When I was at school, every year when we held a Christmas party, my friends and I always agreed on just giving money to each other whenever there's an exchange gift or something. We always thought that it's better to give the person money to buy what they want rather than stressing yourself over what to get them and in the end they don't like it. So for me, it's ok to just give me money, I'd know what to do with it. I'd rather be given money instead of something I don't want.
The only good gift cards are PlayStation store ones, you can see how much money you still have

Usually there's a fee for the card - so you yourself are paying money to put money on a card that is limited use. It's usually like, 5 dollars, so if you put $20 dollars on the card, your actually giving the cashier $25 - 20 to go on the card, 5 to unlock the card I guess.

Here in Argentina, the ask 20 dollars to unlock the gift card and put 5 dollars. Every five dollar, you have to pay 25 dollars.

In Canada, fees are only charged on prepaid credit cards. Store gift cards have no fees. The main purpose here of buying them is that nobody can spend them on anything illegal unless they make the effort to trade them under the table for cash, usually at a loss.
