Like are they just casually pulling their own eyeballs out and putting the other guys' balls inside the socket (or even ontop the one they already naturally have)? Also it never really seems like there's a lot of pain involved (yes I know, they are ninjas, but still).

before watching - i think he is heavily downplayed during shippuden. He was already elite jonin during part 1 and then trained to remove rust and gained an MS early part 2. That alone excels him near kage or low kage (MS kamui is a big deal). Kakashi during Akatsuki suppression is kage level, fought Kakuzu while being pressured by Hidan AND protecting team 10 WITHOUT MS. Pain arc Kakashi and onwards does get more respect but yeah. He's for sure downplayed, but the problem with early-mid Shippūden Kakashi is Kamui takes it out of him. Once he uses it, he's pretty much done. That why war arc Kakashi is broken, cuz he doesn't have the setbacks. Plus I think most of the Mid tier akatsuki get downplayed quite a bit too. Deidara, Sasori and Kakuzu all had the plot play against them, Deidara was hard countered with sasuke's arsenal, Sasori faced his Grandma who knew all his techniques plus had antidote made by sakura, Kakuzu's gets basically ambushed twice, and then Naruto pulls up with a one shot move. None of them were defeated in a fair 1v1 fight. Facing one of these guys, would force Kakashi to use Kamui, and then the outcome of the battle would depend on whether he completely offed them, cuz Kakashi will be in no condition to fight after

But you're right, the mid-tier akatsuki pose a threat in a 1v1 fight because they're so hax and matchups. MS is indeed a risk but the fact that he has it earlier on means he has enough power to take out bijuu, other kages, and anyone who has durability hax. He is also way smarter than most of the akatsuki and has always been since part 1. But he (early/mid shippuden) definitely struggles with mid-tier akatsuki, which was your point in the first place. I don't know about hiden beating Kakashi in part 1 not to mention he is quite good at genjustu, and is second to kurunei in that aspect so even though he loses in strength he he makes up for it in that aspect also hiden genjustu resistance isn't all that great so a good enough genjustu user can take he down.

War arc Kakashi is where he would be able to put up a great fight against all the Akatsuki if they all came at him at once and also solo any 2 man teams that were originally assigned. So like Pain x Konan; Itachi x Kisame etc. he should be able to beat them. I think he'd probably still lose if it was all of them vs him because he'd get overwhelmed. DMS obviously clears. However, Hokage Kakashi beats them altogether without that much of an issue too imo. It's stated in the light novels that he's actually a lot stronger than war arc. Yeah he lost the Sharingan and kamui, but apparently he mastered all the chakra elements and also developed several S rank jutsu after the fact. For instance, he performs a fire style jutsu that could easily blow up villages and if i remember correctly, he could spam that too. Purple lightning is also much stronger and more versatile than chidori, and who knows what else he has. It's made extremely obvious that the only thing that held him back in part 1 and early Shippuden was the fact he hadn't trained since the Anbu. Also, the sharingan is more of hindrance on his other jutsu and chakra supplies. Yeah it gave him an edge in some ways despite the lack of training, but he would've been way stronger by part 1 and Shippuden if he didn't have Sharingan and just trained the entire time instead. He made Chunin and Jonin before both Minato and Itachi, that's how much of a prodigy he is. Hokage Kakashi is just him living up to some percentage of his full potential, really. Puts up a valiant fight vs Pain. Stalemates post 5 kage summit Sasuke. Hell, i think he would've soloed Hidan and Kakuzu back in Akatsuki suppression, if he needed to (said he didn't get to use his MS because Naruto arrived). Overall, he's underestimated a lot. Hell, Kakashi was near Kage level/low kage even in part 1, despite having not trained for like 13-14 years. Him defeating Zabuza is proof enough. So he was likely the same strength level as when he entered Anbu. Proceeded to not even train between Shippuden and part 1 as well, only figured out how to use Kamui, but is stated at the same level as part 1 apart from that. Kakashi rocks, one of the best and deepest characters in Naruto I think. Some reasoning for scaling: Early Shippuden Kakashi intimidated Deidara and damaged him, as well as protected everyone from his blasts. One can argue in a 1v1, he would've fared well against him (although probably end up losing due to chakra issues). Deidara went up against Hebi Sasuke and nearly murdered him. Put up a close fight. Although Kakashi is weaker than sasuke here, he's close to that level. Hebi Sasuke is for sure kage level. Oh and Deidara also beat Gaara. Akatsuki suppression, he literally carries the team until Shikamaru runs off with Hidan. He fights both at once. That's pretty insane, considering Kakuzu I think is generally considered superior to Deidara and Hidan is great support/unkillable. Asuma, who must've been somewhat close to Kage level himself and was high elite jonin, struggled just against Hidan whilst having support from other Jonin levels. Ended up kicking the dirt. Difference is night and day. Kakashi also kills 2 hearts from Kakuzu and is directly involved in killing his 3rd. So he has a drawn out fight with them and the njust Kakuzu. All while trying to avoid using Kamui, as it drained him so much, but sounding confident in the fact he would've been fine had he used it. At that point, Kakashi may have been on the level of Hebi Sasuke, maybe even a little stronger, considering he was 2v1 Akatsuki members who captured a perfect Jinchuuriki and Kakuzu was at least similar to, if not stronger than Deidara. During Pain arc, he was fighting a non exhausted Deva path, that is virtually about 80% of the strength of Pain. He also fought Asura path alongside, which was the most offensively capable apart from Deva. Kills Asura. Saves himself from Deva using Kamui. Saves Choji from Asura using Kamui. Is congratulated and recognised by Nagato for his strength and efforts. At this point, he's 100% stronger than Hebi Sasuke. Probably stronger than Taka Mangekyou Sasuke too, pre 5 kage summit. Well, that Sasuke may be even weaker than Hebi, it's a whole discussion... Ends up fighting post 5 kage summit, fully awakened Mangekyou Sasuke. This version is quite a lot stronger than the one who fought the Raikage and is objectively stronger than izanagi Danzo. And Kakashi literally stalemates him until Sasuke awakens his full armor Susanoo and then starts losing his vision. Yeah, Sasuke was kinda low on chakra but he does regain a lot of it from Karin and some rest before Kakashi shows up. Still much stronger than at the start of 5 kage summit. So Kakashi basically relative to Raikage, if not actually stronger at this point. During war arc, Kakashi goes ape. He defeats a team consisting of the 7 swordsmen, a Hozuki, Zabuza, Haku, mostly by himself. He also keeps most of his squad alive. He low diffs that entire enemy team, basically. Then he fights another few days against other edo tensei and zetsu. Finally ends up helping Naruto against Obito and his six paths. These Jinchuuriki were made into perfect Jinchuuriki thanks to Obito, had Edo tensei regenerating, limitless chakra, were enhanced by Rinnegan and Sharingan at the same time and had powerful jutsu themselves already. Him and Guy fight against second state Jinchuuriki like that, and are winning lol. He also wanted to use kamui to defend against like 6 Bijuu bombs and thought he could do it. But all of this is after fighting for days and also fighting the amped second state jinchuuriki... Then also helps a lot with the Obito fight and nearly rips off the head of the Mazo statue. He helps a bunch more. Then him and Obito end up going to the kamui dimension and duke it out 1v1. And Kakashi actually just wins, straight up. Regardless of Obito being the strongest Akatsuki, possibly even without his Kamui (still had Rinnegan, Woodstyle and sharingan). So go figure from there. Especially for Hokage Kakashi lol
