The early build order will vary greatly based on the situation, you had very good tiles (many 2:2 or better) and rain forest, this would have made a builder virtually worthless for a significant amount of time. However, in a city with poor food/production getting up a pasture, a mine etc would have a lot more value comparatively. The need of early settlers (Always good to get at least 1) would also change depending on how close you are to people and your availability of land, otherwise you can wait for Magnus and early empire. There's also the terrain to consider, forest and hills. A warrior won't be able to do is usual share of scouting so getting a 2nd scout could provide great value.

Thoughts about victory types, tech boosts and such don't really come up.

I'm new so I play at easier AI, I always go for early Tech boost like what you do. But I've won at harder levels too, although it's cutting it close. AI at harder levels are aggressive so I don't use what you mentioned.

For me it is 1 scout, 2 builder 3 slinger 4 traderoute (second city if that one is up). Settlers, not just one, when you have pop 2+ in between the others .
With some luck, villages /barbarian camps, you shoudl be able to buy something cheap. If you buy a trade route or slinger/warrior or even a thrid scout or monument that is a real boost.

@@alex2005z Dont be too scared of barbs. You have a warrior, thats a good start. Add 1 unit (barb or slinger) to that after the monument and you should be fine for the first 40 turns in 90% of your games with standard barb settings. Maybe some games are exceptions, you'll need to learn how to recognise them. The more of the 360degree arc around you is empty land, (as opposed to a CS who keeps the area clean, ocean that doesnt spawn camps, or mountain walls that act as natural protection) the more dangerous it is. If its very dangerous you may need a 3th unit. If a scout has spotted you, you MUST stop him from gettig back to camp. So don't let those few units you have go too far away from home. They are there to scout your expansion spots and kill barb scouts, not to do long distance scouting and meet many civs. You'll do that later.
That said, i certainly dont always start with a monument. If there is amazing improvable land i may very well start with a worker first.
PS: sorry to sound arrogant, but i have played every itteration of civ for 1000's of hours each. Deity exclusively. I know this game. If you disagree it's morely likely there is something to learn for you than for me.

I think the important thing is to be flexible. My general build order is: slinger -> scout and then the rest depends on what's going on around me. If I've found a barbarian camp by the time I've completed my scout, I'll make another slinger and go hunt it down with my warrior. Or if I'm on a large continent (based on my initial game settings), I'll make another scout. If I found an awesome second city location, I'll make a settler to snatch it up. And sometimes - rarely - I'll make a monument third (eg. if I've determined by this point, from the first few turns of scouting, that I have the continent to myself so I can just focus on infrastructure).
My general rule about my first worker is, never build one if you don't have enough citizens to work three tiles or the tech to use at least three tiles (though I try to time it so it's available as soon as the conditions are met). So typically, my first worker comes when I've hit 3 population, which usually happens naturally after I've finished building necessary defence and exploration forces. My first settler - unless, as mentioned before, there's a city location I want to snatch up - usually comes right after that.
In my most recent game (still ongoing), Russia spawned really close to me (Indonesia) so rather than make a settler, I started pumping out warriors and slingers. Peter built a second city right on my capital's border and I took it before I even researched the archery tech. Then I took his capital, so I had three cities all in the early ancient era - a pretty strong start, if I do say so myself.

