  • Pop-up card wallets are ubiquitous, but 10 years ago Secrid invented the design that would spawn a million knockoff’s. The Secrid wallet, the Original Cardprotector wallet is where it all started. While it’s still top of the heap for quality of mechanism, there are concerns with the exterior design that hamper its ability to compete in an ever evolving wallet world!

I appreciate the mechanism evolution to keep it all going, but box integrity and adhesive deficiencies seem to dog the overall design. What’s been your experience?

I've had my secrid (with button fastener) for 5 years now in my front pocket. Never needed to change to a different wallet.

After nearly 3 years of use, this type of secrid wallet is the best ever. My leather was more sturdy than that soft leather and has aged well, the plastic note holder is still as new as when I got it nearly 3 years ago. And the leather glue has not budged a inch connecting it to the metal case. And the mechanism from daily use is as good as the day I got it, and cards do not come out when trying to flick the case even after all the use over the years

Love mine. Got mine in Germany in 2020 and it’s still going strong. I carry way more cards these days. The leather broke in real well and I carry in my back pocket every day. I do remove it from the back pocket when driving and at home. Whenever someone sees the wallet they always say that is one cool wallet.

I have the Secrid Twin. It's basically the same as the wallet in this review, except with two of their card protectors stacked and a snap closure. I have had it for over 3 years now. It's gotten really dirty, but it has remained reliable throughout. The mechanisms in the boxes have not failed, the glue holding the boxes together and the leather to them is still holding strong, and I have not had any problems with it, whatsoever. I currently have 5 cards split between the slots in the leather wrap, 5 cards in each of the box protectors and a bus pass in the cash holder. When I am carrying cash, I can get 15 slips of cash in and still be able to easily close the snap. My main debit card is in the front of one of the boxes, so every time I go to pay for something with it, I get an awesome reaction and a compliment from the cashier. Using your scale, I would rate it as follows:
    Quality: 4
    Price: 2
    Features: 5
    Usability: 4
    Perception: 5
What would be the overall score here when weighting each category?

Hi Glenn, thanks for the detailed experience with the wallet, the glue attaching the leather part of the box was always concerning to me. I'm convinced they have the most progressive extract mechanism on the market as they're always moving to improve it as they see issues. I have their Cardslide wallet we'll be doing a review on soon. Regarding your rating, when plugged into the scoring weight, it comes out as 39/50. Very good score 👍

I dont get it why they don't make a larger box instead of gluing two box together. It waste space and space is expensive in minimalist wallet design.
Stacking up the box with glue also makes the design looks cheap

I bought a knock-off for £2.29 and it's amazing! I saw one in a shop in Wales for £45 - granted, the leather was lovely, but the mechanism was no better than the one for £2.29. The cash holder was identical - very cheap, thin plastic - fine for £2.29, disappointing for $77!

Had mine for ten years so kind of an early adopter. It's done great service. I have posted a considerably less polished review after 10 yrs use and, yeah, have seen some adhesive and banknote sleeve issues but nothing terminal.

Just bought a new Secrid for €50, I think the very same model. Loving it so far! I was thinking about a non-mechanical wallet, like the Bellroy card safe, but it's a bit pricey. Hoping my Secrid will stay intact!

I am currently looking for a pop up wallet similar to the Innway or Esker. I do carry cash and would like the pop up card mechanism paired with a decent amount of room for cash. My biggest gripe with traditional wallets is struggling to get my cards out, so these mechanisms are very appealing. Is there a particular brand/model you would recommend which would have the best cash storage option?

I watched a bunch of your videos and I’m torn between the Secrid wallets and the saddle back leather wallets. I like the design and the card holder on the Secrid but the durability of the saddle back leather, do you have any recommendations for something in between?

    • @walletopia

Hi Skyler, that's a broad spectrum in between there. The Secrid is a box wallet with mechanicals the Saddleback is as traditional as you can get. Which way are you leaning the most?

Unfortunately they don’t within the box, that’s why they all have some form of secondary card/cash holder on the exterior.

Thank you for this video! I've been waiting for your review on the Secrid 👌 I've been using Secrid because of the cards' accessibility.
I also saw your reviews of the Anson Calder wallets and I'm thinking if I should make the switch. All other factors aside, do you think the cards are more accessible in the AC wallets compared to using Secrid, or on your opinion, does it have a huge difference?
    Thank you!

I believe it comes down to preference. If the Secrid is working for you, and you're happy with it, then it might be good to stay with. My only issue is moving parts versus not. A leather wallet with no moving parts will likely outlast one with moving parts.

That's my main concern when people review these wallets. They see the plastic piece for the cash and the glue and inmediately think they are not quality products. The glue has great quality so it lasts forever and the plastic piece for the cash is till today the best solution to carry cash in these kind of wallets. On top of that it does so much in such tiny space thanks to the parts being glued.

Hi i bought the knock off for $17.5, it works really well, the seller said that this is using "top grain" leather, guess it's the corrected one, with of course i-dont-know which tannery. I think the aluminum box itself is not an advance tech so anyone can replicate easily, but can you say the $77 came from the Full grain leather that they used? Is it legitimately good? Never hold Secrid myself until now. Thanks!

@@walletopia You mean that plastic that folds? As well as that box is built, not sure I'd want to carry that in a pocket, especially the back one. I sure it would bend somewhat over time and even in the front pocket, I'm not sure I'd want something without flex.

    • @walletopia
      @walletopia  4 роки тому

I'm going to give it to them because, 1) they started this category of wallet, and more importantly 2) they continue to evolve the ejection design to make it more robust to prevent premature breakage. They're not a one-and-done wallet company. A couple things I don't like about their build, but the company is solid.
