    Outstanding video showing off the Hultafors GK Heavy Duty knife. The fact that you demonstrated it during winter with snow all around shows just how useful this great knife is. Well done!

    Thank you, Simon! I love my GK, and plan on using it as my winter knife because the handle is large enough for gloved hands. My summer knife will be the Hultafors Expedition knife, which has a somewhat smaller handle, and is very comfortable to use.

    This video convinced me to buy one of these, and I love it. Does everything I want in a bushcraft/utility knife. £5.95 from Heinnie Haynes in the UK (as of Oct 2016). That makes this knife a hell of a value. Thanks for your reviews!

    My friend, that was actually one of the best knife reviews I have ever seen. That was great! Thanks for mentioning me and I am glad I inspired such an excellent video of high quality and content. I only wish my vid was half as good as yours :) This video will make anyone want one of these. I love inexpensive, high quality blades, which is why I love Moras so much. Dont you hate it when your baton breaks? Happens to me a lot and it gets frustrating, especially when dealing with those nasty knots. BTW, are you located in Poland, my friend? I have never been able to tell from your videos. I used to think you were in England but I have heard you talk about Poland lately. Thanks, again for such a good video, brother, that was great! I hope to talk with you again soon! -Dave

      HighCarbonSteel Love Nice to hear/read that :)
      Most of the time I live in England. But I come from Poland and visit as often as possible. You see, they don't have such beautiful, state-owned forests in England. Nor do they have snow :) If the past, communist epoch gave us something positive, it would probably be common land, where you can go to pick mushrooms, berries or camp (in designated places) without having to ask anybody's permission.

      About two days cause you waist a lot of time on the ferry from Dover to Calais. It wouldn't be much faster even if there was no sea in the way, since it's over a thousand miles each way. But I mostly fly these days.

    This is a good bushcraft knife that is a great survival knife because it's so tough. I gave mine a scandi/convex edge grind. The steel is Japanese SK5.

    Dzięki za fajny pokaz! Ja w swoim podniosłem szlif jakieś dwa, góra trzy milimetry pozbywając się tego podwójnego ostrzenia i koleżka tnie jak szatan! Nie rozumiem dlaczego skandynawowie robią tak niskie szlify. Przecież wystarczy trochę wyższy szlif i nożyk tnie o wiele lepiej a z taką stalą można nie obawiać się szczerb czy wręcz pęknięcia. Niedługo zrobię filmik. Pozdrawiam cieplutko!

    Nice technique using the hilt of the handle as a guide along the side of the featherstick. I ordered one from Amazon. It will take the place of my Gerber Prodigy, which is an outstanding knife but the blade is too thick for bush craft. I expect this Hultafors to perform exceptionally well.

    • @SimonsDiscoveries
      @SimonsDiscoveries  7 років тому

      Thanks. This is also quite thick. About 3 mm. The orange version is thinner (2 mm). Check that one out if you decide the big Hultafors is too much.

    Mora Companion HD on Amazon is $18.00 and that knife is $2.00 cheaper. Not having to deal with the secondary bevel is worth the $2.00's to me.

    • @SimonsDiscoveries
      @SimonsDiscoveries  9 років тому

      +bibleprophecy1st Over here, the difference is or was much greater - Mora HD about £14-16 (for some reason that's a lot more than HQ Robust which is only £10 and is essentially the same knife), Hultaforst £8. Plus the Hultafors' handle feels better to me. On top of that, you can't really avoid modifying either of these knives if you want them to serve you well and you'll have to sharpen that spine on pretty much every Mora knife. Unless you decide to spend a lot more on the Bushcraft Black. But personally, I'd prefer to get rid of the secondary bevel or sharpen the spine myself and keep the extra money in my pocket.
      Thanks for watching.

    • @bibleprophecy1st
      @bibleprophecy1st 9 років тому

      Simon's Discoveries
      I agree about the Robust being the same as the Companion HD. The spine is a very easy fix in about a minute with a bench grinder or dremmel tool. Removing a secondary bevel can be alot more work. But when your talking about just a few bucks like the amount it cost for a capacino at Starbucks I don't really care. I waste alot more then that.

      piotrekug Dzięki. Tak, ale tylko ze względu na moje osobiste preferencje. Po prostu lepiej mi leży w dłoni i lepiej mi się nim struga. Można by się doszukiwać i dorzucić, że Hultaj dłużej trzyma ostrość. Moim zdaniem SK-5 Hultaforsa jest pod tym względem trochę lepsza od 1095 Mory (teraz już wiem co to za stal i nawet wrzuciłem krótki filmik na ten temat ua-cam.com/video/LKDX6jljaLA/v-deo.html )

    Simon, I scrolled through the comments but couldn't find anything directly on it, though you mention it again in the comments. My question is how did you remove that secondary bevel? I'm pretty new to modifying my blades, actually I've really only worked on some axes for the most part. I've got some old files, sand paper, & a WorkSharp (basic model), as well as a Dremel. (I've got the tools, I just don't have the knowledge or skill, & I'd like to change the latter.)

