don't just read the books as you read them also write down what you learn. and don't just copy from the book but read and put in your own words that will make it easier for you to remember and learn. Also make lessons for yourself and put everything you struggle with more then the rest in one group and study and relearn them till you the full hang of it. I do know if it will help you but it might
@@GolemOfMagicthanks for the tips. That’s what I’ve been doing, but my memory is trash so it takes me some time. Making pretty good progress though and this video helped a ton 👍🏻
@@StarJesse13 im glad to hear that i also have a bad memory so it has taken me time to learn some as well. I try to do as much open exposed learning that i can and then do study lessons usually in the morning and at night and i tend to remember more easily. Im sorry if i am saying too much or what not or if i sound rude in any way i just am trying to be helpful.. But i am glad you have improved and still working on it.
I recently got into kpop and was quite proud of "teaching myself" to read hangul by staring at an alphabet chart for half an hour, but reading along to lyrics/subtitles/etc really confused me with the top vs bottom consonants. This was super clear and I have a MUCH better understanding now, none of the other videos i've seen have spelled out the names of the characters (which is such an easy way to understand how they work??? why doesn't anyone else explain that lmao) thank you so much!!
At 2:43, the 20 seconds of black screen is actually supposed to be video footage of me pronouncing the letter, but I guess it corrupted. It kept on going corrupt during editing, and I thought I fixed it, and I was sure I did, but I guess I didn't watch the final video hard enough. 18:12 - This 육월 example is wrong LOL. I found out it's actually spelled 유월 (yoowol), just like how it would sound like.
I have been learning Korean for nearly a year and still struggled to understand and learn hangul but after watching this video I can confidently say I was able to read a few subtitles from a kdrama for the first time thank you
BY THE WAY, in Japanese there is a circle voicing mark, so there are actually some circles in Japanese, but they will almost always be on the top right of the character
Yes, in Japanese we also use ○ to indicate a correct mark like how English uses a tick, and a 。for a full stop. All this aside I think the scripts look all very different. Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Korean look completely different even though I only speak Japanese and English I don’t think it hard to tell them apart.
was attempting to learn korean by myself cause I just got into kpop and have finally come across those videos without english subtitles, and while I was writing things out for practice the top/bottom consonant things and this video helped me out a TON!! It's so much easier to understand, so thanks for that!
I've been trying to learn hangeul and I haven't really paid attention to the characters' names but I realized through this video that they actually give you a clue in terms of pronunciation. Not even one of the tutorials I have watched before mentioned that. I really thought that's just how you call them. thanks so much!
It really surprises me that more apps don’t go in depth about top and bottom sounds, both eggbun and duolingo use them but they don’t give you proper context about why the sound has changed suddenly 😭
I've been really wanting to learn this language but I've never been good at concentration and memorization so i was scared to even begin, but the way you put everything made it really easy to start memorizing and using in daily activities, thank you so much!

This is two years old and super underwatched for probably the best Hangul breakdown I’ve seen. I keep restarting my Korean learning and I legitimately don’t think I’ve ever gotten bottom consonants in one of these. I think it just doesn’t come up in any of the other “be able read Korean in 30 minutes” videos and gets reserved as a “you’ll learn about those when you get to advanced vocabulary” types of things
I was trying to learn Korean on duolingo and kept getting confused with the consonants having different sounds (top/bottom) so I knew I had to do more research through youtube for a good explanation and I stumbled upon youre video. Now I finally get it, tysm!

My husband and I are about to start learning Korean so this is super helpful. He is 1/4 Korean and lived there until he was 5 but when his family moved to the states, he lost most of his Korean language. He knows a few words now but not many. I’ve wanted to learn Korean since I first met his mom and I would love to teach our kids so they can surprise Grandma with it. ❤
this video explained more than some korean courses in just 20 min, thanks man and it made things a lot easier and not scary...hope there's a video where you explain sound change rules because others also made that complicated..
This is one of the best videos to understand Hangul so far! It was so easy to understand and your methodology is spot on. I started to learn Korean a few weeks ago and you clarified most of the questions I had with top & bottom sounds. Thanks for this amazing video!
"let's be honest, ka and ga sound similar, but ka and gga sound different" ? No this is surprising to me. Ka and gga are the most "popped". Ka > gga > ga. From aspirated, to tenuis, to voiced. Same with the ta/dda/da. I had to look up the terminology a bit, but I know the mouth and breath concepts behind it. Gga and dda seem very much halfway in between. The voiced+unvoiced are the most separated to my ears (and mouth) so ka ga very distinct, ta da, same. Dunno, interesting/confusing. Maybe the English letters are throwing me. I suppose when you pronounced da it was pretty aspirated not voiced.
