Hello, Bro Joe Elliott....I have a nugget. Pastor K. Bond, here. Been wanting to tell this story for years. So, here it goes. I used to do workshops back in the day. Traveled around the world in the Air Force and would come back to Indy to do choir workshops at my Dad's church. In one of the workshops, Joe 'C' Elliott and some of his friends joined in. The group included none other than the incomparable Aaron 'Stix' Smith. Joe had come in with his trumpet, ready to do his thing on his instrument. Well, I had chosen John P. Kee's 'Rain On Us' as one of our songs to learn/sing. This is one of the baddest Gospel choir songs out there, and the drum solo is off-the-charts. Check it out, if you haven't heard it. If you love Gospel, you'd have to have lived under a rock to not have heard and know this song. Anyway....we get to picking who was going to do the drum solo. I jump on the Hammond B3, and we have at it....competition-style. Aaron was first up....He was young...not yet the drummer that he is today....Even still, as a young kid, HE WAS A BAD BOY! Stix did his thing....I knew the choice was going to be tough. Then, Joe C. put his trumpet down and got on our broken down church kit. Dude. Joe killed it, mane! He killed it! I knew I was about to hurt my fam's feelings, and I wanted to protect him so that his future would still be bright. So, as softly as I could, I let Bro Joe know that he had the solo. I could tell that Stix was devastated. I think his non-selection fueled him to be the drummer he is today. It was a really hard choice, but that day, I think we all witnessed the future GREATNESS of both of these young men that was to come. You remember that, Joe? I know you do. Now, look at both of y'all. KILLING THE DRUM GAME! BOTH OF YOU ALL! Years later, while stationed in Washington D.C., another young kid walks into our Praise Team's rehearsal. As fate would have it, our drummer was missing this night. Kid walked in with his stick bag and his snare. I look at him and say 'can you play?' He looks at me and gives me a 'Negro-please' look! I motion for him to get on the kit. Four hours later, we're walking out of rehearsal, and I'm calling the drummer to let him know he's been replaced. This kid, on Sunday mornings, would play the kit in such a way that I wouldn't even play keys on some songs....Just the kit and the PT. His name? None other than the incomparable Geremy Wimbush. Now, I'm not one to brag and dust my shoulders off, but I've been witness to the greatness of three of the BADDEST DRUMMERS IN THE GAME! As a pastor, now, I watch these young men from afar and just shake my head. LOVE WHAT YOU ARE DOING JOE, AARON, AND GEREMY. KEEP GOING!! So proud of you all, and I'm NOT SURPRISED BY YOUR SUCCESS! I FEEL A REUNION COMING SOON. (: Pastor K. Bond
