The fear on his face when asked if he wanted to go to the card store at 1:25. Brilliant video all round. Good intro, there must be a lot of effort when making those but they're awesome!
Wow! A deck that plays almost all of my favorite cards! I'm very new to Modern and this looks like something I can really get behind. Thanks a ton Prof and Jeff!
+Matt Adams It's very fun and surprisingly fast, sometimes they finish their turn and you have lethal on board since you have chord in hand but don't realize it. There are lots of lines of play that you can learn aside from just the combo, and it's a great deck for learning modern since it has barely any really bad matchups, even though it's not exacly cheap to build.
The splinter twin and previous pod player in me is very happy to see this deck. I love the utility of chord base decks with the chance to instant win :).
Hahahaha. Your son just became the star of this channel! "Ghostly Prison is a card that's criminally underplayed." Accurate. This card is so powerful against about half of the meta. I love it in Martyr/Proc, but it should be showing up in more white sideboards.
I was thinking more in "The Student" because both Apprentice and Pupil kinda relate more with "Master", not profesor. Ultimately is the Profesor who will determine his nickname.
At the beginning i despite Courser of Crufix, because Jeff prefer Courser to fullset of Eternal Witness & Wall of Omens.. Now i try it and now i am impressed.. not in competition with Witness or Wall, but in addition to others card is super!! My list now plays 2 Couser of Crufix, 4 Witness and 4 Wall of Omen (with a single Reveillark) and i feel good!
jeff is such a cool guy. he lives in our area, and at scg chicago, he asked me how i was doing (i'm thirteen). he somehow knew my name! i love this guy.
+Tolarian Community College Good answer. However, you're an English professor so I'd have expected at least a paragraph or two in response so I'll have to deduct a few points. Overall? I'd give that an A-
The fuck? Was just thinking about building this deck and was about to search for deck techs when I see you just uploaded this video. You are starting to scare me Prof.
I absolutely love your Modern deck videos. Have you considered doing one on the fairly recent addition to modern using Knight of the Reliquary and Retreat to Coralhelm? It looks like it's predominantly being called "Knightfall". Let's see some Bant videos! :-)
What about leyline of sanctity in the sideboard? Its another great card against burn and will keep you safe from other potential spells that will target you.
Obstinate Balooth? Should you not also play Thragtusk as a one-of because of the additional life, the beast token and the interaction with Restoration Angel?
It's probably because obstinate baloth still works with restoration angel, it's cheaper, helps fight Lilliana of the veil, and the list is very set in stone. There isn't a lot of flexibility.
The Comedy Bros. The list being set in stone is only a reiteration of the fact that it isn't played :> Thragtusk does also combo with Restoration Angel. The cost isn't so much of an issue since your deck is designed to cast Kiki, which has the same CMC. Your point about LOTV is true, but I personally would find it uncommon when you have the single Balooth in your hand and your opponent plusses with LOTV. I would just throw Thragtusk in, but it depends on your local meta. If you find that that extra one mana is too much or that non-targeted discard is prevalent, then go ahead with Balooth.
Is this better, worse, or just different from Abzan company? My intention was to build a tier 1 deck and I'm getting worried I may have spent a lot of money on an inferior deck. Thanks ahead of time for responses.
strictly going for tier 1 would probably mean going with abzan company since its a lot more consistent and the combo is a lot easier to assemle than the kiki combo
This reminds me a little of birthing pod. You can run 1 copy of a whole bunch of utility creatures, cuz you never need to worry about drawing the right one.
Tempest and a Computer Not that much of a noob question. This is a combo deck, which aims to kill your opponent in a single turn. While Sky Hussar is stronger if you are only wanting to draw, it does not allow for the combo finish which this deck is based on.
I played against a really wonky brew that was similar to this at GP Charlotte. I couldn't figure out what the point was, since he just kept blinking the walls and never drew the combo over two games. Now I get it (I hope this was his wincon).
Why is this version of R/W Kiki better than say, the Jeskai version that plays Snapcaster Mage, more burn, a bunch of cantrips and counterspells, and Celestial Colonnade? They seem pretty similar, except Jeskai Kiki seems better against combo and aggro, because it has counterspells to deal with combo and bolt alongside lightning helix and path to handle aggro.
+Carl Katt they are functionally different decks. Jeskai Kiki combo is a control deck first that back doors into a combo, Kiki Chord is a midrange value / toolbox deck that back doors into a combo.