A lot of people have told me in the comments that apparently this is one of the very few videos that explain bottom consonants. I’m really surprised that other videos don’t, because bottom consonants are extremely common in Korean and you absolutely need to know them to read Korean. *P.S: I understand the video might go a bit fast for those who don't know Korean at all. If you think the video goes too fast, go to Settings and slow the speed down. I recorded this video in my regular talking speed because any slower would've been too slow for my liking. Yeah, others seem to focus on just the top consonant pronunciations using English mnemonics like the ones at 21:33 to make sound associations. I'll admit that those mnemonics did help me remember the sounds quickly, but I was kind of left confused about why bottom consonants were often pronounced differently. Now I know I've basically been missing half the story. I think your video is a bit detailed for absolute beginners, but for me, having learned pretty much the entire Korean alphabet except bottom consonants before watching, I think it was a good step--one that filled the gaps--in my learning progression, and, in the long run, the comprehensiveness of it is probably best.
This is very accurate, I attempted to learn to read hangul during covid for fun, and every video I watched seemed to gloss over the W vowels, double consonants, and double bottom consents, and vowel assimilation. I think your video was great for a refresher as I was already familiar being able to read and write with no issues, but looking back at when I was first learning recognizing characters and sounds, it may be a bit too fast for beginners, as it doesn't quite allow time for the info to sink in. But its great as a refresher or crash course for sure.
I can only agree. After watching several similar videos and trying to learn from a book, I finally got some insightful really helpful explanations here... Thank you very much!
Omg typing them out like that and clearly explaining positioning sounds finally made it click in place for me, I wish anyone else had done that. I only found out by accident that there were pronunciation changes at all, Duolingo doesn't make that clear TT You're a lifesaver!
I don’t normally advocate Duolingo for anything except maybe expanding basic vocabulary repetition practice, but I found it has a separate area in learning Korean where you can learn the alphabet in small batches. It does combine both romanized and normal Hangul for matching practice, plus writing practice with indicated stroke order. Definitely not something to do on its own, but its free and works for me for phone on the go alphabet refreshers as a learning supplement.
i really appreciate it , i did not knew that there is top sound and the bottom , i was like why its sound different from what it really is but now i just got it in 20 minutes . really thank you you can not imagine how did i feel when i read computer correctly , really thank you for all these content
I came here from the Duolingo video (which was recommended) just because I really like how Korean sounds, specially when you're spelling it. I've never really felt like learning Korean, even tho I've had a kpop phase a few years ago, but that video might have changed that! And it also made me want to go watch a few more kdramas loll
Just found this out today(2yrs late) … but this is exactly what I was looking for, after learning korean consonants and vowels I needed more insight on pronunciation and word structure… I’m glad I found this😭
Omg I can't tell you how mind blowing this video has been for me! I've been studying korean/hangeul for sometime now and decided recently that for my learning style, I needed to be able to read hangeul well in order to learn more vocabulary. I was honestly struggling but this video has cleared up so many things for me. Your Awesome. 😊 Stay motivated my friend. 화이팅 감사합니다!
I have been struggling with Korean pronunciation for a while. But no one has explained the top and bottom sound quite like you have. It's been a journey. Thanks for the clear explanation.
Thank you sm?! This just made learning korean so much easier! I think I’ll actually get the hang of this so quick, because while I was watching the video, I was understanding so fast and started answering that words before you said them. Including the pronunciation. This is the best video ever. Again, thank you!
You are the first Ive heard to mention sounds "on top" or "on bottom" and that just made so many things easier omg. I also see the connection woth the names and their sounds as well, many thanks!
Omg. This is the first time I’ve heard the shift in pronunciation explained as a top and bottom differentiator and while that may not seem huge, it clicks so much easier for me. Thank you!
Just within the first TWO MINUTES you are more helpful than any other beginner video. I would get so confused with the "giyeok" letter. Wondering why it sometimes sounds more like g, sometimes more like k in different words with no explanation. Now I have an explanation!
I just wanted to comment because I watched this video of yours 4 years ago and I REALLY did learn to read Korean in just a few minutes. I was always interested in the language so I decided to watch your video for fun and to this day I enjoy reading Korean. All thanks to you!!
