The National Institute of Fire Protection and Safety has prepared this vlog to enhance your understanding of the critical risks associated with improper chemical storage, particularly involving Ammonium Nitrate (AN). Highlighted are three devastating incidents: the West Texas explosion (2013), resulting in 15 fatalities and 260 injuries; the Tianjin Port disaster in China (2015), with 173 deaths and 798 injuries; and the Beirut explosion (2020), which claimed 218 lives and injured 7,000. These incidents underscore the urgent need for robust process safety systems, proper hazard reviews, and diligent material management to prevent degradation and instability. By recognizing and mitigating the risks of stored materials, we can significantly enhance safety and prevent future tragedies.
