It's a shame this movie barely made a profit! I've watched it 10 times without tiring. It transports you to a fantastic fantasy world - a ghost of reality.
I've just read an old interview with Thora Birch. She said she put on weight for Ghost World to indicate that Enid 'wasn't happy.' That blows my mind because I have long held the belief that Thora looks more beautiful here than any other actress in any other role. She looks... perfect!
Just re-watched this for the first time in many years....except now it was with my WIFE. I think she could tell how mesmerized I still am by Thora in this movie.
Great movie...under rated...Buscemi is perfect...Birch is too :) a rare American film (smart, funny, subtle, not too fast paced..takes its time...cool :))
Fabian sei Italiano ? i'm very glad to discover so many estimators of this great movie : i really like it, since i saw it many years ago - and i keep on watch it - very simple but so good -
When I saw this for the first time, I never imagined that Scarlett Johansson would be the breakout star. I fully expected it to be Thora Birch. I'm still amazed. She is so much more interesting of an actress.
Thora was already famous before this.. you haven't seen American beauty i take it? .. from what I've read her father basically ruined her career by being a pain in the ass on set and giving her a bad name. Looks like she's making a bit of a comeback though she's in TWD
That art teacher irked me so much in the movie. "We can draw these cartoons that are more... light, and amusing, or we could do something more serious." HRRGH.
Heavens to Enid Coleslaw ! THANKS so much for uploading these documentaries about the making of this marvelous movie - one of my all time favorite films ! What a great script and great cast ! Love it !! :-)
The days before streaming when you could accidentally discover a movie. Stumbled on this movie by accident one night on HBO and fell in love. Same thing happened with Rushmore.
best Clowes quote about working with "Hollywood" to make Ghost-World": “The things that happened [in Hollywood] were all the things you would think of. You think the fiction of Hollywood has to be exaggerated, and it’s just not. I was shocked. I always thought there were really smart people working in Hollywood who were just really cynical, and they knew that the movies they were making were not that good, and they were doing it because they tested well. But mostly it’s a very middlebrow to lowbrow kind of town. And they’re making films that they approve of. "
What the heck ever happened to Thora Birch? I know she put on a lotta weight but so what? Thora needs to come back! And isn't that Teri Garr playing Thora's Dad's girlfriend in this movie?
Yep, that is Teri Garr playing Enid's dad's girlfriend ! And Thora Birch has a new romantic comedy coming our later this year ("The Competition" - opposite Chris Klein). I adore her & her awesome talent !!
Movie start with the Bollywood song jaan pehchaan ho from the movie of gumnaam sung by Great Mohammed Rafi Sahab and composed by Great music duo Shanker Jaikishan.
I can't get on with this film at all. I've tried countless times. I find it dull. Enid is a bore herself. Like, it's so cool to hate on everything?! Scarlett is SO cute in this flick though. So utterly adorable! And Steve Buscemi is always great. But I can't find it in myself to enjoy this film at all. It doesn't register with me for some reason.
GhostWorld is just a weird-subtle film. Also a satire mocking pop culture. The Blues Hammer Band singing about picking cotton, while the old authentic blues artist is ignored etc etc.... It's not supposed to be hilarious gag humor or super dramatic. Enid is supposed to be immature and 'too cool', her closed-mind damages her relationship with the people that love her .... and then her character learns and matures into having an open mind, through her friendship with Seymour. Billy Bob Thornton in Bad Santa is maybe similar in a way, also directed by Zwigoff, but it is more gag humor
@Simon Nielsen - I'm 41. Old enough to have been alive when the grunge thing happened. Remember that? It's a weak ass directionless movie. Enid is NO ONE to aspire to. I find her vapid and vacant. Eventually, you grow out of HATING EVERYTHING.
I think it's exactly the opposite. I just watched it for the first time this week, and I was enamored with Enid/Thora. Scarlett, on the other hand, delivered virtually every line in monotone, and even though she eventually conformed to norms, her attitude was still awful towards Seymour, considering him pathetic up to the end. Enid might be afraid to grow up, but at least she has a personality and sincerely cares about Seymour. To each his own. And despite so many fans buying into the Enid suicide ending, the screenwriters and director themselves said they consciously planned on the bus metaphor being her starting a new life. So, she is growing up.

Typical that it was no commercial succes! Nobody likes ART!

I have a notion to second that emotion ! Well said and well put !
Enid always had me mesmerized. Thora Birch is a beauty, always was

Its really touches a nerve when you have dealt with art teachers.
I’ve watched this movie 30+ times. Easy. Finally got the Criterion edition... worth the 💰💰💰
How’s it a better edition ?
This is one of my favorite movies. I've watched Ghost World well over 50xs!

The days before streaming when you could accidentally discover a movie. Stumbled on this movie by accident one night on HBO and fell in love. Same thing happened with Rushmore.

Jeez scarlett is so young in here!

無盡熱愛這電影
Thora Birch circa 2000 looked the best
Thora Birch is a babe, she was always underrated. It sucks she doesn't get big roles anymore
"The one thing you don't want to do is make another film based on a comic book"
Thora Birch was on this *and* in The Walking Dead hahaha
Love this movie!

Guess because You´re one of the dead flesh ones.
Just not your type of humor, shit happens
