  • 1946 - director: Victor Saville; producer: Leon Gordon; based on the novel by AJ Cronin
When young Robert Shannon is orphaned, he leaves Dublin, Ireland and travels to Loganford, Scotland, home of his maternal grandparents. Growing up in the home of his frugal grandfather is made bearable by his doting but irresponsible great-grandfather, loving grandmother and kind aunt and uncle. After a rocky start in his new school, Robbie adjusts and is befriended by Gavin and Allison, whom he grows to love as the years pass. As he matures into a young man Robbie's dreams turn to medicine and becoming a doctor. He is supported by everyone in the family except his grandfather and studies for a scholarship as a way to escape a life of toil in the local boiler works.

I just ordered this film on DVD and watched it again recently. What a great movie! Love Dean Stockwell! He is such a phenomenal actor, even as a child up to more recent years. Quantum Leap is one of my all-time favorite TV shows. I didn't really like Battlestar Galactica when it first showed up in 2004. However, I decided to give it another try since Dean Stockwell has an important role in it as John Cavil/Number One. He definitely makes that show much more interesting. From my understanding, they let him decide how to play both Al in Quantum Leap and John Cavil in Battlestar Galactica. He definitely didn't disappoint in either case.

Now available on DVD from Warner Archive. Excellent transfer and highly recommended. The film's one major flaw is the change an hour in from Dean Stockwell (totally excellent) as the child Robert Shannon to Tom Drake as the adult Robert Shannon. It's quite a jolt and the film suffers from it. But the same can be said of all films where the little boy character grows up suddenly halfway through the picture. It never works very well.

One of the best movies I've ever seen! 👍😃👏 Wonderful story of human courage, spirituality, pain and how love and kindness, friendship and belief in God and country are so very important Absolutely Loved It! My ancestry is Scottish/Irish so it meant even more that my Scottishgrandmother was disowned for marrying an Irish Roman Catholic!

a j cronin was a superb novelist. this is a great movie, it tends to stand in the shadow of hatters castle, but its a classic nevertheless.

I fondly remember this movie as a young teenager in the mid 60's. I thought it was great then as I do now. It is one of my most memorable films. Hey, Tylerugby, where on earth can I purchase a copy of it in any form? Can you make a copy? I have looked for ages and can not locate one. I once had it on vhs, I copied from TBS but someone accidentally lost it. Thanks for the post.

Poor Dean! Every time I see a film from his child-star days, I can't help think of how difficult it was for him. How sad that it took him 40 years before he was actually happy with a profession he was pushed into and, at one time, couldn't wait to get out of. Still, he's an incredible actor; always was, always will be.

Dean Stockwell gets forgotten a lot too. However, they have been talking reboots of TV series he's been in and there have been some recent remakes of some of his past films lately. So I've noticed he's being mention again in articles and some of his films and TV appearances that haven't been available are available to watch again. Very cool! There are rumors of a Quantum Leap reboot and a Battlestar Galactica reboot or continuation. There is now a 2020 version of The Secret Garden and remake of Dune is going to be released at some point.

I agree with Jamie O'Rourke that the 'Scottish' accents are all over the place in this Hollywood made film and many of the actors tend to lapse into Irish-American. Gladys Cooper sounds the most authentic regarding accent, but the film should have been made in Scotland with Scottish actors and actresses. The problem was that there were no British child stars in 1946 who could come anywhere near the talent that Dean Stockwell had. Some British child stars, such as Anthony Wager; John Howard Davies and Bobby Henrey were on the way, but were as yet not available at the time 'The Green Years' was being filmed and it's doubtful that, good as they were within their own acting range, that they could have acted the part as well as Dean Stockwell.

Darren, you can only depend upon Hellyweird for one thing; to supply an endless list of Drag Queens to play female parts. It is vile, evil and truly SICKENING.

Hollywood no longer makes movies like this because it is hard to sell a G-rated movie to the execs because the audience for G-rated movies is small. People look at the rating and decide from that. Perhaps if Hollywood had a track record of making high-quality G-rated movies, then maybe....

Well, Driving Miss Daisy was a super-hit, and I never figured out why it had a PG rating, there's no smut or serious violence in there at all!
And yes, I realize that Passion of the Christ was rated R for violence; but people didn't go to see it BECAUSE it had an R rating, you know? Do a sound, intelligent G-rated biblical film and the masses will come!