I remember watching this video like two weeks ago and since then it has blown up! my blessings to people learning Korean, study hard 😊

I never comment on any UA-cam videos but your video is so well explained that I really want the algorithm and the people who get to this video to know that this is super high-quality content and that I did learn from all you said. Thank you
for the more "l" like ㄹ, it helps to almost roll it the way one would roll their r's, except with the tongue touching the roof of the mouth. it creates the more r-like sound (and it could be how it's actually pronounced in Korean. It also makes the vowels sound better, because pronouncing the l's that way alters the vowel).
OMG, I can't thank you enough for making this video. I went from looking at my notes every three seconds to read hangul to being able to ready more fluently.
Using the name of the consonant to remember the beginning and ending sounds is a great hack! I’m sure it was designed that way, but I’ve never seen it explained till now!
So that was fast! 😂 It served as a review for me. I liked how you gave the names of the letters. I had discovered them after a teacher was trying to spell out words for me to write. I loved the pattern that all the names start and end with the character they are naming. King Soejung and his scholars were pretty genius!😮 😊
I've been learning hangul for some time now because there were some consonants that I just couldn't understand but with this video is the best I've seen. Thanks so much!!
im seriously shocked, ive watched SO many videos on hangul and always wondered why tf ㅅ is pronounced as a t sometimes!!! this broke it down for me and cleared up so much confusion and i’m so thankful u gave a good way to remember it by spelling it out. u da best fr 🙏🙌🙌🙌
this has really helped so much. i have been trying to learn korean on duolingo but i was so confused this a lot of the rules like the bottom and top letters because it never explained it to me but now it makes so much sense
this was so helpful in terms of top/bottom consonants and although I'm not fond of romanisation of the consonants since they tend to vary a lot between sources, the audio in this video definitely helped me distinguish which consonants are aspirated and voiced. for example if we use ㄷ, ㄸ is a voiced ㄷ, while ㅌ is aspirated I believe. very helpful as it's easy for English speakers like me to confuse these
i wanted to say I just saw it to day in 2023. and it was awesome, thank you so much for making this, I am still learning korean, and this is the first video to ever mention their names actually were clues on how to pronounce them depending on the position.
It seems to me that understanding the concept of voiced vs. unvoiced sounds would be very helpful in learning Korean/hangul. Most of the pairs are a voiced/unvoiced pair (g/k, d/t, b/p), the voiced consonants turn into their unvoiced counterparts when they’re bottom consonants, and most of the pronunciation exceptions seem to actually be instances of devoicing unvoiced sounds for better flow.
This would be very helpful. You also need to keep in mind that Korean actually has trios- there is voiced, unvoiced aspirated and unvoiced unaspirated. It's hard to pronounce and hear the differences for English speakers but it gets better with repeated and regular exposure
I’ve been learning Korean on Duolingo for weeks, and they didn’t explain anything about the the location of the letter changing its sound! I was getting so frustrated and couldn’t understand why the sound was different in some cases. I’m so glad your video popped up on my feed!
hi! i'm new in learning korean. currently I'm still searching videos on how beginner can learn the language and fortunately I found your video. thankyou for your clear explanation. your video really helps me to distinguish each letter and how to pronounce them properly. not many videos tell us specifically like how you did. hopefully to see more videos of learning Korean language from you. :)
Huh, seems like I'm not the only one to get recommended to your videos in the last few days! I taught myself how to read 한글 probably 8 or 9 years ago by using a flash game, but only recently sat down to actually start learning the Korean language seriously. I've been using TTMIK and Duolingo in conjunction, and I think it's going well, though I am definitely still a beginner. Having learned to read 한글 the way I did, I have been a little unsure if I had the details of how it worked exactly right, and this helped me clear a few things up. Specifically, I can better hear the differences between some of the doubled consonants, and, as embarrassing as it is to say, I didn't know *for sure* how the bottom consonants exactly worked. I just kind of got a feel for how they sounded and should be pronounced by listening to the language a lot while reading along to things like subtitles and lyrics. Having that little bit more confidence that I'm reading correctly will be wonderful going forward. So yeah, just wanted to drop a thanks for this detailed breakdown!
I've watched this because i'm currently learning korean on duolingo. I want to learn it because i'm a big fan of korean food and Twice, so i loved it, that you included them in your video!
Honestly, leaving a long comment here is totally unnecessary, as it can all be summened up in a single sentence. This is by far the best video I've seen regarding hangul.
