The ultimate luxury is being debt free!
That part.
As I once heard someone say, "Don't go broke trying to look rich!" Seriously guys, it's not worth it if you end up going into serious debt over luxury items.
Yes! It is funny cause I am in the cross section of tech and finance. I can guarantee you most people in tech make more than ones in finance, but for some reason it is OK to wear free shirts to tech offices but you have to spend hundreds to fit into finance ones. Bragging rights are quite different as well, you could be making 500k in tech and still show off how much money you saved by being frugal about something. The culture is so different.
Carrying a luxury handbag can’t make one looks rich
Apart from mortgage I won't advice anyone getting into debt. Specifically for luxury, its never worth it. If you don't have the budget to pay yet, don't go for it. Its not your time yet.
Couldn’t agree more. As well I would add, if there is even a chance you will want to get your money out of the item within the next five years-just pass. It isn’t worth it.
I could buy 15 Louis Vuitton bags and I have zero debt and I want to buy it but I still would not! It’s not wise. Emergency funds, retirement, all of that is also important. I have yet to buy a house, that’s important. I see a lot of young women in their 20s spending all their money and it’s scary. Youth does not last, neither do these handbags.
Hi Paris long time!
Anything new?
I’ll be there waiting if there is anew freedom hustle .
Hopefully not…
I'm a very frugal person who would, quite honestly, never buy a luxury item in the boutiques. However, I love luxury items and fashion. That's why I love UA-cam--I can see everything new out and enjoy all the eye candy. I think of like going to a museum; I'm just a spectator. As an aside, one of the things I've always appreciated about you, Sophie, is that you are the only luxury UA-camr I've seen who addresses debt and buying responsibly, which is so important.
If you're getting into debt buying luxary items. You need therapy, not a credit card. Possible help with addiction issues.
I love Klarna because sometimes I don't like to see my money gone at once. I would never use it without already having the full amount of money because I watched the movie "confessions of a shopaholic" when I was a kid and vowed to never be in debt especially for luxury items 😂.
if you have a cashback or point credit card, I would use it to get money back.
A lot of people using Klarna don't have credit cards.
Same here. I’d never buy something that I can’t cover with the money in my account but if I can avoid spending that money at once and instead pay with my disposable cash over 3 months with no interest I’ll take it. I prefer PayPal though.
If you have to go into debt to acquire a handbag it's no longer luxury.
The question should be, WHY THE FUCK SHOULD I SPEND A FEW GRAND ON A BAG?
As someone who is in the younger generation, I'm 24, I'm concerned by the amount of buy now pay later services available. It's so easy for someone with minimal understanding of finances to get in a tough situation. I have some luxury items in my closet, but most of them I bought preloved and I saved up for them. Since they are just things, there's no point in going into debt, in my opinion. I just wish these services weren't so readily available.
I don't think it's anything related to not understanding. It's a bunch of morons making a wrong decision. Keeping up the the Joneses is more important. I never fell in this trap and I could care less. You can fix stupid.
I purchased a handbag on PayPal credit that i absolutely could not afford and it ruined my entire summer that year bc I was stuck paying it off. Never again!!! I’ll save beforehand next time. Great video 😊
Younger me definitely had to learn this lesson, now I realize that I can like a piece and don't necessarily need to own every pair of shoes or bag I like from the runway 😂
Yes, please do a careers-oriented video again! I have been re-watching your career tips, but I would love to learn more.
It is so great to hear someone speaking candidly about money and addressing income rather than talking about extremely stringent savings measures. So many jobs have unliveable salaries, and they’re not rewarding!! I love when women talk about how they moved into a role that gave them more (financial and personal) power
I think it is truly personal responsibility. It is up to the person to be responsible with their money.
My concern is that these ‘buy now, pay later’ companies are becoming the default. I bought something online yesterday, and had to manually select a ‘pay now’ option- the default was Afterpay.
Very simple. Don't use this shit. Pay cash or from your checking account if you're buying online. You can also use your credit card/PayPal for better security. Once you pay, repay that purchase to your credit card. Use the credit card like a debit card.
All good points! When I am not able to purchase I stay off social media and amazon. Now that the weather is getting nicer I go for walks, listen to audible books on finance and such.
