The smaller shrimp did not have a chance. At least in the wild the smaller shrimp would have at least been acclimated to the water it swam in. In this case it was probably already struggling to get used to being dropped in water with different water parameters..

I'm not mad that the kid is interested to see what would happen, it happens in nature and it's cool to witness, but my unsolicited opinion/advice would be that the kid is a bit impatient, and he should slow down and allow for everything to take its course naturally,-- no interference.
