Punk's funkiest drummer. Mackie was really the Mags' secret sauce and a large part of why I don't find Alpha Omega as good as it could be. A lot of punk drummers probably would have just d-beated through the entirety of Age of Quarrel, but Mackie used the technique pretty sparingly, instead opting for a much more laid back backbeat. Dude's got a good ear.
Exactly he puts that swing and groove which is missing , Chuck Biscuits also had this talent, Danzig albums with Chuck are the best albums because of this.
@@eli_the_crypto_guy Mackie, Chuck Biscuits, and Troy Mowat from 7 Seconds are probably the top 3 drummers in hardcore history. All three have that talent of being able to push the music with their beats and bring a pace and sound that is much more than the typical d-beat-with-occasional-breakdown like the majority of drummers.
went to the high school of music and art with mackie. he was a semi-retired and fairly famous graffiti artist (he wrote Mackie/Hyper) and i hung out sometimes in the lunch room. he was an odd but interesting cat---'retired' after getting caught and stopped writing graffiti-but he's inscribed in the who's who of writers (RTW: rolling thunder writers with guys famous artists like REVOLT and ZEPHYR) and you can see some of his pieces if you look around the web. anyway, i think a lot of people here don't get why he's wearing the MTA hat. he had a special relationship with the subway.. and a true original.

Just saw these guys open for EYEHATEGOD a couple weeks ago. I've been a Fan of this Band since The Age of Quarrel. John Joseph was incredible. I had no voice the next day from singing along. Mackie is a wonder, simply unbelievable. A Phenomenal Drummer. I Love everyone ever associated with this Band, they made records that changed my Life.
death metal drummers are crap...who can play faster and thats it...who cares about 280 bpm?i sure dont...mackie is a master drummer and a groove master
Crazy that I was a metalhead and bought “Cause for Alarm” and the song “The Eliminator” blew me away. So I dug in deeper to the bands like AF. I found Cro-Mags and bought Age of Quarrel. Wow, the drumming Mackie did on that record hooked me for life. 36 years later, I’m still here!
Simply the best drummer in H/C. Dude could write his ticket playing for anybody. I dig how he sets his kit up Ringo style with the high throne. Plus Ringo's windshield wiper hi-hat playing.
Mackie is the best drummer on the world hardcore scene that I have ever seen, he is a great influence alongside Arman Majidi and Danny Schuler !!!! And this video is the glory, to see all its magic.
Mack has that Bonham thing going, indescribable, a vibe, very organic. Plays with the meter, I love it. It's like every stroke is suspended in time and you can feel the rise and fall. Seekers of the Truth perfect example
SuperSkinhead73, funny you mention Reed. When I worked for GOLDENVOICE in the early '80's, when COC would play, I asked Reed if I could sit on the floor beside him while he played their set. It was mind blowing!!!! Reed was an amazing drummer in his own right. Hell of a cool guy too..., very down to earth and seemed really kind. I'm not sure about his more contemporary work since I am unfamiliar. He was a BEAST with early COC though!
mackie is amazing but of coursr he got it from bad brains drummer earl hudson. at one point mackie even became the drummer for bad brains during the late 80's. but there was also bomer from rkl (rich kids on lsd) & dave miranda from ludichrist who were every bit as incredible!

+tinman films someone needs to interview him. I would love to find more about how he started drumming and his early inspirations. Plus stories about Bad Brains, Cro-Mags, and Fun Lovin' Criminals!!!
Who ever stuck their thumbs down doesn't understand the point of the video, or their taste is questionable.. This man is legendary. Even the Bad Brains tunes weren't "covers" for him, depending how you look at it. Other than Bill Stevenson, who else is there?
Mackie is definitely the guy who brought the groove into Hardcore and much more than just the backbone of the Cro-Mags. His style looks totally effortless, almost "elegant & swingin" (if you will) - so much fun to watch. But his stool is oddly high.:-)
They sound good but I think hell play whatever is available. I dont think its his kit. Maybe the snare and pedal but its probably a rental kit. Ive seen videos here where hes playing cymbals from a rehearsal studio with their logos painted on them. Amazing drummer. The drumming on Bad Brains rise is on a whole other level.
Any badass drummer can use any kit and it'll sound like them. When you hear Mackie hit the tom in world peace in this show, it sounds like the record. Its amazing how someone has their sound just by the sound when the hit a tom. I'm not sure if he got on the kit beforehand to tune it but it sounded like him.

Great show of Cro Mags, great to see the energy. Mackie is one of the best drummers I have ever seen live. Thanks for the upload.
