Whenever Daryl cries it hits me hard...
I think Merle's line "Your people look at me like I'm the devil" says a lot. It's that thing where when other people (like his parents) tell you you'll never amount to anything & always assume the worst. You lose the strength to try and be better, prove that you aren't a bad person so quickly. When you're labeled a "bad seed" from the jump, people develop the mindset of "people have decided I'm a villain, then fine, I'll be a villain". I think that's exactly what happened to Merle.
Merle had a good arc on this show. From his abhorrent words to T dog on season 1 episode 3 to letting Michonne go and him trying to take the governor group for the survivors.
I agree! I can’t say he deserved more… but then again who deserves to die that way?… it’s tough stuff
When Merle describes what The Governor would do in retaliation or the torture he would ensue on his enemies is chilling. It means he's seen horrifying things from this man. Everything he shows to Andrea and the civilians in the community is a mask. How can anyone think he has any type of goodness left in him when a man like Merle is scared of him?

This is my favourite episode of this season.
Merle's last words, "I ain't gonna beg! I ain't begging you!" If you remember, call back to the opening of 1x3. When he was alone on the roof, he said "I never begged you before! I ain't gonna start begging you now!" (referring to God).
And a fun fact: His final moments were changed to have him get beaten up by the Governor's men before actually fighting the Governor. Because Michael Rooker (Merle) didn't believe Philip could beat Merle in a fair fight. And the director, of course... Agreed.
But regardless, I'm SUPER stoked for the next episode...
I think the Ricktatorship served its purpose at a time when the group was scared and weak and unorganized. They weren't in a place to make decisions at the end of S2. But it's run its course now. The group is strong individually and together; they're ready to be a successful democracy. Everyone is seasoned now.

I feel like Carol might have thought of herself as being more throughout her life but Merle always "knew" he was just "trash" & never second-guessed it. It's sad but I feel like you can see it when Carol tells him that maybe hes a late bloomer too. Just my .02. Thanks for another awesome reaction!

I could not have imagined in S1E2 that Daryl crying at Merle's death would have made me cry... but here we are....

I'm a year late but this is great because I don't have to wait for your uploads. Looking at how you have so much empathy for people who do horrible things in the apocalypse, I would give you three weeks max to survive in this situation. 🤣
I get how you want to see the best in everyone but here's one thing to think about. You said that before the apocalypse the governor was probably a good person. The problem is it's POST apocalypse so who you're dealing with is who he is now. You can't hope people will just be their old selves and hope to survive. Who the governor is right now and what he's capable of is how you have to manage the situation
Merle’s death honestly crushed me. Yes the dude did some garbage things, but he redeemed himself imo, especially with how he went after the governor
9:45 I agree with you 100%, but I was also taught that we shouldn't judge people for the choices they make if we don't know what the options are.
Also, this comment is me giving a standing ovation to Michael Rooker, one of the absolute best at playing a bad guy who isn't necessarily all that bad

I wish Rick would have changed his mind sooner so he could have stopped Merle from taking Michonne. I'm sad that Merle was killed only because his death hurt Daryl so much.
That's the thing about this show that keeps you on the edge! You never know who survives! But there was a bit of Yondu in Merle after all! Great reaction Daniel. And good luck to Luton in the playoffs. 🤙🏼🧟♂️⚽️
Merle had no place to go except out with a bang for his brother. He redeemed himself - to me. Good for Michonne getting in his head too. Psychoanalysis is necessary for full enjoyment. Great job.😊
Merele went out fighting and trying to give his brother and his new family a fighting chance. He took out some of the governors men and almost the governor himself. He let Michonne go so I think he did redeem himself but sadly didn’t get that chance to make it back to our group. RIP Merle and poor Daryl! 😢
Merle is a sad death not because of him really, but of the thought of how it effects his brother. He realized while riding with Machaon that he had no redemption no remorse of what he did so because he couldn't and wouldn't he sacrificed himself so his brother might be safer but failed because of the lack of assistance because he had nobody on his side showing if he did he could have killed the Governor. however, in the end he said "im not begging" saying that he didnt want to live because he knew nobody wanted him to.
It’s a tough death… but I also completely disagree. I’m not sure if I kept it in the reaction, but I also mentioned that my feeling of emptiness was more for Daryl, and what he had to experience in that moment. Meryl was a broken character… even before the apocalypse, and as I said.. this kind of world doesn’t lend enough time for turning character arcs 😭 - I do not forgive nor justify Meryl and his decisions… but I know he was trying toward the end to make a right decision… that I will remember..

