Finally starting to close the gap between when these vlogs were recorded and when they are released! Next up there's a completely mental vlog about bonfire night, another weekly vlog detailing me handing in my thesis (AAAAAA), and then another weekly vlog about my time in New York with UA-cam (WHAT?). And then we're basically up to date! So yeah, lots of exciting stuff to come, and that's just the vlogs...

can completely agree with the whole thing about drinking in freshers' week (called 'o week' in australia). drinking is such a heavy part of the aussie culture, and literally every welcome event run by the society included a bar tab. our law society ran a first years' weekend camp, which basically was a weekend bender for most of the students - i struggled so much tbh. i learnt very quickly what my limit was, and that it is okay to say no.
hyper-masculinity definitely doesn't help, but just remember that there are so many more opportunities that you can experience without the need of alcohol. my petty self actually enjoys hearing the weird gossip from drunk people while sober.
I agree with that! I'm an international student here in Australia and I'm not a drinker. Feel like I'm missing out on making a lot of friends cause people use alcohol as a social lubricant. A lot of events also revolve around alcohol and I don't want to stick out by turning down a drink...
Literally, my PhD is on this drinking culture = bad group behaviours = lad culture = hyper masculinity = Uni societies
(In Britain, that is)
GOt a few friends who don't drink, who still come out all the time with us. It just depends on your confidence and behaviour without alcohol
Avi P my tip would be get into drinking just soft drink or something, so then u can still hang out with a 'drink' in ur hand, making u and potentially other ppl less awkward
Avi P its alright man everyone secretly admires the guy who doesn't get shit faced. I'm not saying that's what I do I am the drunkest bloke still standing at every party
I can confirm you're a celebrity at Exeter, in our Physics applicant day they asked current students if they knew who you were.
Hahaha really? "If you see this man, RUN"
Yeah, general consensus of the room was that around half of them had heard of you, though the current students hadn't and were apparently quite surprised that they were so 'out of the loop'!
Even my grandmother has heard of Simon, after showing her a few of his videos
@@BarriosGroupie 🤣 that's mean!
I've been following your journey to your Ph.D for forever now and it's awesome to see it wrapping up! It inspired me to create my own channel centered on studying physics in the U.S.! All the best.
And now you're famous!
I don't know why but I feel such a sense of pride watching this. I recently went and watched some of your earliest videos. Seeing just how much you've grown and changed since I began watching just makes me happy. Also, knowing that you've now finished your PhD is amazing news. I am hoping to follow in your footsteps by majoring in physics and getting my PhD. I just want to say thank you for being an excellent role model and I am so unbelievably happy for you. Thank you, Simon.
Simon, you don't know how much of a joy you gave me uploading this new video!! Love from Romania
I’ve been looking forward to this all week! I’m currently a high school senior, but eventually I plan to get a Ph.d in economics at the University of Pennsylvania. Your vlogs are one of the few things that keep me motivated. Hope you continue making videos and thank you Simon.
Hey Simon,
I started watching your videos at the start of the year just as I was beginning to write my Master's Thesis. I just thought I would say thanks for these vlogs as they provided me the necessary distraction and motivation that pulled me through my final year. I now have a Master's degree in Advertising (my thesis was on feminisms relationship with current online video advertisements) and even though I know literally nothing about the science and math parts of your videos they are still entertaining to watch.
Thanks and good luck on whatever comes next for you
Great to have you back! Your videos really entertain me and I love when you talk about serious topics and physics and things like that. Thanks ❤️
Love your videos so much, you encouraged me to apply to oxford for medicine and I even got an interview, although I never got in I don’t think I would’ve had the courage as a very introverted person to even apply let alone make it to interview stage, been with you since under 1k and hopefully will continue watching well into the future, keep doing what your doing, keep inspiring, keep entertaining 💫
You are an absolute inspiration! Thank you for sharing your life, you truly make a difference.
really missed your videos, glad your back
a 38-minute vlog? just what i needed :) thanks Simon and congrats on handing in your thesis!
There were definitely moments in this where you reminded me of John Green in his signing madness phase, complete with the crazed stare and stressful hair-rustling!
Also, congratz on spotting the error in that Jacobian - man, that was more subtle them I thought. When you were first explaining it I was like, "silly Simon, forgetting the Jacobian at his own peril!" Turns out you hadn't forgotten it, and I would have made an identical mistake.
Congrats on your PhD!!! I've been following your Twitter extensively, and I know how much work you put into it. Good job!
Great to have Simon back
I also watch your videos for inspiration. I honestly love the way you communicate with us on this side. Good luck for the rest of your thesis!
