Great stuff, thank you. If you're a big fan of Kirwan as I am, listen to Tramp from 1969. Kirwan solos throughout the album will amaze, especially "Hard Work." You also get to hear Jo Ann Kelly and her brother Dave sing some great blues tunes. What a year it was for 19 year old Danny. Lastly, I'd like to share some insights to Kirwan's departure. Welch not only didn't get along with Danny, he was imploring Mick to fire him shortly after he was hired in the late spring of 71.

My first purchase at 15 was Then Play On and I have loved the LP for over 50 years. I love Danny's contributions to Fleetwood Mac but my love went to Peter Green The Green God. Most of Peter's songs can now be found in extended versions on The Vaudeville Years double set. I find Peter's songs to be far better than the Kirwan songs, the best sing by Danny was Coming Your Way. Where Danny excels is on Peter's songs where his guitar work made it possible for Peter to write these songs. Peter said having Danny made it possible to push the boundaries of the blues to blues/rock. Danny understood that he could never compete with Peter but could learn much from him. Danny could be credited for pushing Fleetwood Mac into the pop sound that sold millions in 1976 with his malaria sound. Peter credited Danny for his contributions to the band and hard work but once Peter left Danny could not lead the group when it came to live shows, which ked to his excessive drinking. On the Bare Trees LP Danny had written and played some excellent tunes along with nice contributions to the Kiln House LP. Danny was a welcomed addition to Fleetwood Mac but needed Peter to guide him, after all his was a teenager when he joined Fleetwood Mac. Danny was underrated and underappreciated.

Great subject matter here, very well done, hat's off to you. Yea, Kirwan used to be terrified of going on stage and would cry as he went on. I have a bootleg of them from 1970 at the Warehouse in New Orleans, LA where they were playing with the Grateful Dead and they spiked the water, they story says they were unable to play their instruments, the boot I have is two disks cd and it sounds awesome, so not sure why it was told that they couldn't play their instruments, this is the time that Peter Green split after the US tour, so if you see that boot, grab it as it's so good. Supposedly this is where Peter Green went on the trip and left the band soon after, it says that he had his own energy and didn't need drugs, the acid really messed with him bad. Thanks for putting this together, really enjoyed it.

Hey Dead Wax66, thanks for checking it out. Always loved Then Play On so much and part of that is definitely because of Kirwan.

Kirwan was a big influence on my guitar playing from 1968-72, my high school years. Those albums were my gateway to the original guys from Chicago and the Delta. Jeremy Spencer was important too, they were so good. I went to school in Scotland so I heard all the cool stuff the cool guys were listening to in the UK. Yeah, Then Play On is definitely one of the best Fleetwood Mac’s records. Thanks.

The All Boys club had its benefits. Fleetwood Mac in 1969 outsold both the Beatles and Stones combined in the UK.

My favourite era of Fleetwood Mac is the Peter Green and Danny Kirwan era, even Mick Fleetwood admits thats his favourite era of the Mac, Blues was where they were best

Good video. I’m very familiar with Fleetwood Mac and the British Blues scene. Most idiots who were raised in the BS late 70s FM have no idea how good they were then.

My mate had the LP in 1970 I often borrowed it and played it to death but we felt embarrassed by the lyrics in the Kirwan songs.

Comparing "Rumors" to the original Mac is like choosing Wings over the Beatles.

So too, George Harrison who was Mick Fleetwood's brother in-law and friend; their wives respectively, Patty and Cindy Boyd. George is famously remembered for saying in the studio, "Let's be Fleetwood Mac doing "Albatross" just to get this going" in referencing the Beatles rehearsing what would become the song "Sun King," from the Abbey Road LP. And Mick Fleetwood was quoted as saying that it remains his favorite FM album above all others.

I was a FM fan since just about the very beginning. I followed the band up until Bob Welch left - at which point they became a soft rock band with the addition of Buckingham and Nicks. That being said - Then Play On has always been my favorite FM album - and it got even better with the later releases and additional songs.
