    I remember in the mid 80s I had the albums covers for mystical adventures and cosmic messenger as background for my fish aquarium and I would come home at night and play them albums while relaxing, smoking a pipe and just stare at the fish

    Carlos Santana's favorite scale. You can also hear on the Jazz standard Footprints.

    Great lesson, I love the sound of Dorian. The best exponent of solos in that mode I've heard so far is Frank Gambale. Granted, he chucks other stuff in there as well plus all the chromatic madness but wow, he owns that mode for me 👍

    trying to figure out what modes/scales beyond major/minor pentatonic the song Rock Bottom by UFO (well mainly the solo) uses, I was thinking mixolydian but after watching this im thinking it more includes Dorian! Any input on this would be awesome, but thanks for this video!

    Bb Major Parent Scale!!! Ties in with your recent & amazing String Skipping Arpeggio Lesson in G Minor (same notes as the Bb Major scale and the C Dorian Mode)! Also, Bb Major is my Holy Grail: Learn it like I know C Major Scale! Excellent Lesson, David! And your playing sounds beautiful! Thanks!

    I think Jean Luc was part of Zappa's '72-'73 band, if I'm not mistaken. Great musician and bandleader in his own right. I was thinking one of my favorite Dorian jams is "No Quarter" in D.

    So is it basically flat or sharp notes you are playing over these chords, I need to draw a big fretboard, with all the notes on each fret, to hang in front of me when I'm playing, I believe this would help anyone trying to figure out the fretboard,I played rhythm guitar in a band for years,but I had no music theory, and I seriously need to learn more chords, been trying to play lead and I do alright,but I think it's time for me to learn,what note is where.

    You keep saying the minor 6 chord, but the Dorian has the major 6th vs. minor 6th in Aeolian, right? Actually I know I'm right, just gets confusing. Easy way, minor scale with M6. But that only gets me so far, the chord progressions are the real art. I couldn't carry your case sir, just sometimes you awesome guys forget just how hard it is

    • @LateNightLessons
      @LateNightLessons  Рік тому +1

      Just to be clear here - Dorian is commonly played of Minor 6th chords.
      Aeolian would be played over Minor b6 chords.
      There is a difference between the two and be sure to watch the recent episode covering the Aeolian mode to understand more about the differences between these two scales.
      Thanks and good luck!

    I do not know why all you guys do any of the modes in other keys?? Just do D Dorian so there are no sharps or flats. It's a lot easier for those that do not know any music theory.

    • @LateNightLessons
      @LateNightLessons  Рік тому +2

      This lesson was in C Dorian for a reason. The song I recommended at the end is in C Dorian, so the premise behind this entire lesson revolved around Dorian in that specific key.
      Also, it goes without saying that you need to learn this information (and truckloads more) in every key.
      Just sayin'.
