Paul Simon: Hey, I wrote this song that I don't think a human could sing.
Art Garfunkel: Hold my beer.
A lot of people cried on this song.....everyone has different reasons......it still makes people cry.....Simon & Garfunkel are Folk Rock.....
That song uplifted and ‘relaxed’ a bunch of us who went through the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, the assassinations, the burning cities, the upheavals. It took us all like it took you and soothed some of the pain.
Art Garfunkel has always had one of the purest, most beautiful male voices in music. Paul Simon doesn't appear in this video. However, he sang harmonies on the 1970 release of this hit song, which became the #1 song of 1970.
@ShariSez1 Everyone knows Paul wrote it, you are about 50 years too late.
Many here have commented about how much better the studio version is - the full orchestration and the harmony Simon brings in the final verse. But also a mistake in this version by Garfunkel. Instead of "I will lay me down" in the 2nd chorus, he sings "I will ease your mind' which he used again in the last chorus. Well, it sometimes happens in live performances.
*~ Aretha Franklin also recorded this; in 1971, her cover reached #6 on the Billboard Top 100; #1 on the R&B chart ~*
Art just sounds like an angel telling you "it will be all right" - man, as a depressive, I love this song, because it forces me to think about the people who care about me and reminds me to reach out to them.
If you’re feeling down, try some Home Free, maybe How Great Thou Art or Everything Will Be Okay. They always make me feel better. The harmonies are incredible.
Art Garfunkel, one of the purest tenor voices ever. Song moves me every time. The album version is also great.
When Art Garfunkel opens his mouth - I stop what I'm doing. Soooo beautiful.
Artie's voice has always been called angelic. You seriously need to listen to the original studio version on your own. It's very emotional and Paul joins him for a bit later in the song. Paul wrote most of the songs and they usually sing as a duo but he wanted Art to sing this and Art has said it was one of the best gifts he's ever received. I think we all feel that way.
I love so much how he carries this song even at his age in this performance--still hitting so many of the notes and altering as needed. Just as brilliant as the younger recording.
Your genuine heartfelt reaction was caused by Art Garfunkel's perfect vocal performance of a beautifully written song by Paul Simon. There is no other explanation.
been a favorite since 1970 , absolutely beautiful song ! hits you in the feels !
Art Garfunkel has always had such a beautiful voice
Art is gone with the wind. But back in the day...nobody could compare
Te studio version has a beautiful bridge between the second and third verses, and Paul Simon actually adds his vocals in the third verse.
It was so good to see young Garfunkel at his best.
My favorite song ever. It’s simply about friendship and family and about self-sacrifice.
"The Sound of Silence" and "The Boxer" are next as you begin your long road down the rabbit hole that is Paul Simon, both with and without Art Garfunkel.
RICHARD TEE on keys. One of the greatest studio keyboardists of all time. He played on "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel, "Tell Her About It" by Billy Joel, "Gone At Last" and "Slip Slidin' Away" by Paul Simon, and "Just The Two of Us" by Grover Washington Jr. feat. Bill Withers.
Magic duo. Was luck enough to see them at Wembley when they reformed, have a listen to "Sound of Silence" or "The Boxer" by them as well
That's Art Garfunkel. He was performing live in front of 500k people in sheep meadow in Central Park in 1980. The album version is a duet w paul Simon who wrote the lyrics and music. It's one of the most beautiful and famous ballads of the 2nd half of the 20th century.
Studio recording is the best version. The one everyone remembers.
Always classy. Some S&G Highlights - Sound of Silence (Simon wrote it), Scarborough Fair, Mrs. Robinson, the Boxer, Cecelia, Feelin' Groovy.
Thank you kind sir, you have a tender soul! If you hear this song and are not moved by it,you need to re evaluate your life! Fantastic!
When this album came out I was 9 yrs old, & REALLY LOVED Bridge over Troubled Water, also The Boxer. Many many of their songs are so excellent too! xx
The studio version is better in some ways (harmonies yes, ending no IMO) but what I really like about this version is watching this kind of random looking dude stand there with his hands in his pockets in front of a basic mike, no effects, live in front of thousands of people and just kill the vocal. No substitute for talent.
NM Gal ~ Well said my friend!
100s of thousands.
Half a million people actually. And yes, there is something surreal about his casual stance contrasted with knocking it out of the park in front of so many people.
Art is awesome! He does stand so casually with his hands in his pockets. I believe he doesn't know what to do with his hands. Noone can sing this any better!
