lp.constantcon... Former Fleetwood Mac Guitarist & Singer Danny Kirwan Dead at 68
He played on albums like, 'Then Play On' (1969), 'Kiln House' (1970), 'Future Games' (1971), 'Bare Trees' (1972)
Mick Fleetwood released the following statement on his Facebook page, "Today was greeted by the sad news of the passing of Danny Kirwan in London, England. Danny was a huge force in our early years. His love for the Blues led him to being asked to join Fleetwood Mac in 1968, where he made his musical home for many years, Danny's true legacy, in my mind, will forever live on in the music he wrote and played so beautifully as a part of the foundation of Fleetwood Mac, that has now endured for over fifty years. Thank you, Danny Kirwan. You will forever be missed!"
He played on their only British #1 song - the instrumental 'Albatross' as well as the hits 'Man of the World' and a real signature song for the early blues Fleetwood Mac sound 'Oh Well.' He was also on 'Rattlesnake Shake.'
He was born on May 13, 1950 in Brixton, South London. Kirwin was in his teens when he was spotted by Fleetwood Mac.
The late Bob Welch of Fleetwood Mac who committed suicide in 2012 and who had the solo hits 'Sentimental Lady' and 'Ebony Eye' had a sometimes strained relationship with Kirwan once said, "He was a talented, gifted musician, almost equal to Pete Green in his beautiful guitar playing and faultless string bends." In another interview he said, "Danny wasn't a very lighthearted person, to say the least. He probably shouldn't have been drinking as much as he did, even at his young age... He was always very intense about his work, as I was, but he didn't seem to ever be able to distance himself from it... and laugh about it. Danny was the definition of 'deadly serious'."
He had problems with alcoholism and mental illness. At one point he was homeless. It was his drinking that got him kicked out of Fleetwood Mac.
Rolling Stone magazine printed a quote from The Independent from a rare interview with Kirwan from 1993. It was after Mick fleetwood went looking for his old bandmate going as far as asking the missing Person Bureau to look for him. At that time Kirwin said, "I get by and I suppose I am homeless, but then I've never really had a home since our early days on tour. I couldn't handle it all mentally and I had to get out. I can't settle."
When Fleetwood Mac was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 his name was up there as well but he did not attend.
Kirwan died yesterday June 8, 2018. No cause of death was announced. - by John Beaudin

I have been playing for a long time, and Danny and Greenie were a force to be heard, Danny was just amazingly gifted player and as far as I'm concerned one of the Best Blues Player to come out of England. I'm so sorry that he was so lost after Peter left the band, it seemed like after the tragedy in Germany they were never the same.

So sad ... What a beautiful, shy and immense talanted guitarist Danny was. I saw Fleetwood Mac in my hometown Umeå in the north of Sweden March 28 1969. They actually played in my school assembly hall! I never will forget when the whole band made their way through us - the waiting audience, outside the hall - queezing themselves through the entrance doors!
Suddenly my girlfriend Monica stretched out one arm and touched Danny Kirwan's hair, ruffled it slightly and yelled: "Oooh - You are sooo Cuuute!". Danny looked at her, both shy and almost a little scared, but the smiled quickly and went into the assembly hall.
My friend Curt had spent the whole day with the band since he was photographer at the local newspaper Västerbottens Kuriren, showing them our town and even having lunch together. (My God! I'm so jealous!) We three sat on the first row, Curt snapping lots of fantastic pics of the band.
I was almost mesmerized by Dannys playing, his intensive concentration on his Les Paul, his blond hair moving around with his head shaking, his fantastic sound and vibrato and his perfect connection to Peter Greens sort of "supporting" warm guitar riffs. It actually felt as if Green promoted Danny to take the front seat, something he managed with flying colours. A memory for life.
I wonder if Danny ever remembered that Beautiful Nordic Swedish girl with long Blond hair, Green eyes and freckels who touched his hair ... If so, I'm a little proud because it was My girl ...

All of us were down front 196?, at the Silverbell, me, Zubal, Tom Weschler, all the local guitar stranglers. The dressing room was in the basement of the old ski lodge, we all exchanged guitars, I played Peters', he played my Strat, laughing and chatting before they went on. Peter probably played Geris' SG LES Paul, but sitting down front we got knocked out by the real Fleetwood Mac, Kirwin was fabulous, the whole band was knockdown dragout.
We were taking bets when Mick would hit a cymbal, he saved crashes for special moments, what a band!!

My brother bought the "Black Magic Woman" containing album by Fleetwood Mac early on and the talk was always about Peter Green, Peter Green. Well, I preferred listening to the Future Games and Bare Trees period of the band. I remember listening on my first pair of headphones "Koss headphones" in high school and loved the guitar tones of Danny Kirwan for that signature sound, a bit moody and melancholy, but more original. I believe Danny was very underrated for his contribution.