    for a better build consider
1st scout- this is incredibly important at turn 1 goody huts are incredibly good (eg extra pop, free builder/scout or if your lucky a relic) finding citystates first will award you a delegation if not you still get a quest for a delegation (if you get 1 delegation the scout pays for itself ie +2culture from a culture citystate for half the cost of a monument).it also allows you to find barb camps, roaming enemy scouts and places to expand you could consider getting a 2nd scout if you are on a large landmass as they are cheap and pay themselves off early game
2nd builder- the timing is situational to a small degree but basically you want to be expanding as fast as possible and builders are important for this. basically you want farms to increase the population of your city then they will support civilians working production/ other resource tiles later then once you have these farms building mines or collecting luxury resources. note pop uses 2 food so changing a 2 yield tile to a 3 yield gives 1 food surplus or a 3 yield to a 4 yield tile doubles the surplus from 1 to 2 also pop gives yields in it self that is 1 pop is .5 science pt and .3 culture. so for example having 4 pop gives 2 science + .9 culture and 4 worked tiles which makes it the 2nd most efficient way to get resources behind the scout
3rd warrior- you could get this before the builder but preferably afterwards as it will slow down your production basically at this point you need a warrior and you're wasting your starting warrior if you leave it in your capitol it should help your scout explore or be clearing encampments also dont leave this in your city at the very least if you're worried about units in fog have it 3 or four tiles out basically you want this warrior to be standing in your city if enemies start to invade at close to full health to fend off any attacks. at this point in the game it has the highest combat strength so adding it to the city strength makes it difficult for a city to be taken especially if you fortify it. so basically warriors are most efficient at this point to clear barb camps and defend cities. i realize some people will ask why not use a slinger as slingers are cheaper and my main advice would be look at a guide on combat strength as just 2 or 3 more combat strength more then the unit your fighting will make a difference but basically the added combat strength from warrior added to city makes it last longer and deal out more damage to warrior attackers you would need twice the amount of slingers to take a city then warriors and there best use is a support troop basically use them alongside warriors attack with slingers to weaken the enemy melee troop then your melee troop has a advantage and can finish it off. were warrior are cost efficient damage and provide the the area of affect slow on surrounding tiles(forget the name) while the range attack from slinger weakens the enemy warriors combat strength so your warrior has an advantage.
4th settler- so the reason for the settler is the same as the builder you want to get a city> grow pop of the city> work the production and repeat till you win or lose the reason why settler is fourth is that the first settler is kinda cheap relative to other settlers/the warriors needed to "liberate" another civs city. also other cities wont be close enough in that if they see your warriors four tiles away they have the time to produce a warrior by the time they get close enough to siege so generally just pay for a settler for your 2nd city
5th- so this is were you have to follow what is happening in the game you want to keep expanding so ether build settlers/warriors(with range units as support where 2 warriors have no more then 1 slinger for support) to take cities make sure worked tiles are improved then consider cranary-if more population is needed(the food is useful if you buy it on new cities to quickly get them running) traders these are a lower priority early game but can be useful for getting extra food/production useful for roads main use is for moving units from one side of your borders to another so you dont need units for each city or speding up growth for new cities or speeding up production of wonders just have traders going out from the city it is built in beforehand. districts are probably next in line late game you will use the districts projects to win religious/science/culture victories. monuments are super low priority early game and are very situational you will get culture through citizens and citystates to unlock the civic tree which doesnt have enough impact on winning to validate allocating resources away from expansion ie build 2 monuments and know another player could have 3 more warriors so now your military is weaker and your city is worth more for a enemy to take which is the same for wonders ie i could go into detail but oracle comes at the cost of a small army
this is just a basic guide it doesnt take into account alot of factors like unique units, exploiting ai players(deity ai might seem more difficult till you realise they just get more resource so they will trade a luxury for enough gold to buy the units to take over there cities), island maps or weird start positions that give off a situational advantage/disadvantage but is a solid base to make a build around. basically it's built aorund what the more efficient option is, if you can build off of it you can win against 95% of other civ players but at the cost of facepalming every time you hear a potato giving advice on how to civ6

Scout, settler, slinger that's my order as well
And my thinking was like easy.. i wanna get those goody hoods before someone else does. And i wanna automate my settler production as soon as possible. I rather wanna have 11-12 small cities than just 3 big cities until late game. The more area/cities i can throw and claim between my capital and other players the better. And going the same pathway it's also more valuable to chop trees for the pyramide and the nice garden. Every bit of growth helps, bonuspoints for large rainforest areas with frequent catastrophies. I like them burning hot while having some marshmallows ready.
It also seems like the bonuses doesnt stack between having a volcano beside a flooding river tile. The flood wins and the volcano does nothing on the tiles.

