I live in Ireland and the vast majority of young people stay in school until they complete their secondary education which is called a Leaving Certificate here, this is not easy to do, they take usually 7/8 subjects over 2 years and sit exams for all of these, Maths, English, Irish , a science subjects and usually a second subject are compulsory. The points from the top 6 subjects are used to help them get into university. Our children from a very young age get homework most days, this increases and intensifies as they get older, many yp get “ grinds” ( private) tuition in subjects in exam years. The school holidays are quite long ( 12 weeks summer holidays in secondary school) so alot is packed into the academic year, there is a vocational alternative to the Leaving cert but most take the LC, its alot of pressure for our YP. Many go onto 3rd level universities in Ireland, Northern ireland , UK or elsewhere.

The Leaving cert.is mostly memory/rote basedThat's why the students are stressed out.

    • @mmcs4973
      @mmcs4973 25 днів тому

@Antoniazziluca1 I disagree. I believe the stress is more to do with the competition of trying to secure a place in university. As for the nature of learning, it's no different than in other countries, ie learning by rote or plugging in formulas. The
Problem solving comes later, along with the critical thinking

1 Hagwon schools where there is intense coaching.these are private institutes.
Nursery school children learn for long hours after school
This intense pressure to excel themselves results in high level of competition, bullying, suicide and deeply unhappy people,
One if the reasons for low fertility rates in SK is the insane investment

About the British education system: for decades the OECD, the IMF and various other international bodies have criticized the UK and its economy in report after report for two things: underinvestment and an underskilled labor force. That doesn’t speak well for the UK’s education system. In any case, there isn’t even a UK education system as such, since Scotland has its own system which differs from that in England and Wales.

2018 PISA: The Philippines ranked last in reading comprehension and SECOND- LOWEST in Mathematics and Science.
2022 PISA: The Philippines ranked third-lowest in Science, Sixth-lowest in Mathematics, and Sixth-lowest in Reading.

The cultivation of Critical Thinking is valued in Europe, which is essential in this age beyond basic literacy and numeracy. Unfortunately, SK’s system is somewhat tarnished by the practice of cram schools (not at all healthy) in their competitive obsession with tertiary education. As for US, its dumbing down of science and reading has resulted in disastrous anti-intellectualism, and the rise of cultish maga. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@celticone4677 Canada has a large diaspora of Chinese speakers, is cheaper than other English-speaking countries, has a wider range of higher education support and is probably less competitive than higher ed in their home states.

Because there are ONE POINT FOUR BILLION PEOPLE in China. Or hadn’t you noticed ?Just 0.001% of those students would seem “so many” to you.
PLUS the fact that competition in China for top flight universities is so tough that gaining admission is WAY harder than getting into Ivy League colleges or Oxbridge if you have the money - so that accounts for the vast majority going to the West : the ones who can’t hack it in China.

Arguing for your favourite country doesn't make it so. This is one survey with its particular rationale. There are others out there. Listen and learn!

I would like to argue the point with you on the top 10 well educated countries in the world and give you my own input which is different. To me there is no better head than the one who is well grounded on these things. First on my list is China(are there any better heads than the Chinese out there.) Second in my list is India( or in India?). Third on my list is Russia ( they are more focused than others). Fourth in my list is Oxford(UK) they do well in research and are well grounded on the subject. The others are cities on the map. The world has changed.

There is a distinct boundary between Education and Innovation! The 10 countries listed DO NOT are not found at the top of countries that exhibit innovation and technical leadership! We should focus not on the seed of education given, but rather on the fruit of the sciences and value returned by the knowledge and wisdom that is donated to the host country!!

I found education in America depends on the State you live in. I did some education in California years ago and found it to have a very high quality and availability. The American credit system is excellent. The British system is complicated and still class conscious. America has some of the best higher education institutions in the world. MIT, HARVARD, YALE, PRINCETON, and others.
How we like to think we are superior to America. Could it be an inferiority complex.

What holds Ireland back somewhat is the compulsory teaching of ‘Irish’ which means few have a continental language.

Better than letting their own unique language die. Besides realistically, how many Irish need to learn a European language ( & which ones are you seeing as essential?) when most of them just visit on holidays there...