In my local meta a lot of people started playing boogles. what are good cards against boogles that I can tutor for? Destroying an enchantment seems a bit slow.
+Vidar Thorsby I personally use Stonehorn Dignitary work really well and chording for it is usually doable at turn 3 with correct setup. where your live total start to be in danger.
+Tolarian Community College While I do like the function of Worship as an enchantment, have you ever thought about Angel's Grace as a possible replacement?
+DeanGuitarsForLife! the fact that it is a sorcery makes it feel more clunky than Chord even though it costs less mana some of the time. It also force you to stress the mana base more which causes life loss and not being able to cast spells consistently.
Hey professor you should do a video on the website "untap.in" it's a really cool way to test decks against other people or play without having to spend money.
I personally like reclamation sage a lot more than quasali pridemage. Blinking the sage with resto angel wins games against bogles and other enchantment-based decks. The fact that you can't blink quasali pridemage is a big turnoff for me.
+Pizza Pridemage is more effective against Robots and Twin since you don't need to leave up mana to chord for 3 at all times for Sage. Sage also fails to kill Torpor Orb which is a big deal. They both have good utility in different places though which is why one of each is good :)
+Jeff Hoogland Yeah, I run both just in case, but I am often let down by exalted cat since there are barely any torpor orbs in my meta. I switch them up.
Flamerush Rider triggers when it attacks, when you declare an attack with it to be more specific, and because the tokens enter the battlefield already tapped and attacking you never declared an attack with them, and therefore their abilities do not trigger.
+xanaxkamikaze People don't play that card, they play ghostly prison which fills the same role. And this deck can very easily chord for reclamation sage or quasali pridemage to get rid of any problems like this, and even has a solid non-combo wincon in powerful creatures like sun titan. Honestly, if given enough time, there isn't much in modern that can stop this deck.
+THE BATLORD can't really say because I didn't play the deck before pod ban. you could say pod is a better card than pod and be somewhat right, but they do different things, and both decks are good. Kiki chord feels very powerful in my meta.
I have played against Jeff pioliting kiki chord being the one of the first pros I have played against I was disappointed in the way he acted during our match especially being a returning player to the game
"You want to go the card store?"
"No, no..."
I thought he was thanking the child next to him for helping him tune his deck, tbh.
+StarkMaximum Me too
Me 3.
Me 4 (years old)
Same.
The fear on his face when asked if he wanted to go to the card store at 1:25.

The microphone on Skype was muted, how did Jeff hear you? Some weird telepath magic is going on.
+stovenven We're both planeswalkers, we have access to many powerful spells.
+Tolarian Community College Nice dodge, professor :3
+stovenven It's also a Windows 7 Skype window pasted onto OS X..
+stovenven Some weird Magic... The Gathering.
Excellent primer. One of the best I've seen for Kiki Chord.
Thanks for the deck teck. It was nice to hear new ideas for one of my favorite decks.
My smile from watching that video was nearly as wide as yours, Professor! :)
OMG a friend from high school married jeff!! I had no idea he played magic. That is so cool. Small world :D
Your son is SO CUTE!!
Also fun deck to build
*dies from cuteness* You and your son are too adorable Prof.
I love it in Martyr/Proc, but it should be showing up in more white sideboards.
oh my gosh!!!!!!! My mind just got blown by the adorableness of the kids! Mini-prof is so adorable!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh my god. You had me laughing so much even in the first few minutes. Great video.
Can we call the Profesor´s child: "The Student" ?
+Cristopher Pardo gonzalez I like 'The apprentice' more.
+Cristopher Pardo gonzalez oooor "the pupil"
I was thinking more in "The Student" because both Apprentice and Pupil kinda relate more with "Master", not profesor. Ultimately is the Profesor who will determine his nickname.
No, because a professor can't have his own child in one of his classes
No comment
The Professor made a Footloose reference?!?!?! My love for him just increased.
Your videos are just... the best... teach me the ways of the MTG dad.
That guy seemed cool, ill go check him out.
Also oh my gosh your kid is adorable. He is mini professor material
"Stop it daddy! Play nice!" Lol
That skit, was, ART
you are truly the new Shakespeare
I really like this deck, I might consider building this sometime in the future.
Really cool deck how do you feel about fauna shaman ? Maybe two copies to supplement the chords?
Great video, loved the corny banter, more videos with Jeff please!