Some very good advice I got from my parents upon applying for my first credit card: never buy anything you can’t buy outright with cash. In other words, don’t make purchases you can’t afford. That advice has stuck with me and I’ve found it helpful to keep me from making impulse purchases
Klarna is interest free. They do charge 7.00 fir each missed payment. Never used that one. PayPal has one I use from time to time. No interest. No charges but I pay timely. This is actually better than using credit but I use that too on a store card usually. I get all of these bonus points and am disciplined. That’s the difference. Use credit responsibly you won’t have an issue
Thank you for this info Kate!!xx
Yes me too, never missed a payment
I luv my PayPal credit I have a 10k limit have never charged more than 500 us..
Really? I'm in Germany and Klarna here has around 12-14% interest, Paypal has a pay 30 days later option for 0%, but everything above that is also at 9,99%
I only know about luxury brands because of social media. I haven’t gone into debt, though. I bought some pre-loved items from online sites you mentioned a long time ago. I had debt, but I managed to get out of debt completely- even mortgage debt. It’s a good feeling.
When I was in my twenties I managed to qualify for a credit card, which was a big mistake. I charged things as if there were no tomorrow, ended up unable to make the minimum payment, and took scissors to the card! Scary that was.
Social media has made me a more savvy consumer. Honest reviews of bags have helped me sift through all the different factors - style, size, material, color, brand - and make choices that work for my lifestyle and needs.
I feel like it’s important to add that it’s not just luxury items causing this new trend towards astronomical debt. I know from personal interactions with friends that people (my friends are mostly if not all women) are purchasing things on credit like trendy home organization items, Cricut add-ons for their “hobby”, and of course the still ever-present trend of pricey cosmetics. It’s utterly ridiculous. Our lives are becoming increasingly more meaningless, so the compulsion to buy things to make us feel better continues to spiral. I feel like our collective future is just heading towards a truly dystopian reality.
You aren't alone.
I needed this! Thank you. The inflation here in Turkey is just so bad that it seems like taking debt for items is the solution, but it just takes you down the rabbit hole of debt.
I use klarna I won’t to stop… it’s so convenient especially for items that I can afford but don’t really want coming out all at once. I always pay on time - you get plenty of warning. And as I have a regular wage just comes out my account. Great also when you want to order lots of sizes ect.,, as they’re great with returns and everything. But I will agree - it makes me buy more spontaneously and frivolously
I love these kinds of videos! This advice and honesty about finances is good for all ages. So often we don’t talk candidly about money and it can lead to a lot of misconceptions.
I have been buying with Klarna before, it’s a real addiction , in the end I ended up almost 2000£ debt, luckily i managed to pay it all off, but to be honest better don’t buy with Klarna.. once you start it’s very hard to get out of it. 😢
Hello my friend! Thank you so much for sharing this personal story, yes it can be soooo hard to get out of it once you’re in it!!xx
I've just tried Klarna this month. I never used it before because I thought it would be complicated too set up but it was very easy which is suspicious. Currently I have three items that have 3 installments due too go out in the next month. One order I did send most of it back so I'm now learning how too let them know that I don't owe them £90 anymore and actually the amount ive already paid covers the one item I did keep. So hopefully that process wont be too complex. If you dont mind me asking but how did you get into that debt using the service? Is there a catch i'm missing.
@@katievictoria4450 as I remember it, if you return stuff the amount that you owed will be adjusted automatically. Say you bought 4 items and return 2, the amount will be adjusted. At least that's my exp
I love the contemporary Cheongsam you are wearing 💜 To me, luxury comes after you have paid for all your living expenses, spent time and money on your loved ones, and traveled the places you want to go.
That's true luxury...
Keeping it honest and real is definitely a core part of your brand.
I am in my 60s, it’s liberating to see people spend and pamper themselves. I haven’t been pampering myself in a light-hearted way, there is always a sense of toxic guilt, and I hated it, social media helps me to get out of it. Now I spend, enjoy the luxuries I buy and be happy about it. (I have to add this, I always spend within my means, never on credit).
I couldn’t even buy a lipstick without guilt. Terrible relationship with money. It’s not healthy at all.
i love this. our money should work for us and we shouldn’t have to feel ashamed for wanting to treat ourselves and make life easier/better with things and experiences. but the key is definitely in staying within your means, as you highlighted. i think luxury is a mindset and a subjective experience for everyone.
sophie, you're so right about debt. it's easy to rack up but takes forever to pay down. youtube does influence me to buy things but i set firm goals. example, i'm about to buy another pair of shoes i don't need. my goal is to pull the trigger on them after 1 of 2 things happen: i save the money beforehand (3 weeks) or i look in my closet for a similar pair (there are many) and wear them until i get over it.
