Listening to metal is like going on a journey - fully agree with that observation. Until my first Mgla concert I was not a big fan of Black Metal either, but this concert changed my point of view. Since then I prefer my coffee black :-)
I'm with you guys 100%. I'm not a huge fan of normal black metal. I've listened to a lot of it and have really only come back to derivatives of black metal like symphonic black or atmospheric black. I can appreciate other more pure black metal, but not for me generally.
That said, Abbath is amazing. This whole album this song is on is incredible. I had it on repeat for months after it came out. Great reaction guys!

Immortal wrote all the songs for the successor to "All Shall Fall", but when ex- member Abbath left the band in 2014, he changed the lyrics, song titles and recorded these songs for his so called "solo album". Demonaz from Immortal said "When we were like 80 percent finished with the songs and the pre-production, we had this conflict that ended with Abbath leaving. And he took with him the material - most of it - so we just had to start from scratch."

I was just listening to this disk on the way into work this morning. I think it's really a grower. The longer I listen to it, the better I like it. I think that the standout track on the record is "Ashes of the Damned" for me, as well as the cover of "Nebular Ravens Winter". Overall, Abbath, King, and the dudes came with a mighty dose of face wreckage on this album. Very much within the cannon of Immortal and "I".

As someone who grew up on early Black Metal eg. Venom, Celtic Frost/Hellhammer, early Sodom, Mercyful Fate etc. The band that got me into second wave Black Metal was Satyricon, from there I branched out to Immortal, then Emperor, then Thorns, then Enslaved, and lastly Marduk. You should check out Satyricon's The Pentagram Burns, K.I.N.G.(The Black Metal equivalent of Enter Sandman), and Black Crow on a Tombstone. A lot of Black Metal purist don't like how Satryicon evolved away from the True Kvlt style of Black metal.....but fuck 'em because I like it.
I've enjoyed the Abbath album a lot more than the new Immortal album, still a good release but Abbath done it better. For a great Immortal song check "Withstand the Fall of Time" from the album "At the Heart of Winter" (my favorite of them).
If you are starting to appeciate Black Metal you need to check Emperor, I highly recommend the song "With Strenght I Burn" (live at Wacken).

Guys! I love it that you are getting into Abbath and the like. Since you are now more into black metal etc., maybe you could revisit Moonsorrow? Here's a song that has some of the most beautiful melodies you'll find in any metal songs and also some great pagan / black metal parts. You should listen to Immortal - Withstand the Fall of Time, that song (and the album it's from) is much more melodic than this song. In my opinion it's among the best BM albums out there, and that song is a good example of what the rest of the album is like.
