I played this version when I was like 8 years old and this has been one of the most confusing experiences I've had in my entire life. Makes me appreciate LoD much, much more because of all the quality of life stuff

Yup, familiar. I mistakenly bought a copy of the original Diablo 2 when there was a box that says "diablo 2 battle chest" beside it on the shelf. And with how expensive going online through dial up was, I played single player OG D2 true and through. With no internet connection, I didn't know there was a thing called patching and official updates. Great times :P

1.0 is how i played Diablo 2 for a whole year until LoD came out. What's funny is that I even had internet (shitty dial-up but still), but the idea that games do need patches from time to time rarely crossed my mind, although I remember that I did download patches back then for Fallout 2 (since it was barely playable in its' vanilla state) and Theme Hospital, but not Diablo 2 for some reason.
I remember playing 1.01 version. Great times. I was very excited to discover all this little features. Mostly played for a storyline. So stopped after defeating normal. When I went nighmare after defeating Diablo on normal, some fallen beat sh..t out of me 😜
I remember in these early versions on this game I loved the poison shrine. You could pick one potion at the time by manually dragging it to your inventory and later rapair them one by one at Charsi and sell with much profit.
Soooo, last time you played 1.0 it made me wanna try it and I found this thing called D2 Cactus, it basically a launcher for managing multiple game versions of D2 and comes with the data files for most major patches including 1.0. Makes it really easy to play and switch between other versions without having a million different installs and shortcuts.
Highly recommend this for anyone looking to play old patches. Can find it on github and there is an instructions video on UA-cam by creator... feared bliss I believe is his name
Very cool! It actually looks that 1.0 is more about playing the game: go to the locations, kill the monsters, wait for decent drops, have limited resources and more risks to be stuck on some point in the walkthrough. Don't have the OP runewords and uniques. Do not have an option to easily buy as many scrolls and potions as you want. It's much closer to the hard game than the modern 1.13+ versions.
I had an urge to see what D2 was like at it's launch, a nostalgia trip for me. I wondered why it took me forever to to get through the game. I originally thought it was because I took my time.... as it turned out the game was just punishing. I played a Necro summon build (with some bone spear action) and it felt like weeks-months to get to Hell diff. My Dad played Barbarian and he took even more time than I did (and he had the computer access all week, I only had it on Sat/Sun XD). I know this comment is on an older video but damn this brings me back :)
Feel so old that I was actually able to play this. When expansion came and we can actually get mana potion in shops was magical. I also remember that before you can laek on a bone spear which was my fav build.
@@guigomez3441 i personally prefer more difficult games. i dont mind dying 100 times and farming for hours to get a better equip to progress. i like doing all side quests i can. i enjoy to struggle. Most of the games now are too easy and too fast paced.
@@LednacekZ just farming i dont like a lot, but difficulty for killing things etc its cool. I play D2 with hero editor adding me malus like -200% all res, -% experience, gold, AR etc... Like this its way closer to d2 1.0 with all items and features from LOD 1.14 ^_^

Most of my playtime was 1.0 (ish) sometime around middle school. I recently got back into D2 and I was confused when people mentioned respecing. That would have been a game changer.
Does that version has the blood golem + iron maiden bug that made you near invincible? I think that would be an amazing build! Add some amplified CE into the mix. Would love to try this, not sure how to play 1.0.
Cactus lets you play all versions without having to mount a disc. It copies the necessary files every time you change versions, so it might be a good idea to make a fresh install just for that so you don't have the issue I have where you might forget you played 1.06 and plugy won't work until you start cactus and load a more recent version and then quit out of that game before starting plugy again. It's quite a hassle that I could've prevented using my brain. And I could fix it, and I'm too lazy :p
Pre LOD ideal gear would be either frostburns or mage fists, either 2 soj or 1 and a good res ring, a good rare skill amulet, hope for some tri res boots, and heavenly garb unless they wanted to pump str and get silks of the victor or a good rare chaos armor, and tarn helm, alot of sorcs would use umes wand for the fcr, some used spectral shard or a +2 20 fcr staff, if wand or shard wall of eyeless would be the shield. id ussually get my energy up around 50-80 str around 50-60 for gear maybe a plated belt with good res, dex left at base and the rest to life. the mana regen works best when you have more the more you had the faster it seemed to go, so id have a few to warmth but not too much and wouldnt have trouble later once you get the gear.