I bought my first Birkin in December and used PayPal Credit because it's 6 months interest free as long as it's paid off before the end of the time period. Obviously you have to make minimum payments every month which is 1% of the balance. But I did this because my high yield savings account is giving me more than 4% interest. I have the money to pay off the bag now but don't see the point in paying more than the minimum until the whole balance is due because I'm making money having that money sit in my account. Have done this with other luxury purchases. You just need to be smart about it!
Thx for sharing
Is this possible in Europe or USA?
@@victoriagonzales5164 I’m in the USA, unsure about other countries
@@victoriagonzales5164sometimes they offer 0% interest. Just keep an eye out. Have been doing this too…
Now this is a great point! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this!🙏🫶xx
I appreciate your honesty especially being within the fashion industry. Social media got people out here being delusional having them keep up with trends. I was so conditioned as a child to have the latest stuff.
Only a broke mentality cares about the logo being plastered everywhere for validation. Wealthy people don’t wear a bunch of logos in ur face.
Glad I’m older and more conscious in my decision making when it comes to shopping because there are good quality luxury brands out there where the logos aren’t all in ur face.
I appreciate how openly u speak about debt. As someone who got out of debt i became fearful of spending affer awhile ... i am finally at a place where i am.more mindful of my purchases and more happier now
When I was young I got into debt, thinking after my studies I’d pay it back easily with a good job. As that’s what we were being told. Work hard, do well and you get there.
Well that’s not true. It was just before 08 so there weren’t any jobs 😂
But interest rates will rise and your debt gets stacked. It is absolutely horrible. Even if you have a good job, something can always happen.
DO NOT SPEND WHAT YOU DO NOT HAVE.
Cannot stress this enough
I’ve been waiting to purchase my first Chanel and I realized I’ll
Never get to that point at this rate so I just purchased consignment just so that I have it now before the price increase any more . I did get a credit card just for this purpose and I do plan to pay 1000 dollars on it each month but I have to say the prices rising made me do it now . I hope someday I’m able to have the experience in the store for the first time soon after I clear this purchase but I couldn’t hold off anymore if I wait this 6000 dollar bag will surly rise to
10,000 in no time .
Yesss! Finally - someone being truthful about this subject. Thank you so much for your honesty. I racked up debt after getting sucked in by all the luxury hauls I saw on YT. Working my way to a debt-free life now and enjoying being satisfied with what I have!
I spent years just dreaming of owning anything Vivienne Westwood before actually getting anything. I was raised with "don't spend money you don't have". I only buy pieces when I can afford it without having to compromise on grocerie and all the household bills like for the house, car, insurance. Even then I try to find it second hand first. I genuinely love the designer pieces I own. Don't buy stuff just to look rich.
Please do a video on good quality clothing brands! I’m honestly not affected by trends anymore since I just get what I need and suits my style but some of my pieces don’t wash well 😅 love the video!
Hello my friend! I can definitely do that, keep an eye out for a new video soon 😊💗xx
@@SophieShohetOfficial looking forward to watching it! 😊
Hi Sophie. This is a long awaited video. I love your old videos on money, saving, budgeting and watch them over and over😂. I agree with you that it's not worth getting debt for luxury. It's a never ending game that I believe can cause one more stress trying to payoff that debt, than the pleasure of enjoying the purchases. Thank you for this video. Stay blessed
Great video Sophie. Completely agree with you in regards to debt. I save up and use my bonus when I plan to buy a luxury item. I bought two bags last year my first Chanel and my second Gucci. My first purchase was over 12 years ago. I used my two bags that I bought so long ago to death one Burberry all leather and a canvas Gucci hobo. I think I’m done with luxury hand bags the time being. Thinking I will get a few ready to wear items I just purchased my second Burberry trench coat my fist one lasted almost 20 years
Excellent video Sophie. Debt is a modern form of slavery.
So true!!!
I use Klarna, and it works fine for me, but I have a hard rule for myself that I do not pay in installments. I use it knowing it will need to be paid in full and I never have problems.