A little addition or probably more advanced stuff: Scout for other civs. Try to cover all directions and make out map borders. once you find a map border try to explore in a different direction and try to eliminate big blank spots on the map around you so you can't miss a civ. While doing that your second unit is and must always be a settler. Unless rare cases where you city is under siege by barbarians. But usually you can amass enough gold to buy units whenever you need them in the start phase. Talking of gold: Look out for strategic and luxury ress and trade them to other civs once you find them. Even if that gets you negative amenmeties at the start. Just make sure you get a proper price for them. With this gold you can leave some in stock for safety buying a slinger/archer in a city which is in danger. While scouting make plans for your second city already. Try to place it as close to another kingdom as possible. Therefore expand away from the closest map border and try to determine the outer boundaries of your territory right at the beginning. You can settle at up to -8 loyalty and manage to keep the city. -8 loyalty is difficult to keep, but -6 or less is no problem. Next steps: Get Magnus and once he is established, chop settlers. If you need a governor to get your loyalty up in another city chop government plaza and ancestral hall once philosophy is done.

Good points. On the monument, if you find a cultural city state early on, that will boost your culture more than the monument would have.
One side question: Why slinger instead of warrior for defense? I've found that early on, slingers die much more easily to barbs than warriors. Is this mainly for the upgrade to archers later on/boost?
Also, this build order is why I love Gilgamesh.
Need Scouting? War cart. Need defense? War cart. Need offense v cities states? War cart. No matter the task, war cart does it best.
Cart, Cart, settler. Your army moves seamlessly between defense, killing barbs, scouting, and offense.

@@TheSaxyGamer, I've come to find out that if you have two Slingers keep one perpetually guarding your Capital City. Use the other Slinger to hunt alongside your Warrior. This way when both get to or near a Barbarian Encampment the Barbarian, I forgot the name of the Pikemen predecessor, unit that Barbarian unit usually will abandon it's Encampment to go after your Slinger. This serves two general purposes. Unless if your Slinger is already low on health your Slinger will survive and get a hefty EXP boost due to the melee attack on them. The second general purpose is this gets that Barbarian unit to come out of it's Fortify status and stance. Rarely does this Barbarian unit bother to re-Fortify should they ever fall back to their original Encampment. This will enable you to sometimes one-shot that Barbarian unit. If they're inside of their Encampment when you do this you also clear it out in the same turn to yield all of those associated bonuses.
Now once you've upgraded your Slingers to Archers this becomes an even better strategy so it's usually your Warrior or Swordsmen who wind up tanking instead of your glass cannon Archers. I've also noticed that unit EXP level upgrades do alot more for the units in Rise and Fall than in Gods and Kings as well.

Starting warrior goes radially, 1st scout runs off, 2nd scout/slinger wanders closely until the settler is almost ready and they both go settling. In 2nd city "monument -> slinger" or the other way around, depends on the map and barbs.
That lets me kind of not very safely (but not very reckless either), but get first three civics faster and i find it very crucial in my games.

Settler as your 2nd or 3rd unit and on city size 2 is really early. I prefer to go scout-scout-builder. Then scout for barbarian camps, nearby cities and expansions and either build a military unit or a building and only build a settler once the city is size 3 or 4 and has 3 improved tiles. Then either more military or a building and a builder to improve 3 more tiles before a second settler. Using slingers or warriors to scout may be worth it for their extra durability, but scouts are slightly faster.

  • @Abraxis86
    @Abraxis86 6 років тому

Monument first isn't a terrible idea. It's not something I do often, but there are cases where it is optimal such as if you plan for grow fast (like if you are Egypt and hit your flood plane bias, or you start next to sugar), then getting early culture and so border expansion will save you moneys you won't have and give you better tiles to work which pays off in food/hammer/whatever else earlier and opens up your luxuries too, which you'll need if you're prioritizing growth, and also give you 5-10% more city yields.
Another benefit is rushing down the early culture tree which is great for getting to first Governments, getting your early governors set up sooner, getting an early culture district/great writer, or one of the wonders.
Also one of lesser import but still a thing that's worth considering is that it's a "safe" thing to invest in. Workers give improvements which can be raided by barbarians, Districts can be pillaged, and units can be killed, if these things happen that investment returns nothing -and these things do happen.
City center buildings on the other hand are not vulnerable to barbarians, so if you're expecting to be attacked a lot early game, they are the safer investment.