This video was so good at explaining how to read the words and sound them out I never truly knew the consonants has names and by now knowing their names this made it so much easier!! No truly cause saying the names literally tells you how to sound out/say the consonant. Thank you so much! Now I’m gonna practice writing some words out and trying to say them right
Thx so much for this video. I tried with other videos but some of them were very long with to many parts. A took a time because i was busy wit other things and this videos was very easy to understand and refresh my mind again. Maybe if you are new you need to rewacth 2 times or slow down the video.
3:25 - THIS I have watched soooo many videos where koreans explained the sound of it. Like if its at the beginning it sounds like L and at the end like r but honestly, when someone pronounced words i have always heard a mix of both and always thought my hearing was just bad af😂 also that he explained bottom consonants was soooo helpful bc i always wondered how to pronounce it right omg i need to share this video to every korean learner i know
This helped me so much since I’m just starting to learn Korean. I didn’t understand while I was learning on duolingo why 삿 had a t sound in it, but watching this helped me realize why. Literally so thankful for this video because otherwise I would still be struggling 😭
This is a GREAT tutorial video on how to understand the Korean alphabet and word structure. Thank you very much! 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Do you have other Korean tutorial videos like this?
😮 this is amazing! I’ve been teaching myself Korean along with other languages. I know bits a pieces but I struggled with reading this helped out a lot.
Wow. Seriously, I’m 2 levels through Duo Lingo, and I felt like I was getting most things. The vowels felt natural once I understood writing as it relates to the sounds but DL never explained the top and bottom consonant sound and I never understood why certain things I’d expect to sound one way just didn’t. They basically jumped right from characters to sounds without explaining the alphabet. At least for an English speaker, why do they do that?! This is so amazing. Fast but super informative and digestible. Thanks!

It does combine both romanized and normal Hangul for matching practice, plus writing practice with indicated stroke order. Definitely not something to do on its own, but its free and works for me for phone on the go alphabet refreshers as a learning supplement.
i really appreciate it , i did not knew that there is top sound and the bottom , i was like why its sound different from what it really is but now i just got it in 20 minutes . really thank you
you can not imagine how did i feel when i read computer correctly , really thank you for all these content
I came here from the Duolingo video (which was recommended) just because I really like how Korean sounds, specially when you're spelling it. I've never really felt like learning Korean, even tho I've had a kpop phase a few years ago, but that video might have changed that! And it also made me want to go watch a few more kdramas loll
this is literally the best video out of all 20 I have seen. thanks, man!
화이팅 감사합니다!
I absolutely loved this video. I just decided to learn Korean to broaden my general worldview and this gave me a fantastic place to start
I also see the connection woth the names and their sounds as well, many thanks!
this helped so much dude, i didn't even know that there were dual pronunciations for the consonants until i watched this
Omg. This is the first time I’ve heard the shift in pronunciation explained as a top and bottom differentiator and while that may not seem huge, it clicks so much easier for me. Thank you!
Thanks for differentiating between the top and bottom pronunciation
being able to write, read and sometimes understand korean is such a flex even though it is such an easy alphabet to learn! i love it
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEO! i started to learn korean through duolingo and i got confused a LOT. THIS REALLY HELPS
Just within the first TWO MINUTES you are more helpful than any other beginner video. I would get so confused with the "giyeok" letter. Wondering why it sometimes sounds more like g, sometimes more like k in different words with no explanation. Now I have an explanation!
I know I'm 2 years late to the vid but it was super helpful and informative. Thanks for making such a detailed and well explained video.
I just wanted to comment because I watched this video of yours 4 years ago and I REALLY did learn to read Korean in just a few minutes. I was always interested in the language so I decided to watch your video for fun and to this day I enjoy reading Korean. All thanks to you!!
As a Korean, I feel proud that others are learning Korean.
I love learning Korean. It is such a rich and beautiful language from a beautiful culture
@@leehouten2345so fun too
Bro said "rich" to a language 😭😭😭@@leehouten2345
I love your culture!!
I love korea and its culture
This is honestly the best ultimate basic guide to learn Korean.
This actually helped me a lot, all I need is to understand what I'm reading 🤣🤣
Thank you! I was always confused on the 2 consonant at the top and the bottom 😭
This is this first time I've seen top and bottom consonant sounds explained so clearly and easily. Thank you!
Love this !! I was struggling with Duolingo because it taught me the words but not really how to read it and this video really helped
SAME! I sort of just played everything by ear and spammed the audio button for pronounciations
on duolingo u can learn what hes teaching lmfao(its free). u just dont know how to use duolingo.
@@cupidzlvr nah duolingo is going after my family now after I skipped Korean lesson
@@chhkknggts they took my tv.
