- Subscriber Choice Video 7-16-2018. In this video, we go over the step by step instructions to build an 8-frame hive top vent box, or better known as a quilt box. These are useful for using to soak up moisture in your hive over the winter or providing ventilation in the summer. Cold doesn't kill bees, moisture does!

I made mine with a skill saw... It was not square or flush.... But that's what they made gorilla tape for.... Ha
I enjoy your videos.
Woodcutting is therapeutic.
A man only needs two tools...Gorilla tape to stick what aint stuck, and WD-40 to unstick what is stuck... :P
Thanks for the video. Very helpful! Does this box go above the inner cover or below it?
Up above it. It is screened on the bottom so bees cant get above it, so it should be above your inner cover and below your telescoping top.
Your videos are superb, I love the idea of this vented box and the sawdust, I also watched the video on the candy board, I am guessing that its okay to use this one with the candy and all of the vented holes in the winter? In kentucky it can get really cold especially late Jan and February, and the candy board will have some holes in the corner for the bees to come through but then they will open to the cold coming through the vented holes?
Cold doesnt kill bees. Bees made it through the last ice age just fine. A cluster of bees will generate 107 degrees in the dead of winter. This is from research done using thermal cameras. What WILL kill bees in winter are the following three things. 1) going into winter with high mite loads. 2) starving to death. 3) freezing due to condensation falling on them from the inner hive cover. All of these are preventable. 1) treat for mites before you shut the hive up for winter. 2) use a candy board AND leave them a full honey super. 3) provide MORE than adequate ventilation (this includes holes in candy boards). Thanks for watching and hope this helps!

Lucy i re-read my reply, and i did not mention that this will work as a candy board, but not if you use #8 hardware cloth as specified as the bees cannot get through it. I made another video on building an actual candy board and it specifies the correct cloth to use for that purpose. Thanks for being a subscriber!
