I was a flight attendant with Lufthansa for 30 years and started working on long haul flights on the 747-230, back then painted like this one. Except the lower part of the fuselage, which was just polished aluminum. My retirement-flight took place on this Retro-747 at the end of April 2015. It really drove some tears into my eyes. Always happy landings!
As a former flight attendant with Lufthansa, I was trained on the 747-230 in 1982. In 2015 I was scheduled for my very last duty-flight from HND to FRA. Coincidentally, my last flight was on this historic livery 747-8, bringing back all those memories when all Lufthansa aircrafts were painted like this one and I was a young flight attendant. You can imagine that my very last duty flight before retirement on this special Jumbo Jet was very emotional for me. Frankly spoken, my eyes became a little wet when after my very last touch down in FRA the captain made a special public announcement, saying farewell to me and thanked me for 33 years of excellent service on behalf of Lufthansa and the entire crew. When suddenly all passengers applauded, I could not hold back a tear or two. That is why I look at this special 747-8 with sentimentallity.
I love the fact that Lufthansa has chosen to paint one of the last passenger Boeing 747s in the style of its first examples (series -130s; later -230Bs) from nearly a half century previously. This particular Retro jet is truly a commercial aviation classic. And she's beautiful!
I love it when airlines bring a part of history into the present. I feel like airlines that bother to care about the customer experience at least a slight bit (like lufthansa) should keep looking to the past for their inspiration for the future. Good job lufthansa, I hope other airlines will follow in your footsteps.
Personal nostalgia. In summer 1971 we flew transatlantic for first time via Lufthansa to Germany, for a year of study abroad. Our four year old son was with us. I still have the thick cardboard page souvenir Lufthansa book for children the stewardess gave him sitting on a shelf in my study. Many great memories, but that flight on the early 747 is one that stands out.
HeartlandTuber I flew it a few yrs later in 1979 my mom had saved the magazine and tissues omg! What a awesome flight for my first time never forget it and visiting my German relative s in Frankfurt and Stuttgart...yes seeing this brings memories because most of my relative are gone now
I like how I like how Lufthansa is still flying the 747 why all the other airlines are just retiring them they may regret it in 5 or 10 years because passenger numbers are increasing and bigger planes be needed
Brad Haughton airlines are only retiring their old 747’s that have come to the end of their working lives. No airline throws perfectly good new 747’s on the scrap heap you silly sod.
Flew with Lufthansa Boeing 747-200 several times in the 1980s from Johannesburg-Nairobi-Frankfurt return. Seeing this livery again after so many years brings back awesome youthful memories. Thanks for posting.
Considering their 747 I flew with in 2015 from Munich to Boston was a real classic, or ancient let me say, the choice of this new color scheme suits perfect. That particular 747 didn't even have those backrest LCD monitors!
Excellent!! I love this airline first because of its service and second because they are still flying the 747...the best aircraft in the world of all time...I'm from Buenos Aires and luckily they are flying this aircraft from Frankfurt to my country and in my last trip from Germany to Argenitna I had the opportunity to travel with this D-ABYT...superb
While most other airlines have retired their 747's in favor of smaller twin engine planes Lufthansa has absolutely made the right decision to purchase new 747-8's and keep them in the skies. Passenger's like me who grew up in the planes 1st generation (I flew in the very first Continental 747-100 to Hawaii in August of 1970) and who continue to fly world wide for business and pleasure will only want to fly the 747. Simply put, It's part of what we are and what we feel about flying. And the Airbus A-380 in my mind is a ugly pig of a plane with no grace or style. These feelings alone by me and countless others will drive us to fly Lufthansa whenever possible and their profits will increase because of their wise decision. "If it's not Boeing, I ain't going is not just a slogan", it's a way of life. To put it simply, I personally feel more secure on long flights in a Boeing 747, period.
I absolutely agree with you, but unfortunately, emotions don't pay the bill. Any twin-engined long-range aircraft can be operated at much lower cost than the 747. Lufthansa has ordered the new 777, and I fear they will slowly phase out their 747-8 in the not so distant future.
I love some of the retro liveries airlines have, I know for a few years now I think since 2014 QANTAS have had “Retro Roo” and “Retro Roo 2” which they did for their 95th birthday celebrations which are 2x 737-800’s in the 60’s and 70’s Liveries. By geez they look good modern aircraft with the classic liveries, As I think it’s Retro Roo 2 that’s based off the original 707 1960’s livery and Retro Roo 1 is based off the 1970’s “Jumbo” or 747-200 livery (Or is it the other way round). Either way ones in the 60’s livery the other a 70’s livery and both liveries look great on the 737-800’s.
This is the aircraft I flew the first time ever from Cleveland to Frankfurt in 1979 straight flight it's an awesome queen of the skis and hats off to Lufthansa I'd recommend them highly I guess us Germans have it right ...
I flew on YT on LH423 BOS-FRA! (Fun fact, two years after it entered service the right front windscreen cracked on it’s way to FRA from IAD causing it to divert to BOS. I guess they didn’t check everything!)
You shouldn't be surprised at all. As a former airline VP, I am more than familiar with Boeing/Douglas and Airbus. More than likely, the A380 will cease production soon in favor of twin-jets. In service, it's been more expensive to operate than originally expected, and a few have even been mothballed so far. Boeing was correct when they provided us the anticipated market demand for the A380 many years ago. The decision to buy the 74-8 was very wise for LH, as once A380 production ceases, the residual value of others will adjust accordingly down. In my view, the A380 was mostly to show that EADS could compete in the jumbo market. Personally, I don't not like excessive dependence on computers for flight surface control. I prefer "full authority" for pilots instead of allowing a computer program to have the final say.
I know it's all about weight and fuel savings, but all these new materials I refer to as "plastic crap" just like everything else made of lightweight "futuristic" materials. Nothing will replace that beautiful, slightly rippled look of brushed aluminum. Where you can see all the little deformations and imperfections from each and every rivet, hatch, and contour of the fuselage, yet the whole thing has an authentic metallic look that is absolutely gorgeous and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Anything now that they try and copy that look with just comes off looking like any piece of plastic with that fake chrome material applied; It looks like cheap plastic crap because it's too smooth and doesn't look rough enough to be legitimate.
Aahh..back when flying was a thrill ...flew Lufthansa 747 Johannesburg - Frankfurt return many times in the 80's.. miss the stinky, noisy jets of yesteryear
I am not concerned with the transportation of nuclear weapons - if that is a big problem, we should probably ban the sale of B777 also, not to meant the C-17 Galaxy and probably a few other craft as well - we have a huge "shopping mall" in Arizona with 100's of planes that are capable of being refurbished and fly, 747's(VC25), Galaxies and so forth. I think that if the sale of these planes is as big a concern as Congress seems to think, perhaps they need some education. The Enola Gay wasn't as big as a 747 but she carried that bomb(the one dropped on Hiroshima at the end of WW2. earnestly with strength and style.
Most people in congress can't find their backsides with both hands, so don't worry about it! Putting a "mothballed" aircraft back into service is a major undertaking, and requires a great deal of time and money.
And take them back too... Plenty of work available if Germany only had the political will to do it. We could bring back into service dozens of aircraft to repatriate millions of The Religion of Peace. It would make a great investment!

