7:44 the fact that Locust Labs has decided to keep the Rommel alive while CGL goes on their jag of "tearing down statues" earns a lot of respect from me. I don't have the space in my small apartment for a 3D printer setup (not a subject for debate, been down that road already, if I could, I already would) but if they offer these on Etsy or something I'd buy them!
Last year I printed myself some 28mm scale BT minis as statues I could paint for a fun project. A friend saw them and next thing I know we're playing Alpha Strike with these giant statues just straight on the floor. The real power of 3D printing is options. You can get into super specific things like making everything properly Truescale if you really wanted to. Or do crazy things like print 28mm scale models of the original design for the Phoenix Hawk LAM with full transforming functionality. You'll never be at the mercy of any tabletop gaming company ever again. You print what you want. Not what a company decides for you.
After having a personal conversation with Blaine Pardoe, I was shocked and disgusted with the way the Alphabet Mafia had him tarred and feathered. I'm appalled by the people who call themselves "social justice warriors" and then treat people unjustly by playing the card.
Bear in mind there are a couple different types of 3D printers. If you want high quality minis, you got with a resin printer while a FDM printer works better for terrain of a simpler nature. Shouting out two more options for STLs. Metal Core Collectibles and Sir Mortimer Bombito. Both got good options for those.
Great end point, Mage Leader. The, 'culture clanners' shouldn't be allowed to just invade the sphere and turn the universe into their own private sandbox. The invasion HAS to be resisted...or it's the end.
As a side note, Magistracy Monthly also includes board and unit files for MegaMek. So even if you are a digital only BT player you still get content out of it.
Thanks for the vid Mage. And yeah, glad that we got a bunch of smaller folk for BT that defy the shlock CGL throws out. Hopefully we can get another wiki that isn't pozzed.
Like Razorfist, I got into BT from the old cartoons when I was a kid, but I really enjoyed the PC game MW2:Mercenaries. I didn't dig the looks of the mechs, so I didn't buy many. Then the MW Online game came out with a new, more modern take on those Mechs. I had hoped they would release minis of those designs. Then Catalyst game around, and made minis that looked closer to the designs in MWO. Not all of them looked great, but the ones I wanted came in packs, so I would end up with Mechs that I didn't want. When I first got into BT, it seemed that the game was pretty much dead. It was kept alive by its fans. The store I went to had a small selection of pewter mechs. Every so often, a new Starter set will come out. However, it didn't seem to have gained much momentum, until Catalyst. Then again, it might not be because of Catalyst, other than them holding the torch; when Gamesworkshop pissed off a bunch of their customers, and then those ex-customers discovered BT. I hope the best for BT. I got into it, when it felt dead. Now, it seemed more alive than ever; with a very successful KS campaign. There are people not happy with Catalyst, and it is the fault of Catalyst. Sadly they don't care. I personally not as fond as I was on buying some of those tanks from the new set...
It’s nice to know the alternatives out there. Even if you still follow Catalyst or not. It makes the game better. Maybe CGL will stop doing this crap and go back to what they were doing right for decades
To throw my two cents in: While some of the sculpts IWM definitely show their age, to me they have a LOT more personality than the majority of the CGL plastics. May just be the grognard in me coming to the surface, but personally think a lot of them still look pretty good (especially the second sculpt of the Atlas. Objectively the best sculpt of the Atlas.) Not to mention Mike Noe and the staff at IWM are fantastic as well and absolutely deserve the business they get. Plus I don't think CGL gets a cut, or at least not a big one from the stuff they sell.
If you're looking for an entry-level 3D printer, try the SOVAL SV06. Its got direct drive, easy to remove parts bed, auto bed levelling, linear rails - all the upgrades that you'd ever want! All for just $200 (its on sale). A kilo of filament is just $12! 3D printing is an INSANELY inexpensive hobby - even compared to gaming.
I'm sad to see CGL bring so much contention to BT. I've been apart of the community for so long, and it feels like there is more negative thoughts and commentary being put forward by CGL and many other creators. The open hate of people's thoughts and opinions(not always even related to political issues) is astounding.
Razorfist brought me back to Battletech as well. I hadn't played it since the mid 90s. Catalyst are hypocrites but I do enjoy they're much needed redesigns of the Battletech mechs. I just by them off the secondary market now and alternate 3D prints.
If you're 3D printing mix in some impact-resistant resin as well, the normal stuff is super brittle and drops are disastrous. And don't ever breathe the stuff in, you get really badly allergic after a while.
Red Dog Minis has an interesting line of Mech Minis in his Micro Armor tag on his site. I'm personally one who's glad to have a large number of vintage minis. And, a lot of the old mechs are derived from Macross/Robotech, and there's the MiniTech line of Macross/RoboTech minis.