Same, it is actually very handy
As a business owner, I chose to not offer Klarna because my business is the one that incurs 6-7% of the purchase price as a fee when a customer uses their credit/debit card if I offered Klarna or any of those other "pay over time" plans. I would have to increase my prices by about 7% to compensate for this additional fee. At least that is how it works for a business owner in the US. I cannot speak to how it works on the customer side. Sophie, I appreciate you bringing this problem of debt to acquire things that are marketed to us all. I have learned to only buy things I can afford and things I will wear for years to come.
Hi Sophie, thanks for this video 👍 in my opinion you’re one of that rare diamonds on social media we should educate ourselves more about the luxury debts
That’s so kind of you to say, I always hope to do the best 🫶 Hugs to you! Xx
She is right about social media. 👍🏻Since around 2015, I've been SO IMPRESSED with lower price brands producing designs similar to the top fashion houses! This gives consumers more options than ever that fit more budget levels. 🌟I did a double-take when I saw a bag display at Target that had the influence of the Hermes Kelly! For a
I think a lot of people need to realize is that you have to calculate how much you can spend on things AND still being able to save a decent amount of money. If you can’t buy it, don’t buy it. Even if you can buy a Louis V, Chanel or whatever rich brand bag. Consider if it’s actually worth the hype maybe better invest in your home, or a car or bike for transportation than a small tiny bag.
Hi Sophie! You look very good in this video! 😘
She does. I guess she's wearing the right color of top that brings out her beauty 🥰
You’re both so kind, thank you both so much for the love!🙏🥰🫶xx
I love your videos that are not about stuff.
We are all responsible 😅
I’m frugal honestly but luxury UA-cam has helped me learn to identify quality. Now I buy slower bit higher quality items. I’m saving up for classic pieces that last longer.
No I did get scammed trying to buy a second hand Chanel bag and learnt my lesson. I’ll wait until I can afford one.
Thanks for telling your story! It was very helpful to hear about your struggles. Your story encouraged me greatly!
These are my favorite types of videos! Thought provoking & insightful! ❤
I don't blame social media 100%. I blame people's susceptibility to peer pressure, crowd following, marketing, and general media. Social media is just another promotion tool. The bigger problem is people are so concerned with looking rich instead of being rich.
Klarna is very useful and u HAVE to set up automatic payments and you CAN pay it off in full, it does not hurt anything. And yes it does help raise your credit over time
It’s literally the same as a credit card except they debit you every 2 weeks. You can even use it in brick and mortar stores. But like you said, you have to be able to actually pay it
No Klarna is direct debit in set number of payments. No interest and yes you can pay it off early no penalty. If you have the money in your bank already but just rather break up a large purchase over time it’s actually great.
I agree .you get plenty of warning when payments are due .if for any reason you cant pay on due date the customer service are super helpful and and emphatic. You just need to discipline yourself not to order items with different brands at the same time I think that's how some people get into serious debt.
Fashion and stuff is good for the soul. When you own it, you feel good. Even so for high ticket items with exceptional quality or quota bags, e.g Hermes etc , the desire to own more of it has become stronger in you emotionally because you feel you’ve gotta have it, the cure to your depressed state thinking you gotta keep up with the social trend of not being left out. Yet the desire to chase to own more of the bags supersedes the need to pay your debts, thinking you can get away for years via instalments or other means of payment as long as you are employed. The crisis now can’t be everted unless a life changing system is in place to change how we look into luxury and fashion.
I use Klarna all the time but not for credit, only invoice to be paid in 30 days. That way I get the products before paying and I can return stuff and pay only what I keep and I don`t have to wait to get my money back. I don`t have any debt, I pay everything I buy when I`m sure all is well with my purchase 😊
I do the same thing. If you use a plan that you pay off quickly there is no interest. You just have to make sure the money is in your account.
Social media has definitely has an impact on my appetite for things, but I’m also one who would google review frantically before buying so social media is good for me in this light. I also think if one has to pay in installments for a luxury item one is not ready 🙏
You are so amazing! This was a responsible video with a wealth of good advise. There has to be a balance in want, need and can afford. While we all have those magpie moments of wanting the pretty thing we see, there is a deeper gratification in saving for that thing and then paying cash. Often I find that by the time I have saved enough, something I like better has become available and I am glad I waited. My worst purchases have been impulse purchases. Oddly enough, one of those impulse purchases was a Split It purchase on a popular resale show, Eeeek. Once I got the item, I was regretting my purchase and most of all that I was going to be paying for it over 12 months. It was my monthly regret reminder. All of your videos are fantastic and I appreciate your thoughtfulness. Have a great day!
