Not going to lie, he influenced my playing in ways I'll never understand.
While it might take some years for me to ever reach their level, occasionally I'll write something and have a brief burst of of inspiration that just screams their style. I wouldn't be half the player I am today without trying to learn from this guy.

This is the loss that hits home worse than anything. For 20 years, there's been no other group whose music I can relate to in the same manner. So many moments I'' remember always. If I had to pick a top moment, I'd pick the latest. Watching the band live in pouring rain. My first ever metal gig not completely drunk. They start playing Hecate's Nightmare. Never cared much for that song. Then the songs picks up the pace. The intensity suddenly rises. Things are moving. Then the chorus come the first time, and pyro flames blow high as hell, the stage is engulfed in flames. The song is heavy as fuck, the album version sounds like Britney Spears next to that live version. The high point of the great show. Sure wish I'd have done something else for the last 20 years other than drinking and missing out so much while going to gigs.

Kind of "funny" to see how people of my generation, which is yours (I'm 30 now), react to this tragic event.
CoB was the first extreme metal band I really listened to, and I loved it mainly because of the incredible guitar work (Alexi of course, but Roope is an amazing player too).
My first step on guitar was Maiden and Metallica, my second step was CoB. I played so many riffs, tried to play so many solos, Alexi was my first guitar idol, my first inspiration.
I barely stopped listening to CoB for several years, even if I came back to it with nostalgia sometimes.
But when I learned the news, I was deeply sad. As if a part of myself, as a musician and a passionate, was gone.
As you, I listened all the amazing songs and solos that made my musician youth, and I was blown away.
First, because the stuff still sounds amazing today, I still think that Alexi is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, melodic metal composer from our generation.
But especially because I realized that many elements of my guitar playing today, are from Alexi's playing, even if I barely don't listen to that kind of stuff anymore. From his solos of course, but also from his riffs (Hate Crew Deathroll/Are You Dead Yet/Blooddrunk era is sooooooooo good for this).
Great video as always Bradley, and thank you for the honest tribute. I feel the same as you, and thanks to tributes like yours, his work and musicianship will be spread to current generations.
And most of all, thank you Alexi, may you rest in peace.
You were a true metalhead, with both good and bad sides of it.
Your work and your influence will live forever in the music you loved.

Just discovered your channel - and finding this tribute was priceless! Firstly, a huge well done for your performance! I think that you got his 'spirit' and 'vibe'! Wonderful job - and thanks for including Next in Line, which is one of my favorite CoB songs...
As a peer with Alexi Laiho (1979), I discovered them when "Something Wild" came out, and due to the fact that we were the same age (as with the majority of the band), I kind of felt that he was a schoolmate of mine! So I was devastated with his death - and still am, to be honest. I love his crazy ideas, his musical genious, his dexterity and musical education, so contrary with his looks! Add to all these his humble character and approachfulness (if this word exists) and then you get the recipe for his success!

I've been a Bodom fan for a couple of years now, I've always loved and idolized Alexi, especially because he was such an exceptional guitar player, honestly waking up to hear the news that he had died was a complete buzzkill especially because I had just restarted my Bodom idolization and was getting back into listening to COB daily again. I'll always remember the day I heard my first COB song, can't remember how I found it but somehow I ended up listening to Sixpounder and that just hooked me in. Alexi was undoubtedly the EVH for 90's kids. My life changed completely when a classmate of mine who was into a new genre of metal every month showed me CoB's Follow The Reaper on his beat up Sony Ericsson music phone during lunch in 8th grade. I was into bands like Green Day and A7X at the time, and I had never heard guitar playing like that before. Almost over night I'd printed out almost their entire discography of tabs and downloaded all the instructional DVD's off of thepiratebay. Most of us as kids dreamed of being able to do what he did and play at that level. His playing pushed me to woodshed certain pieces and solos(The arpeggios in Silent Night, Bodom Night, come to mind and I still can't play the sweeps in Hatebreeder clean.) for hours on end until I got them down. He had that star quality and energy that few others besides maybe James Hetfield or Randy Rhoads had.
I was afforded a unique experience in 2015 when I was invited to perform in Helsinki with him for the "100 Guitars From Hel." I got a call from his agent the night before that they wanted me and two others to be part of the press conference for the event the next day. We hung out and chatted for a while, and he was just down to earth a solid, really nice dude. Even to a punk kid with a guitar like I was. For some reason him and his crew and band took a liking to me and told me that I always had a welcome spot on their guest list for any show. Thanks to them I was able to see a few shows from the side stage, and hang out with the band after shows in the bus and in some bars and hotels and they always treated me like one of them after that. Good times. Alexi was always kind, funny, and overall a really good dude. I remember even sending some videos of me learning some parts for some songs there weren't good tabs for and he told me if I got it down or it was wrong.
Overall, I owe so much of my guitar journey to Alexi, and I probably wouldn't still be playing if it weren't for his music. Like I said previously, many kids dream of being shred gods and rockstars in their teens, and it's thanks to him that I got to experience playing in front of 15,000 people and to experience what I must have been like to do that for a living. But to be able to experience that, with the man who inspired me to want to do that is something incredibly special, and something that I'll value and look back on for the rest of my life. I've got so many great memories and stories thanks to him.
RIP Alexi. You were one of a kind.

    Fantastic tribute video!
I remember buying a Guitar World issue (I think it was Guitar World) in which they published the arpeggios for the chorus of You're Better Off Dead, and I think that issue was accompanied by a video demonstration of Alexi playing it. At that time, my number one influence for lead guitar was Kirk Hammett and I was kinda stuck in a rut. When I heard and saw Alexi playing in that clip, I was instantly hooked and I practiced those arpeggios over and over, I'm sure much to the annoyance of my then partner and neighbors. Learning COB songs improved my playing and opened a new chapter in my musical taste.
Many thanks and much love to Alexi and to you. Cheers!