I was a young 25-year-old when this song was released. Fifty years later it still blows me away. It has more than stood the test of time.
Simon and Garfunkel is a huge rabbit hole to go down. So many great songs to hear!
There are few songs that bring me to tears, but this does it every time!
It's a beautiful song, isn't it? Their catalog is so deep with so many great songs. Paul Simon put out incredible songs after they split. Watch the movie The Graduate. The entire soundtrack is S&G.
I addition to Sound of Silence and The Boxer, I would recommend “America” and “Homeward Bound”, they are both beautiful songs & there is an optimism & innocence to those song that’s chokes me up.
good reaction. I prefer the original version, though, with both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel singing. Don't get me wrong, I really like Art's singing, but the harmonies of the duo are outstanding. BTW, it is pronounced "sigh-mon", not "see-mone".
You know what’s funny. Right after I shot the video I thought to myself did I say see-mone. It’s a habit from my buddies at work and Spanish lol
Powerful song. Beautiful ❤
Art Garfunkel in his solo career did a cover of I only have eyes for you that is phenomenal… Give it a listen, you will not regret it!!!
Be sure to listen to the studio version as well - great production, and sounds you can't easily replicate in a concert setting
The song is pure magic, it has that impact on everyone.
The great Billy Preston on the keyboard and the brilliant Art Garfunkel, so great, so humble! Thank you for sharing!
Eer no!
Art is one singing beautifully!

Nice reaction, thanks! 👍☺️
This might be one of my top 10 songs of all time. I was actually at this concert. I was a freshman in high school. It was in september and there were around 500,00 people in central park. It was largest concert in history at the time, but it was my first show. It was an all day event as we arrived about 7 hour earlier to get a decent seat. Even with that, there probably still 50k people in front of us who had camped out all night. Lots of people in their 20's and 30's. Lots of alcohol and drugs being using freely. It was amazing.
Paul Simon "Graceland", "You can call me Al", "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"
The African concert of the album in Harare is fantastic.
It is a perfect 10. Art Garfunkel’s voice is incredible. It has the power and clarity to make your emotions bubble over the top, just like it did with you. Thanks. This was a great video and reaction!!!!
It’s actually better (in my opinion) when Paul Simon comes in with his great harmonies. Still, it WAS an amazing performance!
So much in the spiritual/gospel tradition! I feel like Jesus is singing this to us.
Classic and masterful!
Great poetry rendered by a beautiful voice, what's not to get?
You have to watch more songs from this exact show
One of those few songs where the studio/album version is better than anything done live.
Check out their song. The Boxer
That's church, and the piano player is dynamite. good reaction, please do "The Boxer", "Sounds of Silence" thanks.
Billy Preston on keyboard?
Incredible performance, but the studio version is more powerful and emotional. Please explore further!!!!!!
Velvety and soft vocals. Beautiful !
Love Simon and Garfunkel since the 70's, just realized that singer ( Art Garfunkel) is Tom Brady With a perm 3:30 I'm out
LOL
Just such a wonderful piece of vocal art. 58 years of listening, special every listen the classics. Cheers
This way a historic show , especially since it was their last time performing as Simon & Garfunkel
I enjoyed the studio version much better as it has more texture and vibrance, having said that, I liked the layed back approach of Art Garfunkel on the live version. The recorded version of 'The Boxer' is enhanced by a powerful orchestra which complements the lyrics of the song. I would love to know what your opinion is the live verses recorded versions of the afore mentioned songs.
My favorite song💕
Nice reaction. You'll like the studio version as much if not more
Secular gospel of the highest order. Doesn't matter how many times I hear it, it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. See what the keys player (got a fine voice too) brings to this live Paul Simon performance. Also features Steve Gadd on drums, Tony Levin on bass, and Eric Gale on guitar. Funky as fuck... ua-cam.com/video/9mXlzi5Ntys/v-deo.html
This is a TEAR JERKER!!!! It's doesn't matter if it's them or Aretha Franklin, this just makes me cry! ❤❤❤😢😢
It doesn't matter what the circumstances, this song can make grown men cry. No need for an explanation. IMO the studio version is better (yes it's possible!), but this is still spectacular. S&G had a string of amazing hits through the 1960s, almost all written by guitarist Paul Simon, all perfectly suited for the soaring angelic voice of Art Garfunkel - and their harmonies are astonishing. Try "The only living boy in New York", "The boxer", and "Sound of silence".