heh.. and here i still use my cardboard mechs from ... ummm ... ok so i have been in bt for a looooong time.... love your product sir and you do a great job of not coming off as a noob :) just giving a fellow merc some flak
One of my biggest issues (besides not having anyone to play with) is maps: there are SO FEW MAPS TO PLAY ON. I see people have made some maps online but most of them look frankly terrible, with diagonal roads going nowhere and buildings with jagged corners. I need more maps, and I would certainly buy some more maps if someone were to make and distribute them.
There are a lot of 3D print alternative mechs and services out there that are way better than the old derpy, blocky metal mechs from the 80s and 90s. I'm glad we have these resources for resin prints because I hate assembling metal miniatures with a passion.
There are some FABULOUS mech designs available from a large number of 3D designers. Quite a few people have made cottage industries out of buying commercial licenses to those designs, and producing 3D prints and selling them. eBay has a ton of sellers doing just that, and I've saved a ton of money over the last few years buying models that are much better looking than the stuff that Catalyst Games or Iron Wind Metals put out.
I 100% agree, 3d printing is a great option. I may not have a 3d printer yet, but I just had to get a few miniatures based on mech warrior to play battletech. Edit: mainly the centurion.
Some of the 3rd party pre-printed models are amazing quality. And they're affordable. 3d printing has come a long way over the last few years, may it encourage a "certain company" to price things more reasonably
My first BATTLE TECH MATCH WAS IN 1986, MY FIRST MECHWARRIOR 1 GAME WAS IN 1989 ON DOS, LOCUST VS BATTLEMASTER, KNEE CAPPING FROM behind WITH A MEDIUM LASER ANYONE??? GOOD TIMES, WITH GOOD FRIENDS ALL AROUND
Razor's vid popped up for me this morning as well, made me wonder where you've been; lo and behold, you post a few hours later. Doing good work here, Mage. The true fans will persist, while the tourist ideologues will burn themselves out whilst we stop listening, only to keep playing our games as we have for decades now.
I 3d print almost everything outside of using some parts of kits i have laying around but 99% I print. From miniatures to busts or small to medium statues. I have more options than ever. I resin print everything. Ots easy as hell. Took ne one day to get my settings in thst i have been using for the ksst 3 years! Super smooth and i orint at .03 layer level for maximum snoothness to detail quality to time.
In a lot of cases for mechs from TRO 3058 or earlier, I actually prefer the original versions. The Japanese ones especially. The new ones look good, but too samey in a lot of cases. Good links and thanks. My issue with 3D printing is ventilation for the quality stuff. I live in an old building and the only air flow is what I make with fans, and the hood above my oven. Anyhoo, I'm still good with Iron Wind. pretty sure that's not giving Catalyst money with how the liscencing got divided.
I will always encourage people to seek out 'alternate' sources for getting their hands on rules and models. Though I do want to offer one small correction: The Rommel, mentioned at 7:36 (though not by name) has recently had a new variant published and has a model rolling out with the Mercenaries kickstarter
@@mageleader3699 Oh, sorry, I meant that you didn't mention it by name. As far as I'm aware, it's mentioned by name in the RG: ilClan Vol. 27 under the Patton entry, which was published after the whole debacle on the official forum
While personally I still have some CGL plastics, the market that they have not been interested in at least would be bigger scale BT. That's kinda why I want to get a 3d printer for myself, or at the very least find someone who can print. That way I can get ahold of a large amount of 12 or 15mm scale mechs, infantry, and tanks. If that was easily sourced then I think that I would go that way only.
Thank you, I admit I have been discouraged. I got a lot of the catalyst miniatures and just had not painted them for over year after the Pardoe thing. I had a few 3d printed models so I will paint those.
Don't let a bad company discourage you from playing the game you love. Enjoy it despite the mismanagement from CGL and the tourists that have come to infest the franchise, I guarantee it'll make the right people angry.
Yeah the old BT minis just don't do it for me. 3D printed is definitely the best option if you want some of the newer designs. And there are a crap ton of designs out there!
The problem I have always had with the MWO designs is that they are allergic to trying anything round, so they end up looking very angular even on designs where they are more slimmed down like the Spider. As much as I disagree with Catalyst's handling of lore, firing one of their best writers, and advertising the brand as a troon beacon, the minis are the one thing Catalyst has done right, in my opinion. Incorporating aspects of both the 80's line art designs and the MWO pragmatism aesthetic, which is why I found the bash on the modern Black Knight odd considering it was designed to look like the original line art from the 80's.
The resin printer market is so robust right now. You can find so many files for just about any game. A filament is nice to use for terrain though. With resin make sure you can vent that shit though.