My first district is always a holy site ,even if I'm not planning a religious victory. If you don't have a religion during the game you are at a major handicap, get it always. Try and place it in a tile that will be on an future roadway to help move your religious units out faster as well. Love this game, definitely the best strategy based ever!

This Jungle/Hills will slow your early game down but it is good defense. The major priorities are to get that Classical Golden Age which can be frustrating actually to get 24 era points. So you need Agoge to get units produced faster. If your on the Coast you want the Naval Card and chop galleys. If you have horses you need Military Tradition to chop Horses. Next you want to get Magnus up asap and 3 builders to chop your way into victory. In all cases you are better off neglecting Science and building an Army to crush your neighbors ASAP while they are vulnerable. All of this is easier said than done because if you start getting into builder mode or make a few mistakes it will collapse your plan rather quickly. Not that you will lose the game but it can cost you 50 to 150 turns more to complete the game.

I would still advise against an early monument. Even if you want to wait to produce your settlers, I would much much much rather produce military units or a builder or two. With more units, you could either defend yourself very well as you expand or take over a nearby city state or player. The monument provides a rather small bit of culture and takes quite a few turns to build in the early game so I don't think its a great option to get it early on.

If you play Deity and Pang/Cont Maps you can't build a Monument First because you will get rolled but even if you have mountain and ocean protection you should go builder/settler first which is stronger than Monument First. In any case you are always better going Military First and if you want Classical Golden Age, which you do, the Scout is very important. After that you need some units to clear Barb Camps which help to get +2/+3 Era Score. You also want to the Army to protect when you Forward Settle the AI which you want them to attack you to kill their Army and to get the Boost for Declaration. Play how you want but if you read up on Civfanatics and watch the Pros this is how they do it.

The Saxy Gamer, I like to play as France in Civilization VI: Rise and Fall. I've learned that this is the optimal build order for at least France with Technologies:
    1. Scout - Pottery
    2. Builder - Mining
    3. As many Slingers as possible till Astrology is completed.
This is best when you have one or more Stone tiles adjacent or within one tile to your City Center. This way you can immediately begin to build Stonehenge. This will enable you to get the first Great Prophet therefore giving your Religion the potential to become the most OP Religion in the game. I've come to learn it's best to establish our Religion as early as possible. This way you have a good or better chance at spreading your Religion like crazy or keep it around to prevent an AI opponent from easily achieving a Religious Victory.
I've come to find out too, The Saxy Gamer, that the optimal "Search Pattern" early game is doing light exploration with your Warrior unit. If they find any Villages be sure to gather them up as soon as possible. Otherwise don't go out of your way to go finding them. You go out of your way to find Barbarian Encampments instead with your Warrior unit. Generally you attack the Barbarian Encampment twice then heal up. Rarely does the Barbarian AI outright attack you the turn you get into range or attack and easily kill you when your Warrior unit is in the red HP level. This is super effin' annoying to me when it happens though. Usually though attack twice and on the third attack phase choose Heal instead of attack. Heal till you're in the green HP again. Unless if said Barbarian Encampment happens to be getting attacked by one or more other AI units which could very well kill-steal as well as rob you of that needed military boost and 50 Gold which is extremely important in early game.
One of the most crippling things I found out when I first played vanilla Civilization VI was radically different the Barbarian Encampments work compared to Civilization V: Gods and Kings. In Civ 5: Gods and Kings you can select the Barbarian Encampments to become as super hostile and pump out unit after unit in up to extreme rapid succession. In Civilization VI and Rise and Fall Barbarian Encampments generally are of no real threat to anyone till their Scout finds your Civilization, a City-State, and/or another Civilization's border(s) who then immediately, or usually immediately returns back to their spawning Barbarian Encampment. Often times the very next turn they get within one or two tiles away from their Encampment they'll spawn a Horseman, Slinger, or Warrior. They spawn any of these units it's always best to fall back to your own Civilization immediately or try to kite the Barbarians back to your Civilization so you can try to get that boost to that Military tech that reveals Iron. If said Barbarian Encampment spawns a Horseman just know your Warrior can very well be killed within two turns, sometimes just one turn. So yeah, Horsemen are way OP this early in the game and it's universally the Barbarians who are up to vastly more OP than all of the Civilizations put together.
Sure I am making it sound as though this is all taking within 100 to 200 turns, but no I am talking about the first 60 turns when chances are you're struggling to pump out Settlers, have a Military unit to Link them to so they can safely be escorted to wherever you're sending them such as a Plains Hill, River tile that has one or more adjecant Luxury resource tiles. Nothing sucks more when it's turn 40 something and you've gotten your first Settler, but you're just aching to settle your new City right next to or two tiles away from an incredibly useful Natural Wonder only for a Barbarian unit to run up and snatch your non-protected Settler.
The single best improvement as far as I'm concerned Rise and Fall has over Gods and Kings is the Captured Settler "system". Gone are the days when you'd capture a Barbarian Settler one way or another and the second you do the Barbarian Settler turns into a Worker unit. Nope! You capture a Barbarian Settler and it becomes *your* Settler. It doesn't matter if said Settler was originally from another Civilization. What's even better is these newly recovered Barbarian Settlers do NOT count to the purchase and build prices to new Settlers in your Civilization. When I found this out by accident I nearly screamed, "FUCK YEAH!!" in real life. lol So always remain vigilant about capturing really any non-standard Barbarian units this includes Workers too.