Looking forward to your next video Sophie on promotions, advancement etc!
This is why I follow you, Sophie. You are so incredibly gorgeous, smart, inspiring and I only hope to be like you one day ❤❤❤
That was a really good video. Luckily I've never been in debt but social media defintely makes me buy more handbags than I need. BTW your dress is lovely and really suits you 😁
Really appreciated that you made such a video, I don’t come across any similar videos from fashion UA-camr at all. It’s a substantive topic that people are ignoring while it is really an issue
The leather and craftsmanship of chanel costs a few hundred, as does hermes. There is no justification for thousands. Consider switching to high quality bags at a more justifiable price point such as polene, mlouye, strathberry, aspinal
Love your outfit Sophie 😊❤
It’s a lesson i spent the last 12 years learning. But i have literally cut my credit cards in half a few months ago. Feels good.
Love your top in this video! The colour really suits you 😊
Great topic! Love it! Thanks!
Another excellent video. I definitely found that after I joined instagram I was being heavily influenced to buy goods I wouldnt have beforehand. I have a tendency to overspend especially when Im stressed so I am quite mindful of my spending but the risk is always there. I love the preloved market and that is a good avenue for me because it also satisfies my need to be more environmentally conscious with my purchases. I do buy new luxury bags too but I have cut down on this considerably and try to wait a couple of months before purchasing and its amazing how many times I find I actually dont want the item anymore if I add in a wait time.
Personal opinion:
Aside from a mortage (and that should be a very thought-out step in life), you should never get in debt. It might sound nice like "oh I'll pay back later... Somehow". But that will come back to bite you.
(Obviously if you are starving and need to buy food - that's a different story. We are talking luxury (=excessive stuff) here.)
Omg I do have to tell my story. The 1st time I heard about moving jobs and getting promotions was with older your videos. I actually started doing that. And along the way I met other 3 woman with VP title that did the same thing! I still use this technique. But I will be forever grateful for giving me this guidance through your videos. If it wasn’t for you I don’t think I would gotten this far. I didn’t have career/financial mentors back then.
Dear Sophie your blouse so cute ! Really looks good on you! ❤❤
Hi Sophie I don't have any bills just taxes, insurance, I 'm older, but I love Klarna, PayPal, pay in 4 because maybe something is on sale, but always pay off in intended time.I only spend a certain amount (spending money ) a month.Great video, don't go in debt for luxury Thanks❤
My favourite videos of yours are your career advice and story times!!
Ahhh, thank you! I will for sure make more!! Hugs xx
my rule is, if I can't buy the unnecessary luxury thing and put the same amount into savings/investment/pension fund in parallel, then I can't afford to have the item.
Luxury goods aren't worth the price we pay for. None of them! What makes them appealing is their price tag which creates a feeling of scarcity. When it seems scarce then we want it. We want something that others can't have. If Chanel bags cost $99 it wouldn't sell in masses. Because it's within reach of most people. Most small to medium size Chanel bags don't cost $99 to the company to make. Think about that... think about how we make someone filthy rich paying them our hard earned income or getting into debt that's going to take some time to pay off. Over what? A bag?
sophie, thankyou for being so real ♥ here in my country we have all kinds of credit payments, quite easy to set up with minimum verification process. people with poor financial literacy use them for even tiny purchases, so the amount of inhumane debt collectors practice had been through the roof! it's so hard to break the cycle of evil interest rate as well.
Well done Sophie...your most important video yet xxx
I love the video range you post. You give a smart perspective. There's a chemical reaction in our brain like a high when we buy something new, right? I love my handbag collection but with the huge price increases it's taken the fun out it, really. Social media does fuel it but I also see the saturation and sometimes that actually helps me not to buy. I'm in my 60s and I've have/had the debt and it's a huge mental drag. You are so supportive and well-rounded in your vlogs🌼
Not me Sophie if I can't afford I don't buy it. I prefer to save up 💕
Great video ❤ thank you
Hi Sophie! Really interesting video! I would love to see a video from you dedicated to luxury dupes, since dupes come up only in haul videos and the like. I've been looking at the Coach Madison bag and I think it might be a great dupe for a Chanel flap! Thanks for your time!
