I had the life-changing experience of arriving at the Long Beach Grand Prix on raceday morning in 1980 (I think), walking past one of the 2 hairpins just as the morning warmup rolled out. At that time both Ferrari and Alfa were campaigning V12s in a sea of Cosworth DFVs and the early Renaut turbo V6. The noise as the cars accelerated off the hairpin was truly glorious, but the V12s really stood out. I later became a big Indy Car fan, and attended the Indy 500 in the glory days of the late 1980s and early '90s. The sound of an IndyCar turbo 2.65L V8 at well over 200 MPH would make your hair stand on end. The sound of 33 of them? Music to my ears.
I had the same experience in Montreal in '02. I remember that the sound of the cars was making it through my ear protection, but it was also slamming me in the chest. A *VERY* high pitched sound. It was amazing!
I was there in Long Beach too. The Ferrari sound was insane. And the Alfa note basically made my skull explode. I can still hear it screaming past on the back straight. Epic.
Imagine Schumacher would have come to Ferrari one year earlier. It was him who said, he would have won the title in the Ferrari 412T2 more easily than in the Benetton B195, so let's assume he would have won it. Maybe the V12 would have lived on for several years ... Where is the pill to be taken to switch into that matrix? ;-)
@@thomassievers3362 In terms of cars maybe, or more in terms of engines. In 2004 I was already missing the variety of engine layouts, especially the V12 of course. And old Hockenheim was already 2 years gone.

Totally agree! One of my most pricesed possessions is a CD that came with Motorsport magazine, about 20 years ago. It includes car sounds from the Goodwood festival and one of the cars is the BRM V16.

Completly agree - the v12 of the 95 ferrari is one of the most beautiful engine sounds of all time , but in my opinion you forgot one engine in your list and that is the honda v12 from 91 and 92 ! (by the way the Mclaren Mp4/6 from 1991 is in my eyes the most beautiful F1 car ever made..
I’m surprised you chose what is, imo, the best sounding F1 engine ever. This video doesn’t even do justice for it. I heard it back in the day and it created a mechanical symphony that I will never forget.
I don't know why they cant bring back that V12 sound, I really really miss it. The V12 is the true sound of F1 not what we have today. If I became the president of the FIA, this would be the first thing I would do and bring back the V12 or V10 trumpet sound. Yes! I know its money and the end of the day.
It won15 out of 16, I was there for the one they didn't A Ferrari 1-2 at Monza a month after Enzo Ferrari died. They would have won that too if it wasn't for a 39 year old driver in what would turn out to be his only grand prix start getting in Senna's way as he lapped him (although you could argue it the other way). Great video and the sounds sill make me shiver.
V10 always sound angry but V12 can play many notes. I like gurgling sound of V12 when going into a corner with throttle lifted And V12 is the KING when at low revs accelerating OUT of a corner. The 2004 V10 does it for me, the best engine ever build
Agree 100 percent. The Renault was the best sounding in my opinion.
Without a doubt!
Williams FW22 BMW the best for me.
Ohh yes 💯 agree but the 1965 was lovely sound
Needs to be fan takeover of F.lA to bring these proper non greenie howling race engines!
the V12 sound of the Ferrari engine makes me travel to the past, good memories of the winter tests at the Estoril circuit, I miss those days

Leaving out the Matra V12 from this list is criminal. The banshee wail of this engine makes the rest of these choices sound like trucks 😂
EEK Where was the V12 Matra? A glorious screaming, howling engine that not only powered F1 but took the MS 660/670 to wins at Le Mans in 1972 and 73K!
The V12 Matra was easily the loudest engine in its time.
Well said, the Matra should have been on the list. The #1 Ferrari from 95' was great sounding but not as good as the ones in 90' and 91' .
The 412T2 sounds amazing, wish there were more of those in todays F1, oh well…
As others have said, the V10 rea is my favorite.
Also, the '66 BRM with its H16 sounds like nothing else on earth.
Yep, and listen to them now.. Awful.
No Formula 1 car sounds as magical as the BRM V16 🤩
That's not a BMW V10...most brutal, insane sounding engines ever in F1.

Agreed, the 412t2 sound godly...
It’s a beautiful engine, and the last v12 in F1. Going to make a video covering its while story soon

1- Ferrari 412 T2 1995 V12
2- McLaren-Mercedes MP4/15 2000 V10
3- Williams-BMW FW26 2004 V10
4- Williams FW14B 1992 V12
5- Brabham BT49C 1982 V8
6- Ferrari 1965 1512 Flat-12
7- Catherham-Renault 2011 V8
8- McLaren MP4/5B 1990 V12
9- Ferrari 1991 643 V12
10- BRM 1952 V16 1.5L

F2004 , Sauber F1.06 and agree with the rest of the list
