  • A BBC panel discussion in 1997 about Scotland v England football rivalry in the 1930's. William Griffin was a 15 year old schoolboy who attended the famous 1937 match and shared amazing recollections with Sir Stanley Matthews, one of his boyhood football heroes, described as a true English gentleman.
Also interviewed were Russel Galbraith, the author of the Hampden Story and Jed O'Brian, Project Director of the Scottish Football Association's Museum Trust.

Thanks for the upload, I'm English but Hampden really was something else in those days. Remarkable to think that when the modern Hampden Park opened in 1903 three of the biggest stadiums in the world were in Glasgow with Celtic Park, Ibrox and of course Hampden Park. Capacity wise Hampden now is nowhere near what it was, even though it remained a terraced stadium until the early to mid 90s, it wasn't the same atmosphere wise from around the 70s onwards because of the continual decrease in capacity with it being less than 100,000 by that stage.

Glad you enjoyed the video, my Dad always described the Hampden roar as something he would never forget. "Earthshaking"

Stan Matthews big regret was that he retired too early deciding to pack in after playing in the old Division 1 at 50.