What's going on with CGL? Can someone give me a quick summary of the issue and why people do not want to support them? Is it the usual wargame company price-gouging?
Catalyst has repeatedly catered to extreme leftists. The biggest controversy was firing Blaine Pardoe over his conservative views and a spat with someone who was stalking him online under a false name. Said stalker then got his short story published in Shrapnel magazine shortly thereafter. They have yet to apologize. There was also an incident where a staff member stated that CGL would be renaming the Rommel variant of the Patton tank because of its namesake's ties to a certain Austrian painter, which caused concerns as many planets, cities, battles, and vehicles are named after historical figures from World War II and the American Civil War.
While not happy with CGL treatment of their author, I do love their new mechs and boxes. Problem with Razor buy the old boxes, there are very few left and their expensive lesser qaulity than the new CGL box sets. Sorry but those 20+ plastic mechs in the old box set are hot garbage compared new sculpts. That said I do support people doin' whatever to play BT, used, third party etc.
As far as I know, Iron Wind Metals still hasn't gotten the resources to make the new 'Mech minis in metal. Though I can imagine what they would cost to do in pewtered lead. I can't imagine IWM doing them in anything else. Each mini is already pricey but an Atlas would beggar you. Edit: This makes me think they've been cut out by Catalyst because they're a third-party miniature manufacturer that's only contracted to make the BattleTech product. If that's true, it's a shame since they provided the miniatures for this game we love for decades.
From what I understand, IWM reserves the right to issue single minis, while CGL is able to distribute minis only through force packs or blind boxes. The digital sculpt files are shared between both companies, hence why we're able to buy pewter models of (certain) new sculpts from IWM.
Lmao I can afford IWM after the Australia tax of 85 dollaridoos shipping , they fully have heaps of new IlClan era mechs and things like K and C5 Catapults based off the AGoAC one . But you're too cheap
What are peoples good tips for introducing new players? I have two odentical stacks of mechs. Then make new players select 4 that look cool and take the same ones. Less mechs to keep track of.
They've promoted LGBT fanfiction made by some of the most toxic fans in the community, they removed a tank for having a bad name, and their work is generally poor quality.
Well I dont know the fanfiction and removing the name Romm@@ was kinda stupid. if your referring to the mechs as their work I dont see how that is low quality. I started this game in 84 when there were no mechs at all and bought a lot of metal mechs when they became available. the new plastics are head and shoulder better then the old lead. I agree that this wokism bullshit is way out of hand but there are fasctors that are affecting all big companies, the banks for instance and there esg critera is a factor and its a big one. basicall if a company doesnt toe the line then they cannot get funding unless they have a good esg rating, and the banks bought into that. So I really cannot blame the catalyst but i can blame the banks for it. also topps is a crap company and thats the problem with catalyst. I think if catalyst did not have the topps overlord they may be much better. there are just too many factors involved to actually hate catalyst. they just need an overlord company with some balls or no overlord company at all.@@mageleader3699
Do you find fishing about the newer map sets? I have felt that the maps have gotten better as time is progressed. The maps from the '80s and '90s were nice, but the maps from The Last 5 Years are absolutely incredible. And I pretty much have every map that has been put out. I don't ask this in any way being critical of your video, I'm asking out of curiosity. For the chancellor.
I am of the opinion that is not good that the company that works with the rules produces the miniatures. Battletech always allowed in the rules that you use proxies but CGL has trying to change this recently and this only turns the hobby more expensive with no benefit to the players. I have a resin 3D printer, play several miniature games and it paid back in the first month! There a plenty of free stls available that allow you to legally print your miniatures at home and play with it. Indeed, 3D printing is more complicated than, like, your paper printer connected to a computer but it is much less complicated that I supposed in the beginning
@@mageleader3699 yeah, but I can count on one hand the number of people whose opinion of me matters to me, and still have one finger left over (and I'm sure you can guess which finger). I'm curious about this channel and it's audience's opinion on "Gaslands Refuelled" as an alternative? Bad bump = going out in a blaze of glory), and more. Don't like the demolition derby idea (for some reason I don't understand... Then again, I am a Florida Man so... Ya know, me like the idea of big booms. Haha.)? There are also Wasteland Skirmishes and a whole campaign you can play going through a season of the fictional TV show with side missions. Instead of minis, you just mash up and remodel toy cars like Matchbox or Hotwheels. Vroom vroom tatata phewwww! *Boom* ! 😂 Also, I looked to make sure before buying into it and have found *no* political comments from either the author or publisher. (Unless I just didn't see it?) Catalyst doesn't make a lot of terrain, and most of the stuff put out by other companies is superior to theirs. Again, everything is table legal. There's lots of 3D printable terrain(I'm pretty sure Locust makes some), but I don't have nearly as much experience with it.
It's honestly not hard to find 3d printed terrain on Etsy and with the hex maps, it's not hard to make your own with foam or cardboard. I think Death Ray Designs makes some as well.
my comment was deleted about customizing battletech mechs with 3d printed mechwarrior style bolt ons to add some customization that cgl could never give. I dont understand why it was deleted. Did I violate some hidden community rule?
I got a Filament and Resin printer, plus I grab all the great new plastic sculpts from Catalyst Games Labs. I even get metal minis from Iron Winds Metals from time to time. Catalyst Game Labs have some great product as well. Why would you want old, outdated rules?
You do realize the old rules are basically the exact same as the current ones, right? Battletech doesn't go through editions like D&D or Warhammer does. It just gets more rules added on top. As for the rest, what you choose to do with your money is totally up to you.