I just stumbled upon this video a few minutes ago, purely by chance, and it broke my heart. I only "discovered" Danny about six months ago, and since then I've been obsessed with trying to learn to play some of his and PG's songs ("Something Inside Me," "Albatross", and--most symbolically touching regarding both men--"Dragonfly," etc.) on guitar. Clearly Danny's life as difficult from the beginning--I hope he has some peace and comfort now, and I hope he had some sense of how much his songs and his playing were loved.

i carried on buying fleetwood mac albums after peter green left largly because of danny kirwan's music. the group could easily have slipped into the blues-based heavy rock that was extremely popular then. fortunately that couldn't happen with those band members and at that time kirwan was a leading creative force with his melodic guitar playing and often poetry based songs.the two albums he recorded with [the also very important] bob welch show a successful development of that style.

One listen to Live at the Boston Tea Party from 1970 proves more evidence of this. However if anyone deserves credit for getting Danny into the Mac it was more Mick Fleetwood than anyone else. Peter simply saw the possibilities quickly, and the rest became history.

I was SO fortunate to have been able to see the 'Future Games' line-up twice on tour (and each time from only 30 ft away!). One time for 'FG' and the second for 'Bare Trees'. That first time, I was especially blown away by the band, the wonderful songs, the overall energy... but most especially by Danny's playing. (IIRC, it *might* have been their very first gig in the USA supporting that album, playing at a large club in Rockaway Beach on Long Island.)
Anyway, the very next day, I went out and bought 'Future Games', and right away, I was stunned to not only recognize all the songs (IIRC, they'd done the entire FG album plus more), but *even Danny's solos*; those were that much a part of each song, and he had obviously performed them as such (but, to be sure, there were improvised moments, as well). For me, that experience was such an indication of his innate melodicism on guitar, and it made a huge impression on me. To this day, he has remained one of the main influences in my own guitar playing and a huge hero of mine. What a touch, what a tone...
    R.I.P. Danny. Play on...

Danny was far more a perfectionist than improvisor. That he could jam as well as he did is further credit to his playing chops, and tutelage under Peter Green.

This guy was a world class guitarist. I was so happy to have rediscovered Future Games just over a week ago. I hope he finds peace up there ♥️

Nikola Kovačević In my opinion Future Games was as good as Then Play On. Kiln House and Bare Trees were also excellent. Danny's guitar playing was very melodic, toneful and esoteric. He wrote and played beautiful music. Im not taking anything away from FM after 1972, but I didn't follow them after Kirwan left.

@@keithpeters3321 Lots of folks, especially Brits and Euros, stopped following them after Peter left (when the blues were no longer front and center), likewise after Danny was axed - but this may have had more to do with Bob and Christy having to fill more prominent roles in the band, and perhaps BW's vocal style.

One of my favorite Fleetwood Mac songs is the instrumental Jigsaw Puzzle Blues written and performed by Danny Kirwan, better than Albatross IMHO.
    RIP Danny Kirwan

This is another great guitarist gone, why is it only in death do these great great talented musicians get remembered , crying shame, second only to Peter Green , so very very sad 😪😪😪😪😪😪😪😪😪😪🍧🍧😪RIP mate .

Speak for yourself please. I still listen to the real Fleetwood Mac weekly and lately have enjoyed playing along to "Albatross". Hell, Kirwin was only 4 years older than myself and as long as I can hear them they live on. For those who thought FM radio meant Fleetwood Mac radio then that is what they liked. There is music appreciation and there are those who are tone deaf. So knock it off and and rock on...

I am struggling to get over this news, Greeny and Danny had an almost telepathic musical understanding that for me even surpassed the also superb Allman and Betts. Dannys of course a legendary guitarist to his fans (of which I'm most definitely one), was also very good at songwriting aswell.

Along with the songs that were mentioned in this video, some of my favorites that Danny Kirwan had a hand in were Child of Mine and Bare Trees off of Bare Trees lp. Station Man and Jewel Eyed Judy from Kiln House. RIP Danny Kirwan.

I’m so glad to see true Fleetwood Mac fans.... there was much more to this band before Stevie and Lindsey- I remember listening to Danny as well as Discovering Roger Fisher from Heart , I was in 7th grade and that’s when everyone was enthralled with Soulja Boi and all that other nonsensical crap. There is one song that I can’t find to save the life of me, and I don’t remember the name- either... I only remember the playing he did and how amazing it was- every day I would come from school and hop on UA-cam just to listen to it because, smart phones weren’t a thing back then and we weren’t allowed to have any listening devices in school.... I hope to hear one day, but at least it’s in my head.

I am very sad to hear this. The times around 1970 was very rough on guitarists. The use of alcohol and drugs ruined many talents. Jimi Hendrix died. Peter Green and Danny Kirwan became shadows of what they were a few years earlier. And also Eric Clapton, for that matter. Jeremy Spencer vanished into a strange cult. Paul Kossof became an addict and died in march 1976. And Syd Barret...the list of gifted musicians who died or lost their talent at that time could be made longer. It is so sad. Maybe they thought they were superheroes and could take anything?
