiculous with the skep skops.
Barry John was the same apparently in one Cardiff victory against Llanelli he kicked four and an old man came on the pitch after the match and beat him with his walking stick! Beating us with drop goals!!

Not only very productive (15 points) but the danger of trying to block those drop goals is that the side would have been penalised for offside and 3 points would have been scored from penalties instead.
That was the most tiresome game of rugby ever played, why have 15 players on a team,? may as well have 10 and then have a propper yawnathon. Its an embarrassment znd a disgrace.
@@markbrown-sb2zm Just like Janie de Beer - it won a really important game. The history books will only ever remember the score, not the style of rugby played.
By 1992 Northern Transvaal weren't as strong as they were in the late 70's - early 80's. It seemed to be a definite tactic to go for a drop goal if they had a lineout in the opposition 22.
@@woefelrebirth2176 Nothing negative about the comment. True of all great sporting teams - Australian and West Indies cricket teams, Brazilian football team etc. Look at the players who played for Northern Transvaal then compared to early 90's - the team was obviously not as good.
@@mangashu911gt Nobody questions a team for kicking 5 penalties in a game - it happens very frequently. Why teams don't do this today astounds me. If a team has given away a penalty but is too far out to kick then why not go for a drop the next phase or two? Perhaps teams wont give away penalties so much!
Sean Fitzpatrick introduced himself to Naas later that year by slapping him on the head "don't be trying any drop kicks today fella or we'll bury you in front of your people" lol
SA needs to change its style of play in future the game will open up for drop goals and running rugby. We scored extremely low this world cup against the top teams like NZ. Actually we need to learn from teams like Portugal who run and tackle. A Naas Botha would be awesome in our side. The drop goal flyhalf also forces the oposing team to run up to the player where a perfect dummy oportunity is presented keep the teams guessing.
@@RealRugby thanks. Interesting. Just before the switch in powers! I miss the old jerseys and provincial names. Do you have old Transvaal footage? Like before 1990? Then I will subscribe
@@contrarian717 I do mostly features on players and not really on teams, but you will definitely see footage of Transvaal from the 80's if you go down our timeline of videos
Una David he would have been half the player if he was expected to be a tackling machine. His genius didn't lie in defence and he won games on his feet, not off it
A sure tell that someone has a very limited knowledge of the game is when he/she says "All that Naas could do was kick. He was scared to tackle ". Seriously, pick another topic because you know nothing about rugby.
He could kick, dropkick, off-load, run, dummy and tackle. His problem though was that towards the end of his career his shoulder's were badly damaged and he couldn't risk tackling like he did when he was younger. He was such a target for the opposition and took some huge late/dangerous tackles and shoulder charges (including by his friend) Morne Du Plessis. His shoulders and ribs took a battering - he was tougher than most people think. His distribution of the ball was also brilliant - he gave some great ball to Gerber, C. Du Plessis etc. Don't judge his tackling based on his last few seasons - where he still won games!
Look at the video on youtube which reviews his career - you'll be surprised how versatile he was. If he had gone on to play 100 tests he would surely be right up there with Dan Carter as one of the most prolific scorers in test rugby history.
take his kicking away...he is below average rugby player.....i laugh when he speaks so much about how to play the game when he never really did....except getting mowed down by morne duplesis
Absolute Legend!!
Pure class all the way...I feel privaleged to have been able to enjoy his career during the late 70s and 80s.
Two knock ons in last drop. Naas was unbelievable

Best rugby fly half of all time!!!!!
Doesn't get any better awesome
Yes, he was an excellent kicker. But I still hates him and his kind of rugby.
this isnt a dan carter video
Who could not tackle
Yes, just ask his outside backs who only ever got to tackle
He kicked those drop goals so effortlessly...
that last one was a beauty !

Absolutely brilliant!
Naas Botha one the best no 10 s ever he was a great player 😊🏉
Best kicking flyhalf of all time
I saw Botha when he was a player of Rovigo in Italy. He was incredible with his defense kikcs in 22m zone.
15 points can really turn a game around.
Brilliant ,drop goal lessons , note on most ,a steadying for balance then 3 steps and fourth he kicks all in a tight motion
Obviously the man was a genius.
I believe it was this match he actually attempted 7 drop goals in the game!
When a try only scored 4 points. Also this was before knock ons were so strictly enforced.
In effect Naas scored the equivalent of 3 tries (in todays scoring system) that day all risk free.
I forgot just incredible he was. Plenty of criticism at the time saying it was boring/predictable but that's cause it was such an easy win for the BB. Naas was just ridiculous with the skep skops.
Ek wonder betykeer of Naas in vaandag se rugby net so goed sou kon doen, maar na hierdie video is ek seker daarvan!
Watter taal praat jy?

This is better than Jannie De Beer vs England. Naas used the old ball and most of the kicks were more difficult.

2:40 clear knockon
I would say he was the best fly halve ever and second to him maybe Johny Wilkinson. They both could kick with both feet like no one.

They should just make the drop goal one point.
In Rugby League the Drop is worth 1 point and ironically you see more drop goals there than in Union these days.