Merle was some of the best characters in these seasons. He is still probably the best personality of TWD I've seen. Michael Rooker is so underrated as an actor. This death broke me and I really think Merle had the MOST potential as one of Ricks right hand men in these seasons. Big missed opportunity imo. Merle's been through so much, by far the most tragic character. But also makes The Governor my favorite TV Villain killing someone I really liked Merle.
I think Merle didn't see himself as redeemable and would have no place in Rick's group. Too bad because I thought he was if he just gave it a chance. Daryl certainly thought so, Carol too and Herschel. And Michonne seems like she thought he could be reasoned with even when he was taking her to the Governor. To my mind Daryl and Merle are likely the products of possibly generations of addiction, poverty and abuse. They are coming from behind in terms of living in a world alongside well adjusted people. RIP Merle.
I agree with a lot of what you say in these reaction videos. This series does such a good job of showing the contrast between different characters. Merle never had the new sense of purpose that Da found when he became a part of this group. The character arcs, you just never know.The speculation, is normal. It's part of the nature of the show. Your feeling about shane and merle death is so spot on..
I actually feel like Shane had far less excuse for how he acted than Merle did. Shane grew up with advantages that I doubt that Merle did and in a dangerous world he was lucky enough to end up with friends around him. Daryl and Merle had alcoholic parents that beat them. Merle was an addict and had done time in prison. They were obviously poor and uneducated and more comfortable with criminals than your average citizen. Merle ended up with the Governor and did his bidding but how surprising is that. He was wounded and thought he had been abandoned. The Governor saved his life but once he realized Daryl was alive all bets were off, imo, it was all about getting back to Daryl. I always thought that the whole initial encounter between Glenn, Maggie and Merle was badly handled. Telling Merle that Daryl was alive and then saying they wouldn't bring him to him was a disaster waiting to happen...and it did.

I've never heard a fan say they hated Merle. I love Merle. He really saved our family by taking the governor himself. This show will have you feel in ways you never thought possible. I mean seriously, when Merle came back. I was so happy to see him

But see, this is why so many people love your reactions. I found your channel last night and have been binging them since, and that's exactly why. You don't care about the action, the violence, the explosions...you care about the PEOPLE, and The Walking Dead is not a show about zombies. It's about people. It's about why they do what they do. People complaining about analyzing the show psychologically are completely missing the point of what they're watching in the first place.

People saying that they love Merle is just wild. He had one redeeming quality… his abusive and toxic love for his brother. But he was a mean, violent, disrespectful racist a**hole. Wanting to see him change and earn the groups trust is one thing, but to say that you loved him from what you did see from him is 🚩 🚩 🚩
With that being said… Michael Rooker is an amazing actor! And played this character perfectly!
For a second I thought you were saying that’s what I said 😆 - you just mean generally right? Yeah it’s definitely a stretch to say I like him. I think I could’ve liked him If he’d have had a different upbringing/path, but he didn’t so 🤷♂️.
It does feel shitty for him to die though… I feel bad for him as he’s been through more than many of us can probably imagine… but he chose to continue choosing the wrong path, when he had an opportunity to chose the right. That’s why I can’t forgive him.

I do hate the Darryl never got the brother that he so badly wanted and deserved. But that’s about it. He did too much to our group for me to forgive 🤷🏾♀️
You can love a shady/a-hole/villainous type of character while also not liking/agreeing with them or what they do lol. Merle is someone I wouldn't have anything to do with IRL, but in the context of the story he is a dynamic (and well acted) character that also fits into the traditional tragic character category. A great character does not necessarily equal a nice or "good" character that could be your bff. Things are rarely so black and white in life or in good storytelling.
@@DanReaddWdym? He did end up choosing the right path. I love Merle's redemption arc. He let Michonne go and went over to Woodbury (almost certainly knowing he'd meet his end) to take out as many people as possible, to give our group a fighting chance. That's redemption.

I gotta say that i totally get your views on morality and stuff, and you shouldnt be ashamed of it to be honest. In my opinion you can't just label human beings as good or bad (except people like the philip) and there is always a whole lot of stuff to take into perspective when looking at people like merle. I'm not saying that I defend merle's actions by the way, I'm only saying that his behaviour can be explained and that he did (kinda) redeem himself

Merle was a great character in this season like he was a bad guy and a killer but he did have a soft spot and that was his brother that was the only thing he cared about and he went on a suicidal mission to protect him, that might not make him a good person or give him redemption but it shows how much he would sacrifice for Daryl.
also I love how you press pause and talk, some people just talk over important scenes and I value your thoughts on this show 🌷
