- Fall and Spring are when seeding is commonly talked about, but when is the best time to seed or overseed your lawn? This is a great question and you'll want to know what your seeding window is in order to be the most successful. Here I discuss the seeding window as well as walk you through a step by step process to take after seeding.

The commissary is still there and the finance center is still there. All the housing has been redone and has now been sold to the public. There’s also new apartments and green space businesses and restaurants. It’s a really nice area.
Wife works in construction and she got calls from client 2 weeks after site finished saying they didn't see grass. Asked her what they used, and was able to help out with setting expectations. Takes a bit, but a good KBG can't be matched. Traffic & sun tolerance, healing ability (bald/brown spots), and that domination color.
I read there was a person soaked his grass seed for a week then spread it out on a towel and when it started to sprout he spread it out.
Geneticist are breeding a quick germination trait into many of the new types of seeds for example a bluegrass seed called “jump start”
Any chance to push it 2 weeks early? I'm on the Indiana/Michigan line...I just aerated and my machine broke.....lol
yeah I don't thing 2 weeks early is too bad - you should be fine.
Seeded TTTF last week and had a lot of grass up in less than 4 days. 6 days later, it's almost as tall as the rest of the lawn. Crazy how good some of these hybrids are.
I want to know how the science works for sure. They are literally changing nature.
Please do not forget about us warm grass season folks with your podcasts!
Thank for all the information I can’t wait till spring. I’ll be waiting for good weather for another reason not just for the motorcycle ✌🏽
Just moved to a new house in Chicago suburbs… it’s October 6th… anything I can do to prepare the yard for next summer still?
Super duper brand new... just trying to decide if I want bermuda or zoysia here in northwest florida... 😅
I seeded Mazama KBG last Fall. I didn’t see ANY signs of germination until about day 18. Then it stopped growing for about 5 days then it grew very quickly. KBG definitely makes you work for it but the results are worth the wait.
I still don’t understand the mowing during overseeding. We’re mowing every 2-3 days now then when we over seed in the fall we can’t mow for 30 days?
you can mow but just be light and quick about it. Give it at least 2 weeks, maybe 3. There are times when you have to "break rules" like when you get your tonsils out you eat ice cream even though it's bad for your diet.
Watched this on the podcast. Watched it again here. Lol
Mini clips 👍
So if i over seed can i put starter fertilizer with milo and weed and feed or is that too much i got told weed and feed during the fall.
I have the same question when seeding this fall but using milo. What else do you put down besides milo?
Now some seed is coated with something .
I purchased a Scott’s KBG bag, it had decent cultivars. But I threw down in the spring. A month later I started to see KBG in the areas I threw the seed. I did not water at all. What helped was we had record rainfall in the spring 😂
Allyn - For the 1st and 2nd mow, should I bag or mulch?
Allyn, what if i put dwn kbg seed after aerating then 2 weeks later put dwn fescue or rye so they germinate about the same time? Thanks again.
Would avoid it. Your be adding unnecessary foot traffic/undue stress to new seedling.
My $0.02, stick with KBG. Takes a bit to wake up from winter, but as long as you have the sun and care for it (water, fert, disease control, etc.) your bare feet will thank you. And mow 2x/wk next year and you'll force it to thicken up.
@@BradChristie thanks for the advice bro.
Allyn, I, too, did some time at Fort Benjamin Harrison while in the Army and learned journalism, writing, broadcasting, and photography. For those that may not know Fort Benjamin Harrison is/was a multi-service base so it had people from all branches of the military going through the same training.
Good info on the seeding, Allyn. As in many things, timing is critical .... and so is the weather. Good luck to everyone with their fall lawn care projects.
for sure I enjoyed my time there. Was cool to go to school with all branches. It was also the best school I ever attended - DINFOS (defense information school) which is where you must have gone too because all the broadcasters were in some of the same classes as us writers.
What’s your thoughts on trying to grow Bermuda going into the fall. I’m here in northwest Florida north of Destin. So we’re still warm and even temps into the 80-90 til about October. I like coloring outside the lines when it comes to seeding. I seeded this summer some Bahia in my front yard.
You should start like this weekend. Days are getting shorter and the Bermuda needs alot of sunlight. I'd say you are on the tail end of the window.
I just put down KGB in MI last week Sunday. It will be 7 Days September 1st and I haven't seen a single sprout. This is in a bare spot in my recently graded yard.
I used Starter Fert, Humic, Kelp, and Milorganite. I'm going to hit it with some StarterX around the 2nd/3rd week of September. Hoping it all goes well. I'm at 5 days and see nothing. (I put down ALOT of seed, around 120 LBS of 80% KGB). It'll be interesting how it goes.
Hi, if a lawn was reseeded along with horse manure(almost fresh. not compost), what weed killer to use prevent growth of weeds?
I tested midnight, and almost all of that popped off in 7 days. Scotts 100% blend was about the same time. A lot of seed is prechilled, and it pops off faster that way, but I also THINK the pre-chilled KBG pouts longer.
After the 45 days can you apply a fall pre-emergent or is it best not to use a fall pre-emergent at all after seeding in the fall?
OK. You just answered my question. I just ripped out a row of bushes in my backyard and planted grass seed (Kentucky Blue from Super Seed Store..... I live out in Dwight Illinois - south of Joliet - and am prepping my house to sell it..... whole life just flipped upside down in a matter of weeks and got a new job. Quitting my current job and moving out of tax laden Illinois and looking at homes in...... the Griffith Indiana and Crown Point area..... side bar over) and while on the one side that sees SOME shade from my shed that's back there from about 10am-3pm - I'm already seeing EXCELLENT sprouts coming up..... a lot of them actually. But on the other side (should clarify, the area is split by a sidewalk.... that leads to said shed) of the sidewalk which is in the sun pretty much 100% of the daylight hours....... very....... VERY few sprouts have popped up. I even fertilized that side with starter fert and it pales in comparison to the other side. I'm almost certain it is because the other side is seeing a couple hours of shade each day, meaning the water I'm laying down isn't evaporating as much as on the sunny side. Not that I'm not watering enough, it's just that the shadier side is probably cooler and retaining more moisture. Not going to lie..... probably should've watched this before I did what I just did. I sprinkled a little more seed and peat moss on the sunny side before I did my usual watering. I planted about 10 days ago. If the sunny side is still looking depressing here in about 2 more weeks....... I'm going to need some advice.
Continuing the video after I paused it to leave my comment. I used the same bag of KB grass in the area I mentioned. The one side started showing within 5 days..... it's looking phenomenal here at about the 10 day mark. The other side..... again, VERY few sprouts. I'm talking like a blade here..... a blade there..... a blade barely anywhere, haha. The side that's looking great...... looks like I might be able to mow it already in a week or two....... hopefully when the other side gets its shit together and starts sprouting significantly more than it has..... which is barely at all. And again..... the seed was from the same bag I purchased on Super Seed Store's website. AND, again, I starter fertilized the side that ain't doing squat because I knew it would be in the sun all day and need all the help it could get. Makes me really question the importance of starter fertilizer, haha.
I seeded Jonathan Green Black Beauty fescue on July 31. Package said this seed germinated 10-14 days. I soaked my seed with hose end sprayer with hydrogen peroxide. Germination in half the time in five days.
??????
This is going to be very helpful on the renovation I'll be doing for my neighbor this year... Also 1st
If only there was St Augustine seed.
if there were, I'd get an exclusive on it and get rich lol
@@Thelawncarenut StrikitRich, even.
Is it a good idea to aerate as well?
What about time of mowing for warm season grass
Allyn good evening, how low should i cut my lawn before aeration and seeding.... Thanks