On diety I usually find that building a scout instead of a warrior is bad unless you plan on never going to war. This is because barbarians are everywhere and the ai is very warmongery early on. Plus half the time a scout can only move 1 anyway. I find a warrior to be not catastrophic in exploration and goody hut purposes as appose to a scout while being much better at fighting and you can train him up for war.

Scout in order to find other players, then settle in their direction so that they can't steal valuable land from you. Make sure you stand on tiles with hills and/or trees on them when your troops are defending to get a defense boost. I generally like to go for science victory as it is one of the easier ones and your troops get more advanced as you progress. I don't know if you have the dlc, but kupe is extremely op on maps with separated land masses, as he can immediately send settlers across the ocean and form empires on multiple continents. The most important thing is to grab up as much land as possible, as more land = more cities and more cities = more districts and more tiles per city = more population and more production. Find a good balance between settling and defending. If you're playing with rise and fall, learn how to use the loyalty system. There's a policy that gives +6 loyalty for a governor, and another one that gives you +2 when a unit is in the city center. A monument gives you +1 loyalty, and the greater the population of your city the more loyalty it will have. Focus on food and growing the population if your city is losing loyalty. Use the production gained from domestic trade routes grow newly settled cities quickly. Don't forget you can buy troops with gold if your city is in trouble, and if youre playing a religious game don't forget to use your faith before it all piles up. If you want to use nukes, remember to use a military engineer to build a missile silo or build a nuclear submarine to actually use the nukes. Don't forget to use builders to improve luxury tiles to keep your citizens happy.

I think building monument first is now viable and potentially underrated because you can recruit heroes with it. if you found either Hercules or Anansi a monument start would grant you HUGE advantage depends on your early game plan. The +2 culture per turn is also huge because it almost doubles your culture output so you can get to political philosophy much faster.
I'd say if you were spawn on a hill and mountain heavy terrain building scout wouldn't be worth it because exploration wouldn't be efficient and you'd better off do something else with the production.

I have to disagree with much of what you said. Firstly, having your warrior circle around your city exploring is a bad idea. Have him "go long" and look for the goody huts AND city states AND get boost for new continent. Getting the first envoy free from a city can give valuable boosts. Meeting 5 or 6 city states FIRST is huge. Build three or four scouts. THEY will explore around your city for for you. East, West, North, and South. If your warrior already looked in an area these will be "dead zones" for your scout. Why go over same area twice? It is not a mistake that one of your first government slots boosts XP for scouts. Build more than one. Proof can be found in the fact that other Civs get angry if you find too many huts! They are invaluable.
Building settlers too soon with seriously stunt growth. Try to get Magnus to his second ability before your build settlers, this will keep your population from getting trimmed.
See that Barbarian nest? Kill it. Era bonus for removing it, gold for removing it, XP for the warrior (he is gonna need it if more barbs pop up), also triggers eureka, also helps trigger Bronze Working. I would have AGGRESSIVELY sent that slinger to do the last bit of damage and triggered Archery. It was NOT that far away.
Lastly, that was not a very good opening settlement area. Impossible to get eurekas/civics boosts until much later in game.
Usually excellent videos but this one was well below par.

