Actually the Ocellated Turkey (Meleagris Ocellata) is a separate species from both the Common Turkey (Meleagris Gallopavo) and Blue Peafowl (Pavo Cristatus), the former being most closely related to the ocellated turkey, in fact peafowl and turkeys are gamebirds, but they are not that closely related, they belong to entirely different families within the order Galliformes, turkeys are in the subfamily Meleagridinae within the family Tetraonidae, whilst peafowl are in the subfamily Pavoninae within the family Gallidae.
This is the lateral and frontal display of the ocellated turkey or Agriocharis ocellata. Bird species is native to cental america from belize, guatemala and south mexico. There is a captive population in belgium, germany, which breeds quit succesfully. We have been shipping youngsters ariund the globe to several private collections and zoos.
I've been hearing that bird (the oropendola) whole my life, I could identify that sound far before seeing the animal. As a nice fact, it's one of the most complex sounds produced by an animal ;)
Germán Rivas I know right, but do you think it might be a coincidence that both birds sound similar? I'll show you another video where the same thing happens. The Ocellated Turkey is meant to display a high pitched shrill type sound. ua-cam.com/video/380p6Qix7LM/v-deo.html
the first sound is the turkey and the other one is the oropendola, they live in the same biomes. Though the oropendola has different species and a wider range.
The ladies weren't too impressed by his flamboyant impressive show. They don't play an easy head game.
It's like if a Peafowl x Turkey drank a few Caffeinated energy drinks. And the cameraman is standing on a ball.
