In 17th of November 1993, Greece faces Russia and needs a win to qualify for the upcoming World Cup of the USA. Nickos Machlas, the 20 year old striker scores with a header and leads Greece for the first time of its history in a World Cup. OAKA stadium literally burned into the flames by the Greek fans.

I remember that match, I was watching it live on Russian TV, one of the unforgettable football memories of my 37 years of watching football, the ways Greek celebrated the goal that qualified them to World Cup. Russians were in schock long after the match by the atmosphere in the Athens stadium!

In fact both Greece and Russia were already qualified at the time. This match was only to determine the group winner. As Greece and Russia were way ahead of the other teams, they did manage to qualify at around June 1993.

I love the Greek passion, no fireworks anymore, no passion in football anymore.
I really wanted Greece to do well in that 1994 World Cup, sadly they had a horrendous tournament. Lost every one of their games. A complete flop, a whitewash.
I think it may have the the fact that their quslyfing group was one of the weakest and easier in zeurope that time. This did not help.
The reason why they did so badly in USA 94 was because Yugoslavia was expelled from their group. Otherwise they would have done as well as Euro 80 in Italy, as they had the same coach for both tournaments (Alketas Panagoulias).
@@hughiemacdonald148 They were bad in the tournament. A complete collapse of stage fright.
Had nothing to do with the qualifying group. Greece didnt manage to prepare properly and had the bad luck of playing in what was probably the most difficult group of the whole 1994 tournament.
@mskidi I think it had everything to do with their qualifying group. Why is that? Greece have rarely qualified for international football tournaments up until then, and their lack of tournament experience showed. All of those little things count. Big match management is huge. Greece got stuffed 4-0 by England in a friendly before the tournament in America, you might think, sure it's only a friendly, by a hammering like that is not good. I knew then, sadly that Greece would have a short World Cup. I was right sadly. Remember, Russia were in the same qualifying group, and they had a bad World Cup, too.
You are correct, though, that they were in a very tough World Cup group in America. That is true.
@@michealkelliher8428 England was a tough match up for Greece back then, especially in their own turf. We werent used at that pace, combined with the physicality. Plus the English played with a chip on their shoulder to prove they belonged in the WC. As for the rest, Greece's first game was vs Argentina and we conceded a goal in min no 3 on a counter attack! Even the worst team that ever took part in a world cup, in their first game ever, vs one of the historical behemoths of world football, would have instictively come out to play more cautiously than that. The team was completely out of sync, the training camp was poor and undisciplined, the scouting was ridiculous and the head coach had some extremely ''original'' ideas about the set up, even though he knew the players and the team inside out. For example, he placed 33 year old Saravakos on an island at the right wing...as if this was 1989, made him look like an ex player. Couple of months later, Saravakos demolished Rangers (Brian Laudrupp etc) in the CL qualifying round, as a second striker with AEK. Lack of experience played a major role, but the whole ordeal was extremely unfortunate.