I find that social media is really helpful when I buy anything from a home coffee machine to a luxury handbag. It’s really good to be able to do months, sometimes years, of research into a product before buying it.
With increasing your income, I am a big fan of passive income. It’s really nice to get a dividend cheque twice a year having done absolutely nothing.
Love your videos Sophie!!!!
I’m certainly influenced, but more so by people on the street and my circle of friends and my browsings through second hand sites…
As for debt, I’ve never had it or gone into debt for anything… and most certainly not a bag. It’s important to me that I have lots of money leftover to spend on my travels and to invest because these bags, while they may be my life, cannot support me anyway..
The Klarna payments also add up to quite a lot more than the original sum. Like, they'll lure you with payments at, say, 100€/month over six months and you end up paying 600€ for your item when it was only about 500 € to begin with. Like, they 'hide' their interest in the rates as opposed to saying "We'll lend you the money at 10% interest" as banks would do.
I had no clue! Thank you for sharing Kath xx
It is very easy to get carried away and want to buy another let say expensive bag but as you mentioned the satisfaction quickly ends after you get it and now you want sth else to fullfill this endless need…. You know it is like zara where everytime you get in you will always find sth exciting to buy…. However with luxury items things get serious… I try to restrain myself even by avoiding going to shops or visiting sites…..
Beautiful cheongsam sheer top/dress!
Hi Sophie! IMO you look the best in this romantic/boho outfit, gives me the feels of a classic elegant lady!
debt has always seemed scary to me. i suppose it doesn’t have to be; if it’s under control and exists for a valid reason.
my parents are older and have never owned credit cards or anything of that nature. so i’ve had to learn that debt is more of a prevalent reality for people than i realised.
i’m fortunate enough to not be in any debt from my university years, and would like to remain debt-free as much as possible. especially for things like luxuries.
Good for you Laura!
imagine getting in debt for designer clothing in 2023 when replicas are so good that even rich people cant justify purchasing retail anymore lmao
That shirt! BEAUTIFUL!
your top is absolutely gorgeous!
I have just brought my first Chanel on a credit card on 20 months interest free. I have a firm rule that I will not buy anything else until it’s paid off.
Dealing with FOMO and acknowledging WHY I wanted to buy things was the best change I ever made financially. I am pro afterpay/zippay etc even credit cards when people are capable of using them responsibly (because it is possible). Also learning to budget (the budget mom was my favourite), but things like pay raises just arnt possible in some industries unless you get a promotion (which can be few and far between when people never leave cause your overpaid by industry standard lol).
I just got the keys to my first home, which I bought on my own. It was a long way to get here but huzzah!! 30yrs of mortgage debt to go 🤣
I Love your elegant dress ❤Sister!
I love your dress.😍
The NYtimes recently had an article about Super Fakes/dupes. Why do we need these items to feel good about ourselves?
Good video!!
Sm has def contributed to increased luxury buying and increased debt for aspirational shoppers. I’m guessing a number of influencers write off luxury purchases as business expenses. I think that’s how many can afford to shop and shop. Normal people don’t shop like some do with unboxings every single week. It’s nuts and just too much. The last few years there’s been an overconsumption in luxury and now with the recession and inflation it’s hitting people hard. I think luxury purchases will be tanking this year. It’s about time because prices have been out of control and ridiculous.
I LOVE your blouse! You look absolutely fantastic in it. Where did you buy it?
I really love Klarna but I feel like I'm smart with it! I'll pay the first installment but when payday comes, I pay it off in full!
I buy clothes on sale 75% of the time and I also buy things at thrift stores and consignment shops ❤/ I can afford to spend more , but I don’t
People need to take responsibility for themselves. If I decide to go into debt to buy an object - whatever it may be - that is my responsibility, not yours. You are not to blame! Not to mention that you have always been open about your own debt situation so it is terribly unfair for people to blame influencers, including you. I do use AfterPay for some larger items. Now it seems that people are using it to pay for their daily coffee, which adds up hugely over time! Not a good idea!
Thank you for the video!
