Originally it was called Southern Motors, in the early 1950s, owned by Lawrence Canaperi. My father, Roy Anderson was a salesman there from those early days into the early 1960s, and it was still called Southern Motors. I spent a lot of days there with my father on Saturdays and met Elvis one day in about 1958 when he came in and bought several cars...not from my dad, but I did manage to get Elvis' autograph that day. I also worked for WHBQ-TV news from 1969 thru 1990 and George Klein is a good friend of mine. Bill Anderson

In February 1976 My brother and I, and two friends were traveling to California, coming from New Jersey. I was 17. We went through Memphis and stopped at Graceland. We met Vester at the Gates, He came out of the guard house and talked to us. There were no fans hanging around. We went around the other side of Graceland, where we were told Vernon lived. We met Vernon, and one of his step brothers. Vernon came out to the Gate and talked to us. He told us that Elvis would be up later that evening, and there were two long Semi Trucks in the driveway of Graceland, which you could see the Semi's from where we were standing. Vernon told us that Elvis was recording an new album, but the step brother told us to come back later on when Elvis was up and about. But no one thought of the longterm possibilities of a meeting like that. Unfortunately we didn't go back that day, we opted to continue on to California. A very big blessing was missed.
I think the Album he was recording was Live From Elvis Presley Boulevard. We did catch him in Concert April 13 at the Long beach Arena.

My dad worked at Madison Cadillac in the late 60s and early 70s. I don't think he ever met Elvis, partly because he worked in the body shop as a painter. He had learned this skill at the Ford Motor company assembly plant.. He worked there 29 years until they closed the plant in 1959. Elvis was also known for spontaneously buying cars at Madison for total strangers. One story was that of a middle aged black admiring one of the cars in the showroom. Elvis walked up to her and asked... Do you like that car? He then bought the for her. He did this and other such acts of kindness his entire career.

This wasw not Madison Cadillac....in the 50s and 60s it was SOUTHERN MOTORS at 341 Union.. My father Roy Anderson was a salesman there for 15 or so years and I spent many a day there as a kid. It was owned by Larence Canapari.

Elvis ... still a huge international star, playing Johnson City, Tennessee. Thanks "Colonel" Parker, for these great gigs. Some Elvis fans may not appreciate this comment, but I think Parker was at one point the best thing to happen to Elvis, and at another point the worst thing to happen to Elvis.

He had an awesome smile and sang it so clean and true , I am still trying to find that footage to play it again because it cheers me up , ok all the best to you all and may the good Lord bless you’re hearts Amen love you all peace out Trucker Kelly .

Spa Guy, my mom was at Both Johnson City Concerts! When. You started talking about that suit I told my son "that's the one he wore in Johnson City!" Then you said that's what he had on in JC! How exciting! We live in a town about 15 minutes from there and been to Freedom Hall numerous times! Mom's pics and ticket stubs are in an album at my sister's house. Unfortunately she is no longer with us, but we still have her memories and her memories of Elvis!

Hi, Spa Guy. Great picture and video. I was just checking the book "Elvis and the Memphis Mafia" by Alanna Nash and this day is mentioned in it. It was the Summer of 1974. Elvis ended up at Madison Cadillac because he had been to another dealership that day and they refused to give him a discount even though he offered to buy every car on their lot. Anyway, on this particular day, he bought five cadillacs at Madison and they gave him $1,200 off. This occasion is mentioned on chapter 46. I can't tell you the exact page because I have it on a Kindle and the page numbers are different. It says that he had just gotten home from Vegas. As for the jumpsuit, he would wear them to private outings as well as those golden belts he would get from the International Hotel to commemorate his residency.

This was on pages 597 thru 599. One must see this story as it has a lot more detail that happened on that day and night which involved 3 car dealerships.

    • @marisaf5966

Thanks for the page numbers, John Lee. I lost my hard copy years ago when our house was flooded and was ecstatic to find it on Kindle. I know this book is controversial among Elvis fans but I've always found it very informative.

Like your video Spa Guy. I love these "Then and Now" type pictures. Further to this location, (which I last visited in bout 2007) you will also notice that the gates are still the original ones from the photo. The original picture was taken from a building that was part of the dealership, that was torn down quite a while ago. I did speak to Joe Esposito some years back, about that particular image and visit to the car dealership. He told me that Elvis did have a habit of wearing things like a jump suit to go and about but he couldn't recall and imminent concert prior to or soon after such a visit.

Absolutely love your videos and especially rare photos of Elvis in public as in “on the street” (or parking lot, as the case may be) as in this pic.
There’s also a cool sequence of photos from the mid-1970s that shows Elvis leaving an older downtown hotel, possibly in St. Louis or another Midwestern city, because he was dissatisfied with the poor-quality air conditioning. I’ve heard the Colonel booked that particular somewhat dumpy hotel because he was old friends with its owner. Anyway, in the photos - thank God someone had a camera at the time - Elvis is leaving the hotel and is then seen walking into the street to enter a waiting car. Elvis was known to keep Graceland quite cool so no surprise that he wouldn’t put up with faulty air conditioning at a hotel while on the road.
Another “Elvis on the streets” pic I like is the one of Elvis - no helmet - on his Harley in a kind of run-down section of Memphis with a young lady at the back in the mid-1970s. A young black kid is in the car to Elvis’s left looking at him, probably in shock. Sadly, I read that the young woman later died in a car crash.

I found this bit of research to be very interesting.. I really love Elvis an especially Elvis Cadillac related stuff. I was gonna say those look like the same gates but have be added onto but someone mentioned already. Great video! :) Whenever I think of the 1970s Series 75 Cadillac's I picture Elvis, or the President.. there is a well known bit of video with Elvis riding around in the back of one after a daytime concert :)

I've live here in Memphis all my life. A cool place to check out is Red West Karate studio on N. Cleveland and Overton Park. Cool video and stills on the internet and UA-cam. There is a musical note depicting the door he went into then up the stairs to the studio. Great video of Elvis walking in from the parking lot. Took my wife to see the spot. Close to the old Sears Crosstown building.

Good piece of location research Spa Guy, interesting, thank you. Sort of adds some normality to the otherwise extraordinary life of Elvis Presley and those that lived with him. Also, I was going to point out Billy Smith rather than Jerry Schilling but of course I have been beaten to it here about a hundred times!

Spa Guy This is kind of haunting to look at! I was 7 years old in 1975. It's very interesting to see Elvis and his enterag walking through that gate and what it looks like today. The old, worn painted line and the crumbly concrete stop....It puts chills down my arms thinking about it!