Thank you for your openness. I like you for showing/explaining us your mistake (as a Phd student (I know you are done by now: congratulations!)) and do not keep quiet about it. That makes you totally likeabel. Have you never been afraid of what, for example, professors or colleages who have seen your videos think of you? You are really a role-model. Thanks again. Wish you all the best!
I love how bingeable these are!
Stay strong Simon, you're almost there! I'm a Physics freshman and I'm so tired (finals coming yay), so I can only imagine how you must be.
So glad you're back, Simon! :)
Yay! Happy to see you vlog again! :) Seeing the Freshers week portion of the vlog reminds me of my Freshers’ week (during my undergraduate days) although I don’t think Freshers’ week in the Philippines isn’t as big in the UK! It was fun though.
I never touched drink or booze until I went to law school, and it was at a sorority party! They’re not as wild those seen in films, though. There, I was able to learn the trick of not getting drunk-by eating something relatively filling and drinking alcoholic bevs alternately plus drinking water from time to time. And it’s worked for me, and have never been drunk.
This is totally unrelated-congratulations on handing in your thesis! Knew you could do it. 🙂
YOU'RE NEARLY AT A 100K subs!!! CONGRATULATIONS!
Hey Simon, I'm a new subscriber to your channel, your videos are really interesting and indeed gives a sense of the life of a PhD student. Thanks for creating these videos man, as a fellow PhD student myself, I can totally relate to your daily routines.
Thank you for subscribing! And best of luck with your PhD :)
OMG!! Simon is finally back!! and finally a 30+ minutes video good ol' times
You are back you are baaaaaack!!!!
18th of September whoa such a long time ago
Nearly at 100k.. wow! Congrats - you deserve it. Hope you had a nice christmas, and hope you have a happy new years! :)
Always get so excited when I see your videos! This is a brilliant vlog! You need to come back to Oxford again soon!
He’s back!!
Your explanation of integrals and derivatives would have been helpful a few years ago when I was studying theoretical physics haha. Changed programs now but definitely found that explanation to be super simple yet effective.
22:17 love the pro camera trickery / pro procrastination
The transition at 18:21 is really cool
Looks like we have a fellow Tim over here! This year I applied to Oxford, got called for interview and I am now anxiously waiting for the 10th of January to get a response. Love your videos, keep making them!
Best of luck to you!
Thank you!
I know, right? Good luck!
Hi Tim!
The real work starts once you’re in here :) good luck and prep well for the start of your course, regardless of where you get in
Genuinely my favourite youtuber, I also have a book recommendation for you! Sebald's Austerlitz!
Three great channels that have amazing videos imo, SovietWomble, Cowchop & Trick2g's multiple editors. Cowchop being a personal fav.
I think SovietWomble might well be my favourite editor on the whole website, apart from maybe UpIsNotJump
Ahhh! Finally!
you're finally back to vlogging
I just got an upload notification and it is literally 1:01 am...see y'all around 2 lol (ps. I really liked your planets of Star Wars video Simon, new SW fan yoooo)
Hi Simon! Long time no write. I missed your vids. Hope you're resting now and enjoying the end of the year. Chear mate! :)
Legend has it that this vlog started its upload on that Sunday...
that pink twitch is a fault in your graphics card, best to backup your harddrive before you have to put the thing in the shop for a week
I love this man! 😍😆
*actual audible cheers*
It's always weird to see vlogs from Oxford as I've grown up there
Love the Nail and Gear shirt :D
¡Oh! yeah this is so good, i love you
FINALLY
Have a great New Year, everyone! :)
Simon. I have a question... What do you plan to do with your PhD? Apologies, if I've missed you explaining the above in a previous video. I haven't quite watched them all yet!
Am i the first one commenting? Helloooo hola from México! I love your videos.
I'm from Mexico too... No sé porque lo digo en inglés.
Carla P. Malo me ha pasado Carla jajajaja
That casual wicked reference 😍😍
Finally the vlog's back...and its 38 minutes long...!!! Woo hoo..!!
Good Luck !!!! 😆
You’re not alone Simon lol 🤣 I remember myself repeatedly explaining to myself what the geodetic datum is 🌏 and the maths 📐 involving the geodetic coordinates 😫 before my viva 💁🏻♂️
The careless mistakes I made were ...... (let’s not talk about it) 😏
Simon, by this point in December, have you finished your thesis yet? I tried looking on twitter but October was so long ago!