How did it take you 6:30 to essentially say "go for slinger/scout then settler"?

@SonOf McGringus yeah scouts arent that great a slinger will do the job and defend you from barbs. You can also hold the AI of with 2 slingers and 2 warriors if you do it right.

If you're playing on emperor or deity you can bribe rival civs into good favor fairly easily and quickly - just give 10 gold every 5 turns till you befriend them

Why settlers so early? Shouldn't you worry about getting your first city up and running?

    • @MrAskmannen

Building wide as early as possible in Civ VI is usually the best strat.
The game doesn't really reward you as much for building one or two huge cities like it does in Civ V
A Civ like the Civ V version of Venice wouldn't work in this game

When your starting location involves a lot of tree, or bonus resources like rice etc, would you recommend to exploit it to fasten your prod/pop? or just keep it with the adjency bonuses or bonuses from later tech era?

Why is a monument giving you +2 culture every turn not worth it as a starting build? Doesn't it increase the rate of border expansion and don't you want your capital to get big quick? Great videos by the way!

You probably won't have enough enough citizens to work the new tiles.

    • @alex2005z
      @alex2005z 3 роки тому +1

Bc you will get destroyed by barbs. You need a slinger first, then you want settler to get some cities, and only then a monument if you dont have good tiles to improve or want to get your campus on science game

1:17 Well, these days, if you have heroes and legends mode from the new new frontier pass, you absolutely *must* rush the monument to get a hero.

I've won on deity as japan in a religious victory. I had the religious governor with the additional promotion to apostles and popping off those apostles and gurus. I somehow managed to survive as I was on an island and AI couldn't build ships? So for me the starting tech was to get the religion asap (I spawned next to a natural wonder) and do the prophet training project to ensure I had the religion.

I kind of don't agree with this order. I find very useful going for a builder as soon as my population grows to 2 so that if we can build a mine the following units will come to produce faster.

I always choose the 'no barbarians' options in advanced settings before I start a game so that isn't really much of a problem for me :)

Do you generally settle all your cities as early as you can, ie. pump out, say, 7 settlers in a row if you're aiming for 8 cities? Or do you make 4, then do some other builds, then another 3?

    • @TheSaxyGamer
      @TheSaxyGamer  6 років тому +1

I generally like to start churning out all of my settlers in a row once I get the +50% production towards settlers card. I also tend to get 2 promotions on Magnus so that my cap can still grow while I make all of them. The exception would be if I am planning to go to an early, in which case I'd then build a bunch of military units and get my cities that way.

Noob strategy :) Builder then settler, if you face very aggressive enemy then army instead of settler or in meantime. Builder gives you production, the most important element in this phase. Remember that order is not fixed, you must always choose the best strategy for a particular moment that is why you must switch production order very often. Warrior is enough for scouting, just keep it close in max 8 hexes range, you can collect your points after first expansion. This game is not about running all-ins. Production + information > permanent army.

How do you get the markers for campus/city/commercial hub? i only have the default ones and i have trouble planning my cities due to this. I love these videos, it really makes me rethink my strategies. I had a routine and i didn't think things through before civ 6, from civ 3 to 5, i was more rushing wonders and not worrying about other cities development.

    • @TheSaxyGamer

The markers are part of a mod called Map Tacks, you can find it here steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1122081356&searchtext=Map+Tacks

I would personally install CQUI (by subscribing to it in the steam workshop: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1125169247) it has the special markers, production queue and other great UI improvements like hovering over cities to see which tiles they are working and which tile the city is growing to. :)