WoTC and D&D is a lost cause but I don't think CGL is quite there yet.
As Razorfist said, You need to get out of this rut that you "have to support Catalyst or BT dies". If Tops, Microsoft, and Catalyst were to implode tomorrow and no new Battletech content was ever made again, we'd still have over 40 years worth of old content and we'd have the ability to make more thanks to the power of dedicated fans and 3D printers. Right now I'm doing a long form project to reprint the old Succession War board game. Replacing the cardboard units with 3mm Battletech minis. That game is out of print but I still have the means to make my own version of it. No game is truly dead until there is no desire to play it by anyone anymore.

I remember hoping that random game stores might have some scrap, when you had to go through e-bay, and everything had jacked up prices because it was oop. This whole idea of "support the game an not the company" is a trash idea, because if you do take away support for the company that is producing product for the game, it will eventually die. The idea you are talking about is a game that slowly dwindles to death in small pockets of the internet, an existence that the game survived though, just barely once before, and one that it could not survive through again.
I've pinned a comment on the differences between printers. Will definitely mention it the next time I discuss printing.
Sir Bombito is GOATED
Bombito is amazing for sure. I'll have to check out Metal Core :)
Great end point, Mage Leader. The, 'culture clanners' shouldn't be allowed to just invade the sphere and turn the universe into their own private sandbox. The invasion HAS to be resisted...or it's the end.
Please do not compare those stravags to the true descendents of Kerensky. They are lower than members of the Bandit Caste.
I can attest that Locust Labs models are great quality. Just painted up a few of their Poe Tanks last night.
As a side note, Magistracy Monthly also includes board and unit files for MegaMek. So even if you are a digital only BT player you still get content out of it.
Matt Mason also makes some incredible proxies for a great many BattleMechs.
Thanks for the vid Mage. And yeah, glad that we got a bunch of smaller folk for BT that defy the shlock CGL throws out. Hopefully we can get another wiki that isn't pozzed.
Resin for minis

Thunderhead Studios, Hardware Studios, and Xmarx for terrain.
Same here. MW2: MERCS is my childhood memories.
It’s nice to know the alternatives out there. Even if you still follow Catalyst or not. It makes the game better. Maybe CGL will stop doing this crap and go back to what they were doing right for decades
To throw my two cents in:
While some of the sculpts IWM definitely show their age, to me they have a LOT more personality than the majority of the CGL plastics.
Congrats on the 3D printer Mage! I loved your novel!! Hope to see more down the road. Cheers!
Great information! I'll be coming back to this and seeing if I can put together a fully independent model game.
My first printer i bought for $60. I later sold it for the same price once i upgraded. 3d printing is easy and generally cheap.
Nice follow-up video! I'll need to look into these alternatives.
If you're 3D printing mix in some impact-resistant resin as well, the normal stuff is super brittle and drops are disastrous. And don't ever breathe the stuff in, you get really badly allergic after a while.

Nice turn around!