Holy shit, Jeff AND the professor in the same video?
At the beginning i despite Courser of Crufix, because Jeff prefer Courser to fullset of Eternal Witness & Wall of Omens.. Now i try it and now i am impressed.. not in competition with Witness or Wall, but in addition to others card is super!! My list now plays 2 Couser of Crufix, 4 Witness and 4 Wall of Omen (with a single Reveillark) and i feel good!
That so deck looks soooooo fun to play!!!
jeff is such a cool guy. he lives in our area, and at scg chicago, he asked me how i was doing (i'm thirteen). he somehow knew my name! i love this guy.
Yes!!! Jeff hoogland!!! He's like on my top 5 mtg players
Pro players should unionize? Professor, are you trying to alienate Wizards?
+Adrian Camilleri My loyalty is to the people first and foremost. UNIONIZE!
+Tolarian Community College Good answer. However, you're an English professor so I'd have expected at least a paragraph or two in response so I'll have to deduct a few points. Overall? I'd give that an A-
One does one's best. In addition, of course, I'm a huge fan of Brian so any chance to tickle his ribs is a chance worth taking.
+Tolarian Community College That's excellent!
haha haha haha haha....
The fuck? Was just thinking about building this deck and was about to search for deck techs when I see you just uploaded this video. You are starting to scare me Prof.
PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE FOR MODERN. love yah man
This was soooo awesome, I need to build this deck...plus the kids were great haha
Man, if it wasn't more expensive than a house, I think that this would be the Modern deck for me!
If I can buy a house for 400-500 dollars, let me know where.
+minun73 You could probably buy a recreation of Jason Vorhees shack for that price in the middle of the woods somewhere.
I'd rather have kiki chord than be a murder victim XD
I'm watching this in 2021 and BOY let me tell you. This aged WELL
I would love to see some casual gimmicky decks like seeing you try to make a deck that uses mindstormcrown or null profusion
Professor, I have not seen any review on Ultimate Guard playmat, nor their standard deck cases. So, please...?
I absolutely love your Modern deck videos.
Have you considered doing one on the fairly recent addition to modern using Knight of the Reliquary and Retreat to Coralhelm? It looks like it's predominantly being called "Knightfall". Let's see some Bant videos! :-)
interesting deck, love to see it in action
+John Kravich you can find links to a variety of game play videos in this video's description.
+Jeff Hoogland always more fun to see in person and to see the interactions and reactions between players
John Kravich some of the game play videos are recorded paper magic :)
What about leyline of sanctity in the sideboard? Its another great card against burn and will keep you safe from other potential spells that will target you.
hey professor! What about a legacy food chain dech tech? If i remember right, on twitch once you said you would have upload that video.
+Tommaso Paoli Working on it!
I love how you're reaching out to pros for deck tech videos like this Brian.
It just sucks Hoogles is a terrible actor. lol
Would you consider Bring to Light for more ways to get your combo pieces or needed cards on time? Or is the sorcery speed just a no go?
+Faroth26 it is really pretty clunky and makes your mana base a lot worse. It is not worth it from the testing I've done.

+The Comedy Bros. I suppose it's because Balooth doesn't die to Bolt.
Professor, could you perhaps make a bloopers video for this video? That would be so funny and cute!!
This reminds me a little of birthing pod. You can run 1 copy of a whole bunch of utility creatures, cuz you never need to worry about drawing the right one.
hope for a great vid!
would zealous conscripts be good in this deck as a 1 of as an alternate wincon/steal affect?
Noob question here but how is Restoration Angel better over other possible pieces such as Sky Hussar?
Tempest and a Computer Not that much of a noob question. This is a combo deck, which aims to kill your opponent in a single turn. While Sky Hussar is stronger if you are only wanting to draw, it does not allow for the combo finish which this deck is based on.
MattDGallup97 I don't understand, Sky Hussar can kill instantly as well.
Because it costs more and is much less versatile.
Because Sky Hussar doesn't save your other guys from removal.
I want all the magic cards full art so badly!
I played against a really wonky brew that was similar to this at GP Charlotte. I couldn't figure out what the point was, since he just kept blinking the walls and never drew the combo over two games.
Now I get it (I hope this was his wincon).

We have a dedicated kikichord deck player at my lgs. always interesting to play against him.
The funny thing is, I didn't know the name of Jeff or the Professor's kid, so I initially thought he was getting deck help from his little son.
