I seriously don't think it is only 1% of cranks failing. I have had 2 of the effected cranks. A Dura-ace 9000 and a Ultegra 6800. BOTH have failed! That is a 100% failures rate for me! I'm a senior citizen! I don't produce much power. They have known about problem for a long time and are just now doing something about it. 4 years after they fixed the problem.
It's customers like you that make me think there is a lot more affected. It's going to be interesting seeing this unfold in real time and see how many are affected "Now and Over the Last 10 Years". I'm sure that 1% is going to increase and just maybe become a full recall...
In regard to the Shimano crank situation. Two thoughts. What liability does the shop doing the inspection carry ? Two, in a few years this will be forgotten and people won't have their cranks inspected. On the small chance that one finally fails, (and remember how many were mfg), someone gets hurt (which has happened). If it is the original owner, bike shop is in jeopardy. If not, Shimano may be dealing with a law suit. What is the attitude of Shimano dealers about this ?
The thing i'm wondering is, this will be a cycle right ? Till we get a failure on our cranks. The published crank models, they all are going to fail, so we are going to come and go periodically. It's a bit concerning
Hallo,my name is Eko, i am from Indonesia, Surabaya City. My crankset ultegra FC6800 de-laminasi and cracks😭 I need help contacting Shimano. Please can you help me Thank you
Hopefully this is helpful. There is a contact number at the bottom of their recall post. bike.shimano.com/en-US/information/customer-services/corrective-actions/11-speed-hollowtech-ii-crankset-recall-notice.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwjt-oBhDKARIsABVRB0zpdGXxTZAvzapjaU0wb_OH0lZxQYe6qWZgBGrPv82lcpgQiLPezgEaAvcHEALw_wcB
If it was me.I would cut my losses and sell the crank to scrap metal.I couldn't have that on my conscious that someone can possibly get hurt. Most people are not going to get there crank inspected.
So what if a crank has been inspected? How does that conclude that it won't fail in the future? It doesn't fail until it fails. Why is there a presumption that, before actual failure, you'll receive some sort of warning sign in the form of cracks or separation?? That's ridiculous. It could just fail at any time without visual warning signs. And is Shimano suggesting we take our cranks to the bike mechanic before EVERY ride so they can inspect it? Doesn't this stuff degrade over time??? At what point do we stop having to inspect our cranks? It makes zero sense. My comment isn't directed at you, but really to Shimano.
Absolutely! This is a real wait-and-see situation. I think this recall will change in 6-12 months when all the claims are submitted, and real data comes in. It looks to me like they haven't really pinpointed the time of the issue, if it was only a few or all cranks. It's truly a trainwreck. All those questions (which are very valid) need to come from Shimano or Shimano Dealer. We'll see if that happens, but be nice to your shop or mechanic because they are really only messager.
"Every other part on your bicycle has the same percentage of chance to fail." Great point. 👍
True, at least if this one does fail it will be replaced by Shimano.
@@IKnowAGuyBicyclesYes. But If I die because of a broken crank arm it won't be funny
Would you get on a plane if you knew 1 in every 100 would crash?

Why aren't there "inspected" stickers, with a place to fill in a date ? I'm sure there is a way to affix them so they won't come off.
It's still early, but I'm sure some of those good questions will be answered here soon. At some point, this may be a full recall.

I don't thing they will all fail, but more then 1% they are suggesting.
