If you like FOOTBALL you NEED to see this! Hampden Park, Hampden Park & Hampden Park

- In this video I visited Hampden Park, Hampden Park and Hampden Park.
There are three sites in Glasgow that have at one time or another had a stadium named Hampden Park on them. Scotland play their football there, Queen's Park have played at them all and they've also hosted numerous Scottish Cup finals.
The first Hampden Park is at the site where international football was born!

Great vid. I did the same exploration of the Hampdens in 2008 - a fascinating history and an easily walkable tour. A fabulous footie museum at Hampden too.
Thanks very much! Yeah the Hampden story is an incredible one. I've never been to the museum, the SFA have kept it shut since March 2020 with no signs of reopening this year. Utter joke!
What a brilliant story, never knew the Scots played such an important story in football.
Yeah, its scotland and england who created the game we all know and love!
I was lucky enough to watch England play at the old Hampden Park before it was knocked down. Amazing stadium built to hold 150,000. The new ground is so underwhelming in comparison......it looks identical to dozens of other grounds and only holds 52000 and that's supposed to be progress!
Would love to have seen it back in the day!
@@FootyAdventures It was a very impressive sight. I went in 1988 or 89 (can't remember exactly, but England won!) When you look at photos or videos of the old Hampden with 130,000+ inside you can clearly see the fans are not packed in like sardines but still have plenty of room. It really was vast.
It was the noise which stood out for me from the old ground.
Modern journalists/commentators/pundits talk about the ‘Hampden Roar’ as if it were as made up as Braveheart, but when the old stadium had 100,000+ inside it literally did...well, roar.
The noise on a big match could be incredible.
@@scottishbikerseumas5317 I liked the thumping sounds from the old stands. Hampden didn't have the Phil Spector acoustics of modern stadiums but it was a thunderous sound that came from it.
Great video. I've lived less than 2 miles from here most of my life and I never really knew about this!! I've been on Third Lanark's pitch when I was a kid when the ground had shut down but I never realised the bowling club was the site of the old Hampden!
Go check it out when you get a chance! Only over the road from cathkin
@@FootyAdventures Yeah, I drive past it every other day lol. These videos of yours are great. History is such an important part of football. A lot of the old stadiums in UK have been demolished and replaced with these identikit plastic arenas as you know. I really don't like those, they lack character. Have you been to Starks Park Kirkcaldy where Raith Rovers have played since 1891? The ground isn't completely original, but the unusual L-shaped main stand that houses the players dressing facilities and the supporters lounge was designed by the renowned Grandstand architect Archibald Leitch and was built with part funding from the sale of Alex James to Preston North End in 1925. I think that would be a real interesting one.
I grew up quite near Hamden 1 & 2 and have played football at Cathkin Park a few times.
You can feel the history in the place.
Cool video bro 👍
Nice! And thank you!
Another great video. Have had the opportunity of visiting Hampden for a SNT friendly but was unaware at the time of the significance of the park and the area. As you pointed out, while England is credited with the birth of football, many don't realize that it was the Scots who influenced the idea of passing and running with the ball. Thanks again!
Cheers for watching!
Another great vid Sam. Queen's Park were actually amateur until recently, not semi-pro. They were well known as the only amateur team in the SPFL.
Oh right I didn't realise! Thanks again for watching
@@FootyAdventures Their motto was the Latin phrase, Ludere causa Ludendi, which, translated into English means ‘To play for the sake of playing’
@@FootyAdventures If it wasn't for Queens Park being snotty about professionalism then it would probably have been them who became a huge club rather than Rangers.
Love the history you present of Scottish football. Would love to see the sights and history of Renton FC and Vale of Leven, Tontine park and Millburn park respectively. You're work is much appreciated. Cheers!
Thank you! I'm getting a lot of requests for Vale of Leven!
Cathkin Park is a great wee place. I always go for my lunchtime walks there. Cracking video once again.
Thanks 👍 and yeah love a bit of Cathkin!
Brilliant ending too this video. I can just feel the goosebumps.

Honestly hand on heart I feel this is buy far the best You Tube
Channel video ever & certainly that I have ever watched & I am subscribed to many You Tube Channels myself.
I watch Coppa 90 , Away Days but this is way better than any content they have ever produced you can tell you did a lot of research for this video in particular.
I look forward to your next video Sam.
We have a glorious history in Scotland when it comes to football I just hope our football in Scotland has a glorious future aswell earlier this afternoon I found out there are rumours of financial problems at Morton with David Hopkin stepping down as manager amid rumours of financial problems at the club & we know financial mismanagement is suspected at Saint Mirren with an Independent auditor being brought in to go though the accounts it just makes me censured how financialy healthy many of our club in Scotland are behind the seens we also know Celtic have lot 16 million due to the Pandemic & Rangers 17 million if I remmber right with no tickets Money coming in though the gates aswell as The T.V rights money being nowhere near what it is in England with The Premier League I am truly censured some of our biggest clubs is Scotland could go under early in the new year.
Keep Safe Sam.
Cheers Alan, really appreciate that. I know you enjoy my videos, but so glad you liked this one over most others. I really enjoyed filming this today, I love stories like this one myself. Yeah I saw the news on St Mirren. Didn't know about Morton but I'll check it out. It's a shame when clubs go under so to speak, but there's always good willing clubs in the lower divisions ready to step up!
Wow fantastic video. Keep them coming and keep safe
Cheers Mick and will do!
Love your enthusiasm for Scottish football. Cathkin Park should be protected the way historical sites are. It’s just fading away, such a shame.
So true!
@@FootyAdventures is there any chance you can cover MUSSELBURGH ATHLETIC and there ground olivebank stadium it's in market street musselburgh.
Thank you. Ewan mclay.
Lords Cricket Ground has a similar history to the Hampdens.
Thomas Lords first ground hosting some historic early matches.
Eton v Harrow have been playing annually since 1805. MCC had a similar significance in the game to Queens Park. Codifying
the rules, etc. There were two Lords grounds at one point, the first went due to a rent dispute, facilities moved to site two, then a canal was built through the ground so the current site was developed.
Ah cool good to know! Cheers!
Ur some boy! What a cracking adventure this vid is ♥️👍
Glad you enjoyed it! New video just went live for more footy adventures :)
If you wanna trace Jinky back to his routes, best to visit his hometown of Viewpark east of Glasgow. It has a statue in his honour and is also home to Thorniewood United FC which is a nice wee park with tiny terracing where he trained as a boy.
I recommend going to the ground were the first ever international football match was played, Scotland vs England in Patrick!