Good video, that's awesome to see you add in some people to support directly!
There used to be a guy that made maps from Google Maps and satellite imagery from real world places. Might be a good place to look?
There are a lot of 3D print alternative mechs and services out there that are way better than the old derpy, blocky metal mechs from the 80s and 90s. I'm glad we have these resources for resin prints because I hate assembling metal miniatures with a passion.
Great video!
Cool recomendations! Hope to see more when you find them!
mech 2 favorite soundtrack ever.
I forgot to mention that Etsy is a fantastic marketplace for 3D printed mechs, too.
I 100% agree, 3d printing is a great option. I may not have a 3d printer yet, but I just had to get a few miniatures based on mech warrior to play battletech.
Edit: mainly the centurion.
I need a xmas list, thaanks for bringing my mojo back with those pics of models
Some of the 3rd party pre-printed models are amazing quality. And they're affordable.
3d printing has come a long way over the last few years, may it encourage a "certain company" to price things more reasonably

Etsy has a unbelievably large assortment of 3d printed mech-merchants
Thank you! Your video came up and now i am a fan and have subscribed.
Yes, I'm aware that the tank still technically exists, but renaming it is as good as deleting it in my book.
@@mageleader3699 Oh, sorry, I meant that you didn't mention it by name. As far as I'm aware, it's mentioned by name in the RG: ilClan Vol. 27 under the Patton entry, which was published after the whole debacle on the official forum
Yep the Rommel is still around.
Thank you man. I appreciate your encouragement. @@Iamtehman8
Cheers for the info!
You will specifically want a resin printer for minis, but ive been a patreon to Matt Mason (Syllogy) for years.
I buy from 3d print people anyway
Yeah the old BT minis just don't do it for me. 3D printed is definitely the best option if you want some of the newer designs. And there are a crap ton of designs out there!
They looked cool when I started in the 90s. But looking back at them now. Wish I could melt them down and recast them in the MWO style.
The newer sculpts are much better.

Man that mech 5 og trailer hurts XD games. Ever to be released we all direly neaded at the time.
I am not he Warhammer convert crowd. Still I like your videos. ;-)
@@canislupus3655 nasty attitude.
IWM stuff is better than CGL anyway.
What are peoples good tips for introducing new players? I have two odentical stacks of mechs. Then make new players select 4 that look cool and take the same ones. Less mechs to keep track of.
For that I would recommend checking out Razor's guide in the description.
Whats wrong with catalyst? I know there was that atrocity with pardoe but what else is going on?
At this point, I see no problem with anyone who shanghais IP from CGL. They've proven themselves unworthy of the material.
What is the equivalent for an older version of the battle mech manual? Am i just missing it somehow? Thanks.
I have a 3d printer, its easy. where do i start battletech? what armies are easy to play?
I use a Mars 4 elegoo. its fun.
Catalysts sculpts... are just way to busy for 1" tall minis.
Excellent information, I still buy from catalyst, as they aren't as bad as WotC or GW, low bar I know.....
What you do with your own money is up to you. Just know that they still hold you in utter contempt.
@@mageleader3699 most companies do, I know that.
@@mageleader3699 I should definitely get some Rommel's to spite them though
@@mageleader3699 yeah, but I can count on one hand the number of people whose opinion of me matters to me, and still have one finger left over (and I'm sure you can guess which finger). IDGAF if CGL or Rando Calrissian (they/them) holds me in contempt because the reality of it is, they can't actually impose their intersectional identity politics upon me. I'll play with Rommels and buy Blaine Pardoe novels and if they come to my table, they can roll my way or GTFO.
CGL maps look good to me. I'm not artistic enough to make my own maps. And not interested in playing hexless. What's an alternative source of maps?
Or you can just use counters.
_Car Wars_ has done this for decades. They work just fine.
I'm curious about this channel and it's audience's opinion on "Gaslands Refuelled" as an alternative? It's not mech combat but it is a post apocalyptic demolition derby with everything from pistols, shotguns, machine guns up to tanks, 18 wheelers converted into war rigs, experimental nuclear engines (must go fast, no slowing down fragile so...
*Boom* ! 😂
Also, I looked to make sure before buying into it and have found *no* political comments from either the author or publisher. (Unless I just didn't see it?)
I'm a trucker by trade so the idea of being able to shoot machine guns or rockets from a rig while mowing over cars that dare get in my way sounds awesome to me. Doing it in the game sounds cool too!
Gaslands is cool. I like it.
Nothing about 3D printed terrain?
There are a few stls out on cults and mmf.
And a few whi sell it cant remember their name it was a bit pricey
Catalyst doesn't make a lot of terrain, and most of the stuff put out by other companies is superior to theirs. Again, everything is table legal. There's lots of 3D printable terrain(I'm pretty sure Locust makes some), but I don't have nearly as much experience with it.

Battletech doesn't die just because the trash company licensing the IP from Topps does. Catalyst isn't Battletech. The fans are. We're the reason it still exists at all, and we'll still be here if and when CGL croaks.
