This is the best lesson I've found for this song and you make it so simple. May I ask for a lesson for after midnight especially the intro minor pentatonic pls? Take care
@@aayushshrivastava8216 Hi Aayush, What song or songs would you like to learn from Ritchie Blackmore?, I think he is one of the greatest guitar players ever !
I bought JJ Cale's Naturally in 1972 when it was first released in Australia. And I have quite a few of his albums. Fair Bloody Dinkum I was devastated when he went to the promised land.
I agree everyone should have the Naturally album, most folk will discover they already have most of the songs in their collection already just done by other artists. Outstanding album.
@@dennishunt1590 Same here! I’m from Tulsa, his home town and saw him live at the Caine’s Ballroom around 2004.....it was so awesome! Tons of history at this place! Standing room only (no chairs) and was able to mingle up to the front row and watch 3 or 4 songs....A highlight in my life! I just love all his videos with Eric, who loved him very much! I read that Christine is compiling a volume of music he wrote that was never published and can’t wait for that!
jj cale is if not the most, one of my favourite musicians. I feel he deserves much more praise than he gets, and deserves to be in the limelight. songs like magnolia, are simply pure magic. thank you John Weldon cale.
Brilliant lesson Thom. I've been a J J Cale fan since the early 1970s and you've really grasped the "less is more" philosophy of his playing. Although there is nothing complex about his playing, it's really difficult to get that laid-back groove that he always seems to achieve. You really hit the nail on the head. Would love to see more J J Cale lessons.
I've been playing the 'Skynyrd' version of this song for a couple of decades now in various cover bands in PA....always, Always, ALWAYS fun to play [probably my favorite if you have a really good piano player, and a great front man...which I do!]. It always gets the crowd on their feet. Great lesson GP, you're a very good teacher!!! Thank you sir!! - RT
Love J.J. Cale but LS version w/o a doubt the best, GR solo rockin & BP on piano, the song never sounded better. Got the same ole Blues same way, LS version much better, I like their version better than Clapton because of the slide. With somgs like Cocaine & After Midnight, 4 great great songs!
@@kathyrais574 Well, that's all a matter of opinion :) I'd personally take JJ's version any day over anyone's, but LS's version is definitely great as well! There's just something so light and effortless about JJ's original... the guitar sounds like a breeze...!!!
I loved this. Inspiring, the way you show the basics and then add layers to it. And l loved the clips of JJ and Clapton too. A really interesting, inspiring, instructional video. Most of all it’s encouraging. Made me realise how much that song can be developed. Appreciate JJ Cale even more now. Thanks for this!
I hear JJ since 30 years. When i listen to his music it is like beeing in trance and feel happy. Thanks for sharing this! Great stuff and i will play it for my grandaughter.
Every Mark Knopfler fan would appreciate JJ’s tone on those 2 songs. For the Fancy Dancer he actually said in an interview that he wanted to sound like Knopfler. Some say Mark has been heavily influenced by JJ, now I’m not too sure about that but it’s definitely a shame they never did colaborate, it would probably be a masterpiece
@@stanojkovicm How are you "not too sure" of that?! It's clear like water to me. JJ was doing this kind of fingerpicking before Knopfler... and his songwriting is also a clear influence. Knopfler is a Jedi and JJ's Yoda lmao
@@jas_bataille Correct, all you’ve said. Once Knopfler said in a documentary that he was influenced by ‘50s bluegrass fingerpicking patterns and that he admired Chat Atkins style a lot. In terms of songwritting you are spot on.
That was great. I like how you showed us the simple version, and then built up to the advanced. I have played 12 bar blues for years, but always wanted to know how to sound like JJ. It was that open D that made it!

Really wonderful and classic rock tune. I have said this time and time again, but the best kind of songs to learn are the ones that you can have fun with and really straightforward. Awesome work man!
At last, great explanation & tutorial of this classic tune from the early 70's. Key of F# with the capo was spot on. JJ would play it in E with Clapton live but you nailed it. Love your channel. Keep on keeping on. Don't forget to cover the greatest songwriter our lifetime - Bob Dylan. Lots of material to work with.
Guitar pilgrim - I’ve been meaning to write to you about “shuffle” strumming patterns and this songs is a perfect time to discuss it. MANY players will strum a song like this using a, “down up down up down up” pattern ad nauseam... And that works and is fine SOMETIMES. However, a much better sounding/feeling “shuffle” strumming pattern is to strum it, “ down down down up, down down down up, (e.g. The House is Rockin by Stevie Ray Vaughan). If Stevie employed the standard down up down up strumming pattern exclusively in that song it would lose so much of its feeling , power, and that swing that you only get when Stevie’s in the pocket, shuffling slightly behind the beat. I know that you understand what I’m talking about and am hoping that maybe you can discuss this topic in a future video. If anything it’ll be a good lesson about how sitting right on top of the beat is bad, and learning to get inside the pocket together as a band creates a feeling like nothing else in this world when playing music with people! Ok sorry for the long winded text. Cheers and please keep singing. We are all enjoying hearing you sing more often. You have a great voice! Late.
You always come up with all the best songs. I grew up with this one in the early 70s when in college. Clapton, Cale and King are my idols. Thanks for showing me how to play my all time JJ favorite!