If you learn the alphabet first, it's not really that bad
im seriously shocked, ive watched SO many videos on hangul and always wondered why tf ㅅ is pronounced as a t sometimes!!! this broke it down for me and cleared up so much confusion and i’m so thankful u gave a good way to remember it by spelling it out. u da best fr 🙏🙌🙌🙌
Tell me why in the hell I whipped out a notebook and pen as if I was taking notes in class
same heree
this has really helped so much. i have been trying to learn korean on duolingo but i was so confused this a lot of the rules like the bottom and top letters because it never explained it to me but now it makes so much sense
this was so helpful in terms of top/bottom consonants and although I'm not fond of romanisation of the consonants since they tend to vary a lot between sources, the audio in this video definitely helped me distinguish which consonants are aspirated and voiced. for example if we use ㄷ, ㄸ is a voiced ㄷ, while ㅌ is aspirated I believe. very helpful as it's easy for English speakers like me to confuse these
this gotta be the most detailed and specific well explained korean video i’ve ever watched this helped me so much
you explained bottom consonants so well and fairly quickly compared to some videos i've seen, you're a great teacher!
i wanted to say I just saw it to day in 2023. and it was awesome, thank you so much for making this, I am still learning korean, and this is the first video to ever mention their names actually were clues on how to pronounce them depending on the position.
It's hard to pronounce and hear the differences for English speakers but it gets better with repeated and regular exposure
the tip for learning the consonant sounds with the top and bottom was so helpful
Bro you made korean so much easier than I thought it could ever be 💜
I’ve been learning Korean on Duolingo for weeks, and they didn’t explain anything about the the location of the letter changing its sound!
I was getting so frustrated and couldn’t understand why the sound was different in some cases.
I’m so glad your video popped up on my feed!
same!
hi! i'm new in learning korean. currently I'm still searching videos on how beginner can learn the language and fortunately I found your video. thankyou for your clear explanation. your video really helps me to distinguish each letter and how to pronounce them properly. not many videos tell us specifically like how you did. hopefully to see more videos of learning Korean language from you. :)
True 💜❤
You blew my mind at 2:10. No one had ever explained it that way before!
Please make more of such videos so that we could learn Korean efficiently
Thank you. It was not too long. Fast, but not too long. I learned a few new things. I've been learning Korean for less than a week and I enjoyed this.
Okay but why is this gem hidden? ???????
IKR !!💜
Honestly, leaving a long comment here is totally unnecessary, as it can all be summened up in a single sentence. This is by far the best video I've seen regarding hangul.
I tought myself 헌굴 in 10 minutes and I found it quite easy to read Korean!
that is so cute 한글 💟☺☺

And it was my first word too😁
✨한글✨
This keeps me motivated😁
I love this cos other tutorials don't tell you this, all they tell you is how to pronounce the letter itself.
This video was so good at explaining how to read the words and sound them out I never truly knew the consonants has names and by now knowing their names this made it so much easier!! No truly cause saying the names literally tells you how to sound out/say the consonant.
Thank you so much! Now I’m gonna practice writing some words out and trying to say them right
Loved this video. I am Hooked on Korean Movies and though I don’t like to read subtitles, I just want to learn it. Here’s hoping.
Thank you so much!😭
I wanted to learn Korean for so long now.you have a new subscriber bro.🤩
Thx so much for this video. I tried with other videos but some of them were very long with to many parts. A took a time because i was busy wit other things and this videos was very easy to understand and refresh my mind again. Maybe if you are new you need to rewacth 2 times or slow down the video.
This was brilliant! The cadence and detail is amazing!!!! Great Job

I have watched soooo many videos where koreans explained the sound of it. Like if its at the beginning it sounds like L and at the end like r but honestly, when someone pronounced words i have always heard a mix of both and always thought my hearing was just bad af😂 also that he explained bottom consonants was soooo helpful bc i always wondered how to pronounce it right omg i need to share this video to every korean learner i know
😂😂😂😂
I’ve been studying Korean for 2 months now and this helped me to the MAX
this was the first video that ever mentioned that some consonants have different sounds for top and bottom
This helped me so much since I’m just starting to learn Korean. I didn’t understand while I was learning on duolingo why 삿 had a t sound in it, but watching this helped me realize why. Literally so thankful for this video because otherwise I would still be struggling 😭
omg yes please keep making how to's for Korean I learned so much and you simplify it really well
You have the best explanation i have heard on the Korean and you have know idea how thankful I am , really.

i have no experience in learning korean and just randomly watching this i learnt a few things , this really helped
Thanks!