"Such as infect and splinter twin"
R.I.P. Splinter Twin
+Tolarian Community College While I do like the function of Worship as an enchantment, have you ever thought about Angel's Grace as a possible replacement?
The links don’t work :(
Great video!
+Sylvius Leonard More modern deck techs please!
lol never thought i'd see the hoogles in one of your videos XD.
Assuming it's a card, what is the name of the card in the background on 9:34?
So Child of Alara, Dragon Hatchling, and Birds of Paradise? We could call it KidzBOP
Doesn't Kiki-jiki have summoning sickness when he enters the battlefield and comes back from exile?
Kiki-Jiki has haste.
All the cute kids here it's too much cuteness. Love Jeff been a fan of his
Building this. It's kind of like a cross between the old birthing pod deck and splinter twin combo.
+Ryan Barnes It's very powerful and doesn't have any awful matchups, I do recommend it if you can spare the money. very fun to play also.
What's the image at 4:30 from? Looks like a magic card but I'm not familiar with what it is from.
+Valthek. l. Ayumi, the Last Visitor
+Valthek. l. - It's Ayumi, the Last Visitor
the only creature ever to have Legendary Landwalk.
"DADDY!!..... no, I don't want to go outside" BEST KID EVER LMAOOOO
the kids! oh such fun
but the kids!
that was adorable
Mtg dads for the win
I wish The Meadery's website would go back up...
And here I am, 6 years later, commenting on this video and wanting to build this instead of Yawgmoth combo.
Unbelievable; I faced this the other day.
Awwww, mini professor is so cute
Do an update video on this deck.
umm not to sound like a nood or anything but how would bring to light be in this deck?
+DeanGuitarsForLife! the fact that it is a sorcery makes it feel more clunky than Chord even though it costs less mana some of the time. It also force you to stress the mana base more which causes life loss and not being able to cast spells consistently.
Why don't you pay Fauna Shaman instead of chord of calling?
chord puts it into play. fauna shaman is a removal magnet and it only puts the creature into your hand
Celestial Purge might be good in the mirror, too. Kiki is a red permanent, after all.
Can you make a video for modern abzan midrange? :)
Actual deck tech starts at 2:52 if you want to skip to that
how much does it cost though??? go with an average cost.
omg your son is ADORABLE
What do u do if someone ghostly prisons you?
+magicmax tap tap concede :D
+Jonathan Winer haha lol i get that joke
+magicmax generally speaking you never want to board out the Pridemage against white decks in case they have something like this.
+Jeff Hoogland oh yeah i forgot about Qasali Pridemage, ok yah thats a good answer to ghostly prison.
+magicmax also reclamation sage
Quick question for Jeff: Why not play bolts when u play red?
WhaleWarrior24 Because Path is better removal.
Links for the deck list are not working.
Can you make a deck tech for Naya zoo?
I agree. I agree with people throwing away burn decks and play better decks.
Hey professor you should do a video on the website "untap.in" it's a really cool way to test decks against other people or play without having to spend money.
The link to the deck list isn't working
I personally like reclamation sage a lot more than quasali pridemage. Blinking the sage with resto angel wins games against bogles and other enchantment-based decks. The fact that you can't blink quasali pridemage is a big turnoff for me.

no vexing shusher?
How to have fun at Magic:The Gathering? Play Vintage, the best format.
What is the art at 4:35?
I prefer using a much easier infinite token combo: Two flamerush riders! Attack with both, they copy each other, the copies, copy each other etc
Flamerush Rider triggers when it attacks, when you declare an attack with it to be more specific, and because the tokens enter the battlefield already tapped and attacking you never declared an attack with them, and therefore their abilities do not trigger.
A Norn's Annex that resolves and is protected will shut this down.
The baby was so cute
How did I miss this?
this deck looks awfully similar to birthing pod
+THE BATLORD Well... It kind of is.
+THE BATLORD It's based on kiki pod, so yes. It's a post-ban version of the deck that works in very similar ways.
how much lower is the powerlevel?
+THE BATLORD can't really say because I didn't play the deck before pod ban. you could say pod is a better card than pod and be somewhat right, but they do different things, and both decks are good. Kiki chord feels very powerful in my meta.
+THE BATLORD pod is a better card than chord *
1:57 apply water to burnt area.
I have played against Jeff pioliting kiki chord being the one of the first pros I have played against I was disappointed in the way he acted during our match especially being a returning player to the game