    • @SimonsDiscoveries
      @SimonsDiscoveries  8 років тому +1

      +David Huber I've got a video for you :)
      ua-cam.com/video/OHEHm2Xr8AU/v-deo.html
      However, this is not really about removing the bevel as it was already gone at the time. But I used the same stone to regrind the blade and the same home-made strop to finish it. This steel sharpens easily and removing the small secondary bevel isn't a huge job so it can be done on a regular 400/600 grit whetstone. You just need to round it off a little. And another goos thing about Hultafors is you don't really have to worry about messing it up since it's so cheap :) It's a good knife to practice sharpening on. Hope this helps.

    • @mplsatty
      @mplsatty 8 років тому +1

      +Simon's Discoveries That helps quite a bit! I actually had already watched that video you did on sharpening (an excellent tutorial, by the way) in case you mentioned removing the bevel there (seemed like you were about to address it when you said something about a modification you'd made to the Hultafors, but then went no further). Knowing which tools you'd used (whetstone, skill, & patience), I feel less intimidated tackling it myself. And like you said, if I screw it up completely, at least it won't cost much to replace. Thank you for your advice!

    • @SimonsDiscoveries

      David Huber Sure, any time. Have fun sharpening :)

  • @meawoodsman8321

    I'll take a Mora Companion heavy duty over this anytime. Why, the Mora sheath is perfect for what it is. I don't like to buy something that needs mods to be useful or in some cases the sheath is immediately replaced. The Mora is a knife that works well as is.

    • @SimonsDiscoveries
      @SimonsDiscoveries  8 років тому +1

      Moras still need modifications though. You need to sharpen the spine if it's to be a useful bushcraft knife, round the grind if you don't want it to roll and chip too easily and I also modify sheaths sometimes.

    • @meawoodsman8321
      @meawoodsman8321 8 років тому

    co uważasz o hultafors hvk ? Bo myślę że gk jest dla mnie trochę za gruby bo w lesie głównie bawię się w feather sticks i try stic więc myślę że cieńszy będzie lepszy . Więc co myślisz o hvk? Jak ze struganiem trzymaniem ostrości itd ? pozdrawiam

    • @SimonsDiscoveries
      @SimonsDiscoveries  7 років тому

      Jeśli chodzi o ostrość, to stal jest ta sama więc nie ma problemów. Jest trochę węższy i w ostrzu i rękojeści więc jeśli masz mniejsze dłonie, to będzie w sam raz. Te noże są zwykle bardzo ostre od nowości więc nic nie trzeba z nimi robić. Kiedyś kupiliśmy ich ze dwie paczki dla wolontariuszy do nauki bushcraftu w Londynie i sprawdzały się doskonale. Jeśli się zastanawiasz nad wytrzymałością, to dawno temu nakręciłem taki śmieszny filmik ;)

    • @SimonsDiscoveries
      @SimonsDiscoveries  7 років тому

      Zależy której mory :) Do tych 2 mm jest bardzo podobny. Kąt się trochę różni i ostrze chce głębiej wchodzić przez co trzeba je bardziej kontrolować w hultajach. No i dobrze je troszkę zaokrąglić dla zdrowotności ;)

    Got mine two hours ago and really wish I bought the Mora Robust instead. This knife was $15.00 and that is what you get a $15.00 knife. The Mora's are much better finished and feel like a higher quality knife. This knife was dull, it was unevenly ground and the handle had casting spurs all over it. Buy a Mora.

    • @SimonsDiscoveries
      @SimonsDiscoveries  8 років тому

      +Myk Ford Well, you will have to regrind it a bit but I prefer the large handle on my Hultafors.

    • @Mykford1
      @Mykford1 8 років тому +1

      +Simon's Discoveries ...yes, you're right Simon. I put a convex grind on it and brought it up to my Mora Comp HD's edge. The handle is nice as you say but my main gripe is the price, I looked on Amazon and the cheapest I could find it for was $15.00 USD. So it's the same price as the comp HD and the Robust which IMO are better quality. Thanks for your feedback and keep up the good work my man, your videos are great.

      +PerferObdura It works with many other knives too. I've got one of those :) Thanks.

    I bought one of these because of the good reviews. Mine is a piece of crap. The handle is horribly finished, the grind is so uneven and choppy that it's hard to figure out where the edge is supposed to be. It actually looks like a 10 year old did it on a bench grinder. The back of my butter knives are sharper than this thing. If anyone reads this 'don't buy it', save your money or buy a mora.

    @Svil Buscus For some reason there is no reply button under your message, so I'm gonna have try something different.