33:32 The framing of this shot is fucking banging, GJ
Big up SovietWomble! Also, Cyanide currently lives in Exeter.
Yeah I think I bumped into him once! But wasn't sure so didn't say hi haha
I fell asleep to a bootleg simpsons episode and woke up on this? I’ve never even seen this channel before
what do you use for editing your videos?
You mentioned that you are in your 9th year because of a disagreement between supervisors. What was that disagreement and what was the result? is there a video about it?
*Fourth year, and he mentioned why in passing - basically his second supervisor thought they had been taking the project in the wrong direction and instead showed a new direction. That's as much detail he went into and honestly I think the full detail he can talk about till the thesis gets published.
Maybe a long shot, but does someone know which song they (the choir) are singing at around 35:40? It is great
Love the early 2010s DnB drop lmao
9:39 OMG THAT HELMET, IT HURTS TO LAUGH...
That face at 5:27 is priceless
Hello Simon!!!....I just felt like greeting you via the internet.
Hey, at least you didn't just completely forget the jacobian!
You really need to make a 100.000 viewers special.
Simon any advice to be good at Linux ? Tips???
how long has this guy been doing his phd? You only get 3 years funding by the way
My mate, we'll call him Mike, makes many good videos each week but his youtube channel just isnt growing, and the money he gets is right down with some demonitized, so he's depressed and thinking of quitting, do you have any advice I can give Mike to help him become profitable again?
Its me!!
hA I met Dan at a taster day! Massive respect :)
What are those earphones at 31:00? They look cool.
How did I end up watching a calc. type of video from a vlog? I'm not resistant to it. Just confused :) lol
0:07 MY BIRTHDAY YAAAAYYY
Stayed at Trinity College a couple weeks ago, as I had my physics interviews. Hard to tell how they went, but just hoping for the best!
Jonny Cook All the best friend! :)
Good luck! I hope you get the result you want :)
Happy 2018!
Same to you Inessa!
God, I love croquet
Simon whats the name of the song the chapel choir are singing at the end? Absolutely beautiful.
+George H the Nunc Dimittis from the Truro service by Philip Stopford!
Thanks!
Great Vlog as always Simon. It's nice to be able to relate to other, equally exhausted physics student struggling the same way I do. But really??? Using the Cross product sign "x" to express a simple multiplication at 24:49 and 28:54? Especially instead of a wedge symbol between d theta and d sigma in the latter case? You really need some more sleep! Take care ;)
Do we have to start calling you Dr. Simon now?
Not yet ;) I still need to defend my thesis in a viva - which is happening in February
Simon Clark wait how long have you been at Oxford? I thought a typical Phd program takes about 4 years!
I left Oxford four years ago! I've been doing my PhD at Exeter since then
I thought it was just the Cathays stray cats but it's the Exeter stray cats, too.
That saving private ryan clip hahahaha
Well it seems this cancelled this year. Not sure if that is good or bad.
I think you should just change your channel to Badger Watch 🤔😂
simon is a G
sorry, Dr. Simon is a G
Simon - can you recommend any of the general postgrad workshops/courses available at Exeter? I've just started my PhD in Bristol but I'm funded by GW4 so I can hop over to Exeter and take advantage of what they have to offer too!
I did some of the professional development courses such as on having a good relationship with your supervisor, and how to stay on top of new papers in your field - is that the kind of stuff that you meant or am I missing which courses you mean?
Simon Clark that's exactly what I meant! Staying on top of new papers sounds like a good one. There's loads at Bristol but it's a good excuse to travel around the GW4 unis haha
I mean definitely come down if you fancy a change of scenery! I didn't use a huge number of things from the courses in my PhD in the end, but I definitely learned some useful things and they were well put together. Plus the uni is gorgeous so well worth a visit ;P
Simon Clark Cool, I will take advantage this year then :)
Hello, fellow Tim!
Simon is a Tim!
What did you get in your sub? :o
Veggie pattie with olives, peppers, and BBQ sauce on 9 grain
What headphones are hung around your neck at 31:33 ?
These! bit.ly/runningbluetoothheadphones
Good quality?
And we're back in September ☹️
Man you are the best hahaha
What is a "state school" isnt the university of Oxford in Oxford England
wait so all the weird stuff in Harry Potter wasn't made up?
Nice hat films reference there...
"Hello bus."
You're using Phython to run your code? 😲
Simon I am probably a minority but would like to see a full choir performance.
There are lots on our UA-cam channel! ua-cam.com/channels/N_DR16pmzR5RAlrpOh64jQ.html
the beard kills me
Where did you get the money to afford all of this