Blau Bär Thanks for commenting and I am glad to see former Lufthansa employees here. 😉

Love Lufthansa and the fact that they are keeping the Boeing 747-8 alive !

Brad Haughton not fuel efficient though. 787-10 is much much more efficient
Siam Sattar The 787-10 might, be more fuel efficient, but it doesn't have the 747-8i's capacity or range.
Brad Haughton airlines are only retiring their old 747’s that have come to the end of their working lives. No airline throws perfectly good new 747’s on the scrap heap you silly sod.
Chris Dans Why so rude? No need for name calling. US airlines Delta and United have retired their entire 747 fleet.
Vistamister ‘silly sod’ is not a rude quite. Its more a term of endearment here in the UK. I wasn’t being rude. Sorry if it came over that i was.
The Lufthansa 747-8 retro livery came here to Houston earlier this week
Marco Hinton awesome bet that's a sight too see
Beautiful aircraft. I'd have a 747 over any other aircraft.
Great plane, excellent airline. Love the old livery. Well done Lufthansa.

a retro look for the queen of the sky's the best

The Dizz are you british??
No, I'm American with dual citizenship in Germany.
REPLY
380 is better :/
The Dizz ok
I absolutely agree with you, but unfortunately, emotions don't pay the bill.

....My Papa Worked for this Great Airline of Germany...From 1961 to 1989...Based from Montreal YUL-YMX....
Carlos Krueger awesome great company there attention to detail is the best and upmost in the world guess us Germans know what's good

So muss eine Lufthansa aussehen!
I am amazed they purchased 747s instead of more of the A380s !

Thank you! A wonderful film in every way.
I did not see this. So I don’t get rush time to get this flight. I don’t recognised what does Lufthansa A321-214, showcase old livery.
They should have just left the bottom of the plane without paint as it was already that metallic colour exactly like the old one
The greenish paint they’ve painted over it is an anti erosion paint and it’s almost a must to have a layer of it
They should have checked the windshield a bit more closely!

kudos to Lufthansa.
I thought he was gonna say a big head was headed my way because the 747 really does have a big head
YT will always be my nr 1 Jumbo ;-)
We need this livery in msf2020
Aahh..back when flying was a thrill ...flew Lufthansa 747 Johannesburg - Frankfurt return many times in the 80's.. miss the stinky, noisy jets of yesteryear
QUE HERMOSO
Not really originally retro livery. It's got the star alliance sign on it.
1970's: I always thought the noses were made of rubber!
I thought they looked like Snoopy noses as a kid
Composite materials, not rubber.
is the nose radar made out of lego?
The antenna is made from aluminum...

nanajodi201 there is no C-17 Galaxy you idiot, it’s the C-17 Globemaster III. You are thinking of the C-5 Galaxy.
This makeover makes it sexy 💫
Too bad the interior colors weren't retro as well!
Who is also German? :D
That 60's livery was the best Lufthansa ever had. The current one is awful.
Great Merkel can import Muslims 500 at a time.
And take them back too... Plenty of work available if Germany only had the political will to do it. We could bring back into service dozens of aircraft to repatriate millions of The Religion of Peace. It would make a great investment!
@@alexp3752 Cargo planes only and no parachutes. Just fly em' over the proper coast and herd em' out with cattle prods.
The paint job is a joke!!! The belly and engines are simply white-grey. They couldn't get some silver metallic paint?
Yes - This light-Grey instead of pure shiny silver looks ugly and booooring...
