  • I know what you're all thinking, is this guys crazy? but hey I'm will to give something a go. In the end I've got a set of chains that I know fits, had fun making them and learnt how to actually fit snow chains.
    Now do your research if you are thinking of doing something similar because Australia has so many rules and regulations in regards to design, when you have to have cans and when you can't, and everywhere is different!

    Bloody brilliant Adam, they’ll be smoother once you’re in the snow, and you can use them in mud as well, they’ll give amazing traction

      Thanks David, that's what I thought, but it was amazing how rough it drove. The thinking is we might not go back the way we come down on our next trip so hiring chains might not work for us too

    Yeah a mate of mine back in the 80s bought some Canadian Ice breakers for his 1985 Toyota 4runner. We used them heaps in the mud, they were great. Good idea Adam keep em handy.

      Thanks mate, yeah I can picture using them on the Creb track up in far north Queensland where it's some of the steepest tracks in the world, mixed with red clay and in rainforest. Thanks for the support 👍

      Thanks mate, one of more biggest concerns about hiring chains is we are probably not going to go home the same way we entered the area, so having return the chains might be difficult or a long way out of route. We'll see soon enough if it was a good idea 🤷‍♂️

    Fantastic job!!! The whole time I was a little worried about the rubber straps. I lived in Canada for 10 years and at sub zero temps they don't work all that well. Great idea with the turnbuckles !!

    • @GoingOverland
      @GoingOverland  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I agree, I seen a couple of videos of 4wders having rubber straps with chains so that's where the idea started, but to me it was a big weak point. Thanks for the tip

    Good job Adam. The turnbuckles seem a better and safer option. We used to frequent the Victoria and Snowy Mountain snow fields when lived in Victoria and I never used chains in the snow although which we had them when you hit a patch of black ice. I used to use them on the muddy tracks in the Victorian High Country.
    Good luck with them.

      @GoingOverland  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Kevin, I agree with you on the turn buckles, I think the rubber straps was a big weak point. I think where we might be going we probably won't need them on the road, but one of of the camps we have planned is a hour off road and if the weather turns that's when these things will save us. Also I'm thinking we will not be going home the same way so hiring chains might not work for us, but I'm not letting the cat out of the bag yet 😉

    Credit to you for having a crack. My only concern would be the integrity of the chain strength. If it was to break under the stress of the vehicle weight, there is potential for extensive vehicle damage.
    IMO you only really need 2.
    FYI it's not so rough when you're in the snow and it's amazing how much the traction improves.
    Good luck with it. Looks like you really thought it through.
    Thanks for sharing 👍

      Thanks Michael, I think the 5mm chain should be OK, but time will tell 🤷‍♂️ I suppose that's part of making something yourself, testing it out will be interesting and hopefully I got it right. 👍

    Great stuff mate! Some awesome engineering there. 😀 Yes, keep your speed down when using them and you might like to consider something else to lay between them in the box as the cardboard would get very soggy if you put wet chains in there. Hopefully you won't need them but if you do, that just means that there is plenty of snow around. Looking forward to seeing your snow adventures. 🙂

    nice one Mate , i made a set for my old valiant ute years ago and worked great load of wood and could not get out of the bush put them on and drove through the mud and crap as though was on a main road 😁👌
    hint , lay the chains out on top of the wheel so it droops down and then join them together that way you dont need the blocks and its way easier 😁👍
    ps make your own cam locks 😉 easy as 😁🍺

    I think youll get plenty of use out of them even on red clay slopes after the snow..
    There is a guy up Cape Tribulation who uses chains to get up his driveway in the wet season up here.

    Just watching this after watching the next video( I know watch them in sequence). Great job on making your own chains they’ll come in handy for all sorts of terrain. Just an observation with the front chains, I would link all the cross chains so that you are running chain all the way round the tyre. I noticed that in a few places you have just cross chains. In another life I worked in the alpine areas of Victoria driving troop carriers as taxis and coaches and it’s my experience that when you put you foot on the brakes you always end up on rubber and not chain hence the reason diamond chains were introduced. Chain will grab the ground whereas rubber just slides. Not a criticism of your great job just sharing a bit of experience. Really enjoy your videos.

    • @GoingOverland
      @GoingOverland  2 роки тому

      Yeah Dave you are spot on, and especially not having abs it would be even worse. Where we are going it's not compulsory for 4wds to have chains, but one of our camps is over a hour from the bitumen, so my idea of making the chains is more for getting in and out of this camp, and just for a emergency using them on the roads if the weather turns bad. I really enjoyed making them and learnt a lot too. Thanks for the support 👍 and feedback definitely helps

    As you found out the difficult part is tensioning the chain. and keeping any links from damaging the vehicle ( we carry extra tie wire, to hold stray links etc and waterproof gloves) I had to laugh, 'it will be more difficult in the cold' not wrong. we tried fitted chains on an icy hill ( near guthega) we got out of the vehicle and it started to slide down the hill 😆, so be careful. the road was so icy we could not stand up unless we hung on to the door handles. (to a vehicle that was sliding down the hill) we find 4 rubber wheels slide on ice. we should have put the chains on sooner.

    • @GoingOverland
      @GoingOverland  2 роки тому

      Thanks guys for the info and advice, that's scary to think about a car sliding while stopped! Tie wire is a great idea and we always carry some in the back, might throw some in the chains box too👍

    Probably a redundant question but did you check the tyre to chassis/suspension on full lock?

    • @GoingOverland
      @GoingOverland  2 роки тому

      Yes good point Bob, on full flex the chains on rear will rub on the body, so definitely not disconnecting the sway bars (the patrol has massive flex in the rear) and the front end has lots of clearance with steering and suspension travel
