I really love KLM's paint scheme, definitely one of the best in the world just for its cool simplicity and blueness. Hopefully they never change it! KLM-blue should be the national color of the Netherlands
Forget the advancement in paint , I am impressed with the drop down platforms . Painting off scaffolding is a pain . Assembly then move them disassembling.
@8justin88 It's a paste chemical that helps to clean off any left over bits of the old paint of. Extra paint means extra weight and extra fuel. Increasing costs. So they apply the yellow coat to cut down on extra paint and extra weight, in turn decreasing operating costs.
Everything is much improved since the 70s. For one all aircraft have TCAS (traffic collision/avoidance system) so he would see the plane on the little radar and know it was there - they turn it on when entering the runway

@nightfox What is your point? 15% = 15% We are talking about reducing weight of the paint itself, not 15% reduction in total aircraft weight. They better reduce the amount of luggage people can take on board with 1 kilo or let them have a good crap like I suggested if you're concerned about CO2. On a 747 livery the paint can weigh anything up to 500 kilograms or up to - 1000/1100 pounds . There is a tolerance involved so you are looking at a ball park figure hope this helps.
Its expensive and it’s old + they lose money because there are not enough passengers traveling with it, and fuel costs a lot of money, and its better to buy the 787 or 777

They do that! But the airplane gets painted over and over, and then they remove it all and paint again, because the airplane is heavier with so much paint!
Also what you would find here is that the coating system used, could possible be what's know as a Self Smoothing Anti Fouling System. As the Plane is in use its get slicker as it the system ages thus reducing weight improving aerodynamics.
I have to admit KLM has the most georgeous livery. Such a beauty!

as far as I know the paint can weigh 1-2 tonnes, so 15% could count up to 150-300kg. That for every flight can add up to a lot of extra fuel