Wow im so shocked - i actually live on the same street as that bowling club further along across from the park and never knew all this - ive even been in the club house when they had a charity day - thanks for this video it was awesome - i might walk along there later and just stare at it for a little while knowing what i know now - good job i didnt bump into you i think i might have been a bit star struck - thanks again for this amazing video
Nice, glad I could bring it to your attention! Definitely go and check out a few of the sites :)
love all the history in your vlogs, so good.
Amazing to hear :) more coming soon! Thanks for watching
Glasgow Rangers once played a European Cup match at a stadium built in 1807. The ground was comissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte, originally for fake naval battles. The ground could be intentionally flooded.
The Arena Civica in Milan was used between the wars by Inter Milan. AC used it occasionally. Held up to 30k. In 1957 Rangers away tie with AC was switched to the ground due to fog at San Siro. Possibly a late kick off time change as well, as only about 5k went to the game.
It's still used by small rugby and soccer teams.
Access at non match times was reportedly easy.
Good appraisal !! Well presented !!! 🏴⚽️🏴
Thanks! 😃
This is my favourite video on yt right now and your best video ever keep it up I’m enjoying it

Wow, goosebumps seeing all those victories against England then brought down to earth by my Welsh wife for the Welsh victories. Great video and should be available to any historians looking at football origins
Haha! And thanks mate!
The first ever Scotland v england was played at partick cricket ground ,
Yeah true! I visited that very site in a video earlier this year!
ua-cam.com/video/bNQwI_HSrrc/v-deo.html
That's correct. But it wasn't a football stadium, or a ground purposely designed for football matches.
Great video just watch a documentary of Mark Walters and the games involving the old enemies was fascinating. As the Scotland team was captained by a Black player named Andrew Watson if I remember correctly his was also a member off the great Queens Park team of the same era. Love Scottish football and hope to do my own tour one day starting at Fort William. Keep up the good work Sam.
The street in the background with the tenements is called hampden terrace. Named after lord john hampden an warlord that fought in the english civil war. Dont tell the tartan army but that means the national stadium for scotland was named after an english man.
brilliant as always
Thank you! Cheers!

5-1 great result for Scotland, hopefully they can build on this good form.
5-1 what a great score 🇱🇻❤️🇱🇻 at Hampden
Hmm what have I seen at Hampden, St Mirren in three cup finals (two wins), Usain Bolt, Greg Rutherford and three days of Athletics at the commonwealth games, AC/DC Bon Jovi, Ed Sheeran, U2 Will be going to Gerry Cinnamon if it ever happens, 6 or 7 Scotland games. few things. Murrayfield rivals it with Rolling Stones, U2 a fair few Rugby Games and the Scottish Claymores winning the World Bowl :) .
Sounds like some good times!
I've been following the Scottish national team since I was about 12 y.o. since the World cup in . . . .never mind the year.
We started getting live telecasts of the games in around 1985, '86 or so, crackly, hazy vision of poor quality.
But one game had particular interest to me, Scotland Vs. Australia to qualify for Mexico '86.
This is because the captain of Australia had played in high school football with my brother, & had presented me with my first trophy when I was around 10 y.o.
In a T.V. interview he spoke about that game (at the old Hampden) and said something he had never quite experienced & will never forget was the noise of the crowd. He said the volume & the intensity was unbelievable.
The all-seater system is safer, but the atmosphere doesn't quite seem to be the same anymore.
Great video was at the last of the 100k plus games in 1973 the centenary Scottish Cup final sure it was 122,000 ,safety reasons cut all attendances after then
Good video mate
Thanks 👍
I only went to Hampden Once,1974 Scotland v East Germany ,Graeme Souness debut for Scotland. (I live in Australia, otherwise there would be many more visits to Hampden).

It's a suburb of Eastbourne, has its own rail station. It's a confusing line for Scots footy fans, Lewis, Glynde, Berwick, Hampden Park and Eastbourne.
There are two non league footy teams in Eastbourne, one shares it's pitch with cricket sometimes used by Sussex, a rare arrangement these days.
Eastbourne is unusual in that it's biggest sports venue isn't cricket, footy rugby or racing. It's the tennis complex.
Thats awesome
Thank you!
Lovely bit of football history
@@martynmurray8927 Certainly is!
No pitch or posts at Cathkin Park now, I see. There has been on and off, but for some reason the City Council seem to have an aversion to allowing a football pitch there. It was - and would be - simply a park pitch, of course, but I think it would be appropriate for football still to be played there.
Brilliant video btw .