I used to play a lot of 1.0, not a lot of LOS and beyond, so when I was watching your guide videos from last year I thought "was I really that wrong putting all those points in energy and warmth?" Guess a lot more has changed since 1.0 then is immediately obvious. Thematically I like it a lot more that a sorc has to invest in mana over life, barbs in strength etc. I remember Travincal being an absolute nightmare with my barb. All that lightening, all that trouble getting to enemies. I think I switched from frenzy to concentrate at that point, because jump-attacking with a great-weapon was really useful there, as was the whole of concentrate. It's so much easier being a frenzy barb nowadays.
when having Serena next to WP it would be propably better to clear her temple. her bosspack is quite large, it can even spawn another pack, that gives more experience than 2times more flayers (or at least same by in two times less time spent). montypes in Ruined Temple gives more exp per monster
I was 8 when I played Diablo 2 and I can clearly remember those damn lightning flashes and I never made it past Act 2. Next time I played it I was already 14 and completed up until Hell Act 3 with Summon Necro then I stopped again. I only managed to finish the game upto hell in my early 20s. 😭

Yup 1.0 WW Barb was 24 FRAMES PER SECOND ATTACK AND YOU WERE INVICIBLE WHILE USING IT. 1.0 BARB is the most overpowered character in ALL ARPG HISTORY IMO.
I'm sad that I never got to play this version but always did want to Really wish I got to play it when it was actually relevant but I started D2 in 2001 or 2002 when LoD was already out
I wonder if the original team would be disappointed with how the game is now? It definitely used to be more difficult. For some good reasons and some not. I think synergies and respecing is a very good addition. Iron Maiden was stupid and I’m glad it was removed. It should have been a set amount of damage like 20 in normal, 50 in nightmare and 100 in hell. Not 1 hit instant death.
this version give sense to everything, like shrines and some spells, cant believe they modified the game to make it that easier, for nowadays kids maybe... This version with all features and items of last version and additionnal balance would be great! (and last graphics from resurected why not..)
Those patches are soo tough. Even at level 30, Frozen Orb is bugged in a way that you have to avoid the orb going through the monsters or else it does no damage. And at level 20, it costs 63 mana. So your sorc will be pretty bad during the whole game. You'll likely finish hell at high 30s or low 40s and be severely underpowered due to low health and the bugged AR from monsters that pretty much gives them 95% chance to hit. I'm pretty sure the best class to clear the game quickly is the Barb in pre-LoD patches, using WW with Pikes since Lances can't drop until patch 1.04 and ED% is bugged to not work on 2H maces and Swords IIRC.
Because it was the first version I played, with Diablo as final boss, so it is difficult to say what version is better one. The old big resolution lets you see stuff and details in the buildings and other designs, but even though fast enemies entering the tiny screen can be a problem, the damage you get is minimal, and the black souls from Act 3 do not give you any nightmares with their lightning damage.

PS doesn't the D2 remaster look like the absolute best possible way to remake a game? I just, (and doing it even now) whit sorceres just buy long bow whit sockets, put some gems in it, perfectly fine till lvl18.... no problem whit mana early. Also lvl 24-30 are plain pain in 1.0

I hope the community makes a "revert to 1.0" mod for D2R. New players need to be able to experience the joy / pain of the original game.
I think D2 classic in its latest patch should be enough for most people. 1.0 is just interesting because of nostalgic feelings.
I wish there would be an option to play an 1.06b classic equivalent on D2R, and a way to play 1.09d in LoD D2R

I played D2 - 1.0 as Necro and I remember how easy it was with revive skill. Extreme survivability and almost zero mana cost xD

Enchant makes *alot* more sense in a context where a sorceress could run out of mana potions and couldn’t buy more.
Finaly some 1.0 action ^^ played this some time ago. You have to repair items before selling to get full price :p
Now im currently playing that mod that allows 45x mobs. Wondering could that work with 1.0 -_-

did you know you can hear the npcs footseps. and they differ on what they walk, like wood or stone.
Most fun char of 1.0 version is WW Barb, try it, killing everything with incredible 24 frames per second attack.

Static is great in 1.0 - no immunities(tbh there was no immunities through all 1.00-1.06), no cap on hell, best skill in the game
I just, (and doing it even now) whit sorceres just buy long bow whit sockets, put some gems in it, perfectly fine till lvl18.... no problem whit mana early. Also lvl 24-30 are plain pain in 1.0