If this impressed you, you must listen to the original. That vocal blow this one away. I think it was a once-in-a-lifetime Confluence of how his voice was that day and Studio they were using Etc. I read that some of the technicians were in tears. Listen to the studio version from the record. You won't be sorry.
Check out "The Boxer" and "Sounds of Silence"
This song was made for Garfunkel voice !!!
This song was the first song I heard on the self made Transistor radio kit I built and it made me cry then as it still does. Fifty years later. The B-side of the single was a very upbeat song called "Keep the customer Satisfied".
Excellent song and very emotional.....the theme and message is very deep filled with hope and love. It gets to the heart. Happy you like it.
This is the only worth while version of this song. Elvis covers it and no one does them justice. Love this duo
Now you should react to the original studio version of this song.
Studio version is much, much, much better.
You should check out the version So Hyang did. It will knock your socks off.
Top 5 live performances
Ditto to those who have suggested The Boxer and Sound of Silence. Studio version of Troubled Water allows you to appreciate the interplay of Art and Paul's voices.
Wait'll you hear the original studio version!
So many great songs with this duo and so many that Paul Simon did after the duo broke up.
Gospel
GARFUNKLES voice is amazing. Simon wrote the song and music....but GARFUNKLE sang it
I was there !!!
Loving your channel and your reactions. You should try to check out Elton John live (from the 70s when he was in his prime, haha.) Or Paul McCartney, U2, Genesis. All of them are awesome live performers.
Again with the concert footage. No studio versions unless there's an attention-getting hit video! Thumbs up for the band, anyhow.
This song reminds you of all the good intentions in the world...
Ignore my name mispronunciation. Simone lol It's a habit of saying. I instantly thought of it when I saw simon
Try their original version of Sounds of Silence then contrast that with the Disturbed version of the same song. It's a testament to a good song when other artists can reinterpret it over and over.
Which one? Most people think of the original as being the one with the drums and such but it isn't. Original was on Wednesday morning 3 a.m. and there were no drums or electric guitars.
@@wendylynn7058 You are absolutely correct. The original version was acoustic. I was referring to the remixed version with drums that became such a hit single.
Listen to the studio version as it is more amazing.
☮️💙💙💙
Believe it or not, the piano playing in the original studio version was way more powerful and more sweetly emotional.
The instrumentation overall here is relatively weak. Art Garfunkel, though, is still astonishingly great.
Listen to the original, is what I am urging you to do.
Any idea how many times this song has hit no 1
You should listen to The Boxer by this duo. It's as good as this.
Chod you have to check out the studio version
I'm wearing my Chiefs hat right now! Love your channel!
No. The studio version. That’s what you need to react to. Please.
I love the melancholy sound of Simon & Garfunkel's original "Sound of Silence," but I hate Disturbed's cover of it for changing it to an angry sound, and I resent that so many people think Disturbed's version is the original. I won't listen to Disturbed any more - it disturbs me too much.
Ugh - thank you! I get so aggravated when I hear people talk about that version in reverent tones. I find melodramatic and over done, with every line sung as if it were the climax of the piece. It completely diminishes the effect. I actually had someone get mad at me when I told them that I didn't care for it and why. Since I don't have a background in music education I can't put it the way someone who does would; hope you know what I'm trying to say.
Another song we need to bring out of the attic because it's today's truth.
And no auto tune back then.
SIMON & GARFUNKLE duets
• Sound of Silence
• Hello, Darkness, My Old Friend
• The Boxer
"Hello darkness, my old friend" is the first line of Sound of Silence
NO! You have to listen to the ALBUM version! Nothing touches that!
You’ve got to check out GHOST BC! Here is their song, RITIUAL: ua-cam.com/video/6l2FEHr_Yzg/v-deo.html. Prepared to be amazed and what Ghost BC fans call...getting ghosted! These guys are all in costume, kinda like KISS but even better. You’ll love it. ENJOY! 👻😎😈👍🏻 RIP EDDIE VAN HALEN 😔💕
The studio version is much more pure
Please react to "Bright Eyes", an Art Garfunkel solo song [written by Mike Batt].
I know you appreciate a beautiful voice and a great song Please check out Barbra Streisand "Evergreen", "Memories", "People" and "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" I REALLY think you will enjoy them
Wow, I didn't realize you are playing a solo version of this song. Art Garfunkel, the one in the video, had the angelic voice. Paul Simon wrote and arranged everything they did and has a good voice, but not as good as Art's.
